My husband is absolutely convinced that your average person in the Uk will not have heard of the band Crowded House. This is entirely based on the fact he can only name one song by them. Despite me listening to them on a weekly basis during 16 years I’ve been with him…
I’m equally convinced he’s wrong but I do have to admit I grew up in New Zealand and didn’t move back to the Uk until 1998 so probably fairly biased. I’m willing to concede they probably weren’t that popular here and I don’t think they had many big hits but I refuse to believe they were as unknown as he claims.
So who’s right?

Well most people my age will have heard of them. I am racing towards 50 and the difference with my generation is that we were more of a captive audience in many ways. We just did not have the same level of exposure outside mainstream TV and radio that young people have today. Unless you were particularly into alternative music and acts (so an devoted NME/Kerrang etc reader.or heavily into going to see unknown and upcoming acts at small venues and various university unions), there was just a lot of shared exposure when it came to music, TV and films. Crowded House were certainly heavily played on the on radio at the time. It is the same with TV. Only a few terrestrial channels and very limited programmes targeted at children and young people (at specific times). That is why we all grew up watching whatever our parents watched. Most people my age remember Allo, Allo, Juliet Bravo and lots of crappy sitcoms (Terry and June sticks in my memory)!

Love them, they were a constant feature on MTV at the time Woodface came out, did that 24 hour thing with Ray Cokes.
I saw them several times, at a few festivals too.
And saw them this summer - and they are better than ever live.

beatsin8s · 07/12/2022 19:58

I'm 30s and have! Thanks for the reminder, listening to them now 😀

Georgeskitchen · 07/12/2022 19:59

Yes they were popular in the 90s, had a couple of decent hits.
Why would your DP think nobody's heard of them?

VoluptuaGoodshag · 07/12/2022 20:00

I’m 53 and I love them. Not listened to them in a while so you’ve prompted me to go and download some of their choons. Pineapple Head was one of my favourite driving songs back in the day. Saw them live at Sydney Opera House which was supposed to be their last ever concert. It was brilliant

anythinginapinch · 07/12/2022 20:00

Love them. Such moving tone to their music

OhmygodDont · 07/12/2022 20:00

Just 31 here and I’ve no bloody clue or what your on about lol

BestIsWest · 07/12/2022 20:00

Yes and I still have a Split Enz single somewhere.

watcherintherye · 07/12/2022 20:00

I’ve heard of Crowded House. I may recognise some of their songs, if I heard them, but I couldn’t name any of them.

Chickenvoicesinmyhead · 07/12/2022 20:02

Plenty of non-average uk people on here by the look of it😋

Mid 50's . CH on my playlist. Often have a merry end-of-evening rendition of Pineapple head with a mate. Great stuff!

alasangne · 07/12/2022 20:02

Hey now hey now don't dreeeeaam it's over

Namaste6 · 07/12/2022 20:02

Regularly throughout th years - oh, and I'm Scottish!!

Coxspurplepippin · 07/12/2022 20:03

Crowded House and Split Enz - amazing. But I spent my twenties in Australia so not surprising really.

Jenpeg · 07/12/2022 20:04

I'm 40 and absolutely love them.

PollyCreo · 07/12/2022 20:04

Soundtrack of my student (90s) years.

Philandbill · 07/12/2022 20:04

Brilliant band. Saw them earlier this year. My favourite song is "I love you Dawn".

Honper · 07/12/2022 20:04

They don't attract devotion or mania but they've been on the radio a lot for the past 30 years so lots of people who listen to the radio have heard their songs.

Specksofwhiteallaround · 07/12/2022 20:04

To the person, sorry I can’t remember your username, who asked what DH was listening to in the nineties, he’s very into dance music/trance etc now so probably music along those lines although he apparently was also an Oasis and Travis fan so not too sure how Crowded House passed him by.
I grew up listening to music my mum liked so anything from Buffy Sainte-Marie, Roy Orbison, Gene Pitney, Tina Turner and Hot Chocolate to Enigma and B-Tribe. I suspect he’s lumped them in with other all the other music I enjoy that he’s personally never heard of 🤔😅
Glad to know in this instance he’s wrong.

You will definitely have heard some of their songs. Search Weather With You on youtube, I refuse to believe not everyone has heard this one!

WeAreTheHeroes · 07/12/2022 20:06

I love Crowded House. Neil Finn is somewhat underrated as a song writer by the likes of your DH OP. A good few years ago I saw the Finn Brothers and it was great.

beatsin8s · 07/12/2022 20:07

@OhmygodDont and Don't Dream it's Over

JamieNotJames · 07/12/2022 20:09

I'm 43 and grew up listening to them.
I love them and play them regularly.

Does your DH know they played at Glastonbury this year?

WeAreTheHeroes I always think of their songwriting in a similar vein to Squeeze.

anon666 · 07/12/2022 20:11

Yep, I have

dancinfeet · 07/12/2022 20:11
