They sent me a tea towel in the post today. I didn’t ask them too. I neither need or want it. It’s cotton, made in China and is hand wash only. I went on twitter to enquire as to the ethical sourcing of it and whether I could return it to store and they wanted photos? How many tea towel mail shots are they sending that they need a photo? I try to shop ethically and only buy what I need, this got me so cross today!

@ElBandito maybe you are?

mine enjoy their 'pride of place' over Christmas, then they go to the loft to recuperate for 10 months!

it's exhausting being so Christmassy I suppose!

We have Christmas tea towels / hand towels. They don't have pride of place though! We also have Christmas loo roll.

Clearly I’m in a minority. I try so hard to minimise my impact and waste. Even if I recycle it that’s still an unnecessary waste of resources, I wonder how many they sent out and the environmental impact of it all.

Ooh, that’s some brass neck you’ve got there, you little jet setter 😂

Bluekerfuffle · 03/12/2022 19:35

How odd. Sounds like sainsbury’s randomly selected one person to send a tea towel and it happens to be the only person who gets incensed by surprise tea towels.

VisitingThem · 03/12/2022 19:42

I got a really nice scented candle from them one year, no tea towel for me this year though :(

I’m a loyal sainsburys shopper. Where’s my fucking tea towel!!

Hehe

ReachedTheEndofCake · 03/12/2022 20:32

@MsFannySqueers @TwoMonthsOff we have some of my grandmas old tea towels, she also had a habit of bringing them home as souvenirs. My favourite have recipes of stews/soups on with the obligatory carrots and onion print. And yes we’ve made the recipe a few times 😋

ElBandito · 03/12/2022 20:37

@NoWordForFluffy I fold mine up, fashion a complicated origami angel and put it on top of the Christmas tree. Doesn't everyone Xmas Shock.

unsureatthispoint · 03/12/2022 20:48

What? They sent you a freebie and you want to complain 'cause ethics'? Ridiculous OP

Makinglists · 03/12/2022 20:54

Where's me tea towel??? My grandfather worked for them for best part of 50 years, my mother shopped there (loyalty) and I shop there (nearest big supermarket). I think I deserve a tea towel too!!

I’ve heard it all now. Is nothing in your house made in China ??

wonderstuff · 03/12/2022 21:08

😂 at the idea of me being a jet setter! I did fly to Florida, we took the train to Bordeaux for a family wedding, I had no part of planning it! We are going on holiday again next year, we will fly to Tenerife, we decided against AI. 2 flights in two years is more than we normally take, I do like sunshine. I don’t like pointless waste. I wasn’t aware of how many people got excited by tea towels. I will donate to my local charity shop.

Obviously we have products made in China, but I tend to buy ethically sourced cotton, and I don’t buy things I don’t need.

amp.theguardian.com/world/2022/jun/21/us-ban-on-cotton-from-forced-uyghur-labour-comes-into-force

this is why I’m specifically concerned about cotton from China. I appreciate that an ethical stance is a privilege, but Sainsburys do have that privilege. Anyway, it’s probably not that deep, I should just let it go.

@ReachedTheEndofCake
how charming, even better if they are ‘made in Ireland’ I remember seeing that in my mums tea towels, they would probably last for years

www.ulsterweavers.com/collections/cotton-tea-towels

ulster weavers have some lovely ones, probably no longer made in Ireland though

@Feef83 clearly needs to get a life and stop mindlessly researching the history of posters in a bid to shoot them down.

You have a very sad life.

It's trolling. And it's weird.

I reported last night as it's happening on every thread. MNHQ removed what I reported and said they'll look into the account properly when they get chance.

Shimmyshoo · 04/12/2022 08:22

She completely derailed one of my threads yesterday @girlmom21 to the point that I thought it was the person that the thread was about. She seemed to take great pleasure in that. I've since had it deleted by MN. I'm glad they are looking into it. Absurd behaviour.

I’d be angry too!

watcherintherye · 04/12/2022 08:33

I do see your point op, but I’m afraid I’d be stupidly excited to get a free tea towel in the post!

LadyWithLapdog · 04/12/2022 08:59

I’m with you, OP. The producing, sourcing, flying over, stuffing into envelopes, distributing etc. What a waste. I also agree with PP, it’s not an all or nothing regarding waste. We do what we can. And this is in the category of something unnecessary and easily avoidable.

''I'm sure they'll miss your custom! 🤣''

I certainly won't miss their products, stores and general nonsense.

What? Never done AI, last went to Turkey in the 90s, drove to Holland, took train to France. Firstly your ‘gotcha’ is actually 2 flights in 2 years, secondly this is about Sainsburys being irresponsible, I completely missed the memo stating that once you set foot on an airplane you become unable to consider environmental cost of anything!

Could you refrain from just making stuff up and making this a personal attack?
