My husband is absolutely convinced that your average person in the Uk will not have heard of the band Crowded House. This is entirely based on the fact he can only name one song by them. Despite me listening to them on a weekly basis during 16 years I’ve been with him…
I’m equally convinced he’s wrong but I do have to admit I grew up in New Zealand and didn’t move back to the Uk until 1998 so probably fairly biased. I’m willing to concede they probably weren’t that popular here and I don’t think they had many big hits but I refuse to believe they were as unknown as he claims.
So who’s right?

I have and I've seen them live!

GertrudeBell · 07/12/2022 19:16

Love them and ‘Fall At Your Feet’ in particular

1Sky · 07/12/2022 19:16

I am 49 though 😂

Essexhousehusbands · 07/12/2022 19:16

god DH listens to them all the time !

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 07/12/2022 19:16

Somewhere I've got Pineapple Head on a cassette single, for those who remember cassette singles.

BloodAndFire · 07/12/2022 19:16

They're totally shit but I have heard of them so I voted yanbu

BureauCats · 07/12/2022 19:17

Woodface is one of my fave albums. Mum used to play it in the car. I'm 32!

Igneococcus · 07/12/2022 19:17

Oh, Im not British, so I might not count as "your average person in the Uk".

KerkyraBlue · 07/12/2022 19:18

They were pretty well known in the UK at some point. Neil Finn did a solo album that I was obsessed with, it had a song on called a Sinner which is a work of art. It was the soundtrack to me interrailing about Europe when I was in my early twenties!

MrsFinkelstein · 07/12/2022 19:18

Seen them in concert 3 times. Love them.

veiledsentiments · 07/12/2022 19:18

Tim Finn and Crowded House. Am 51. Had Woodface on CD at uni. Most people my age would have heard of them.

SwedishEdith · 07/12/2022 19:18

Watching University Challenge now and I reckon many people would recognise the songs but not be able to name the band. And also have heard of the band but not be sure of any songs. I saw them loads of times in the early 90s.

multivac · 07/12/2022 19:18

Not only Crowded House; but the Finn brothers together and separately, AND Split Enz. Adore em.

IndieK1d · 07/12/2022 19:18

In my 30s and have heard of them! And fud like them as a teenager

SchrodingersKettle · 07/12/2022 19:20

I'm 46. Loved Crowded House! Just an absurdity they never had a No.1 hit in the UK.

BarbaraWoodlouse · 07/12/2022 19:20

Late 40s and grew up in the UK. I had their hit album (and some solo material) so could name them and several songs.

Haven’t played them in years though so my kids would have no idea. Might play some now though…

Namechangedforspooky · 07/12/2022 19:21

I think you need to be pushing 50 to have heard of them. Popular in the early 90s but I’d struggle to name more than 2 songs now
(distant sun and fall at your feet)

SilverCatStripes · 07/12/2022 19:21

Absolutely love Crowded House!

Fall at Your Feet is so beautiful & poignant- always evokes a bittersweet feeling in me.

CleopatrasBeautifulNose · 07/12/2022 19:21

I went to a theatre show for kids last week where the 'popular culture reference for the parents' was Crowded House and that was the soundtrack that played the audience or at the end. So I think that settles that and your dh is wrong.

DearStranger · 07/12/2022 19:22

I'm in my 40s and have heard of them. My sister was a fan in the 90s.

custardbear · 07/12/2022 19:22

Yep, I'm 50 and know much of their stuff

FloresApparuerunt · 07/12/2022 19:23

NatalieIsFreezing · 07/12/2022 19:06

Their "Best Of" had a tv ad that said "you know more Crowded House songs than you think!" then proceeding to play Weather With You etc (the etc indicates I can't think of any more off the top of my head, except Distant Sun, which is brill).

DH has always found this very funny.

Weather With You is a classic!

BeetyAxe · 07/12/2022 19:23

38 and know their stuff, seen them live.

PerkingFaintly · 07/12/2022 19:23

Love them.

CatchYouOnTheFlippetyFlop · 07/12/2022 19:23

Of course people will have heard of them. My 14yo daughter might not know them by name, but she would definitely know their songs.

Always reminds me of our first ever holiday together to Greece with my now DH. The was a Greek duet singing Weather with You with their Greek accents 'do I lie like a lounge room leezard' 😁

Not a groups album I would have bought, but definitely big when I was younger. I'm 45 now.
