My husband is absolutely convinced that your average person in the Uk will not have heard of the band Crowded House. This is entirely based on the fact he can only name one song by them. Despite me listening to them on a weekly basis during 16 years I’ve been with him…
I’m equally convinced he’s wrong but I do have to admit I grew up in New Zealand and didn’t move back to the Uk until 1998 so probably fairly biased. I’m willing to concede they probably weren’t that popular here and I don’t think they had many big hits but I refuse to believe they were as unknown as he claims.
So who’s right?

Definitely heard of them!

jays · 07/12/2022 19:46

Weather With You, I hate that song, I’m not a fan but dh likes them so I try my best,

amershamfc · 07/12/2022 19:46

Yep

pursuedbyablackdog · 07/12/2022 19:46

Love crowded house, but am the wrong side of 40!

CrapBucket · 07/12/2022 19:46

Surely Crowded House are known everywhere you go?!

WarmSausageTea · 07/12/2022 19:46

Loads of hits, though my favourite track of theirs is Chocolate Cake, which I think was only an album track. (Woodface?)

I think the Finns were in Split Enz before CH, I Got You is a cracking tune.

Ethelfromnumber73 · 07/12/2022 19:46

The soundtrack to my uni years (mid 90s)

LlynTegid · 07/12/2022 19:47

Their biggest UK success was at a time when Top of the Pops was still on, so likely to be known to anyone who was around in the 1990s. Both their 1990s albums and one of their singles were in the top 10.

Saw them I think in 2007 in Hyde Park. No guesses what happened when the heavens opened.

maddy68 · 07/12/2022 19:47

Yes used to love them

CurlyhairedAssassin · 07/12/2022 19:48

I'm 49 and love their music. Saw them live in the mid 90s, they are brilliant musicians and songwriters.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/12/2022 19:48

I'm 52, I have several of their albums

Pallisers · 07/12/2022 19:49

I'm Irish living in the US for years.

Am very slightly obsessed with Crowded House.

Years ago I read an informal sets of interviews with songwriters - majority of whom named Don't Dream It's Over as their favourite song.

Dartmoorcheffy · 07/12/2022 19:49

Im 52 and they are a band who I like, and DP is 40 and he has heard of them and knows some songs too.

FKATondelayo · 07/12/2022 19:50

I'm 48 and they are definitely a band most of my generation will know. I think they straddle the divide between cosy cardigan easy listening and festival guitar pop quite well. It's less embarrassing to admit you like them than e.g. Travis.

My son and I have just listened to the original radio series of Flight of the Concords and Neil Finn - "the Ronan Keating of the north island" - features in every episode.

Cornelious · 07/12/2022 19:51

I saw them when I was a young child. Loved them!

Pieceofpurplesky · 07/12/2022 19:52

@Specksofwhiteallaround your DH should go and see them. Went to see them in summer with DS(18) who loves them and there were loads of under 40s there. There was a group of lads in their late teens next to us who knew all the songs.

They are excellent musicians and that's what people enjoy. With the younger generation of Finns being involved now I guess a different audience gets to know them.

Tall Trees. Best song

CantFindTheBeat · 07/12/2022 19:52

I'm 54.

Loved them.

Don't dream it's over is still one of the best songs ever.

countrypunk · 07/12/2022 19:53

I'm 38, a Brit, and I've loved Crowded House since my sister started playing them when I was about 11. I still listen to all their old stuff. Great band.

romany4 · 07/12/2022 19:53

Love Crowded House.
I still listen to them now

OlleOskiFelle · 07/12/2022 19:53

Absolutely, saw them earlier this year.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 07/12/2022 19:54

I adore Crowded House, I pretty much wore out my tape of Woodface at university in the early 90s. Saw them live in London earlier this year. I consider Neil Finn to be a songwriting genius.

MilkyYay · 07/12/2022 19:54

I'm 37 and i love crowded house!!!

AreOttersJustWetCats · 07/12/2022 19:55

Lots of UK people have heard of Crowded House and would be able to name lots of songs. They played the pyramid stage at Glasto this year - those slots don't go to unknowns!

MilkyYay · 07/12/2022 19:55

Ive just dug out my cd and am sadly trying to work out how to play it with no cd player

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 07/12/2022 19:55

Love them, love Neil, still going strong, his two sons are in the band now and they are still touring.
