To be really annoyed with Sainsburys?

They sent me a tea towel in the post today. I didn’t ask them too. I neither need or want it. It’s cotton, made in China and is hand wash only. I went on twitter to enquire as to the ethical sourcing of it and whether I could return it to store and they wanted photos? How many tea towel mail shots are they sending that they need a photo? I try to shop ethically and only buy what I need, this got me so cross today!

It’s very normal not to want unsolicited tat whether it’s “freebies” from supermarkets or “fun gifts” from your employer. YANBU.

Catmatdat · 03/12/2022 18:24

Give it away on Olio

Wishawisha · 03/12/2022 18:26

Are charity shops really crying out for supermarket branded tea towels? Who would buy that?

Who would even pick it up on any free stuff page either?

I don’t think putting it the charity bag makes it all ok.

That said, I’d just use a tea towel if I was sent one in the post.

HRTQueen · 03/12/2022 18:26

I’m more annoyed at their price hikes and special offers a week or two after a price hike on items

and that they have taken away nearly all the smaller trolleys 🛒 one I’m short so getting items out of the bigger trolley is difficult secondly I’m on a budget like many so no we won’t be tricked into buying more

TwoMonthsOff · 03/12/2022 18:28

The plastic biros and cards form Salvation Army - yes I agree nobody needs another plastic biro but a fabric tea towel (hand wash comment is simply a distracting tactic as nobody would do this, it’s not a cashmere sweater) is handy in anybody's life. They last for years and biodegrade

@Feef83 well that certainly makes for interesting reading.

how someone can complain about a tea towel after that thread I'll never know.

Not even the sense to name change 🙄🙄

I’m currently annoyed at Boots for adding unwanted gallons of antibacterial hand wash, something I have no use for, to my order of stuff I do. At least a tea towel you can give to charity, what can I do with these vast plastic bottles of slime?

I would actually imagine there would be more call for lots of pots of unopened hand sanitiser on a give away site like Freecycle etc than there would be call in a charity shop for a tea towel …

Pumperthepumper · 03/12/2022 18:32

I really do hate this idea that it’s all or nothing for climate change. We need to reduce unnecessary waste, and a teatowel from an absolutely massive conglomerate definitely comes under ‘unnecessary’.

SkylightSkylight · 03/12/2022 18:38

KnickerlessParsons · 03/12/2022 18:05

We had one - or at least DH did 😡 where's mine? It's my nectar card

I'd take the hand washing with a pinch of salt. Ours is going in the machine with everything else. An extra tea towel for free is always welcome.

@KnickerlessParsons

well, you'll have space in your wash!!

any chance of a photo of your tea towel?
I'm trying to decide how sad to feel I've missed out.

they're trying to win me back as a customer, a tea towel would help a lot more than endless bloody messages.

they've got no hope either way. team Tesco all the way!!

carefulcalculator · 03/12/2022 18:15

Oh, the professional contrarian is back I see! Very boring, they seem to think not recycling is worth reporting to everyone.

@carefulcalculator I wish this quoting system
mafe it clear who you were referring to!
it looks like you mean me, but you must mean yellowtreehouse surely??

TerrysNeapolitan · 03/12/2022 18:47

Where is mine Sainsburys?

girlmom21 · 03/12/2022 18:56

To be fair @SkylightSkylight I don't know why
I even bothered questioning her stance!

I was going to say I don't spend thousands, and then with a sad realisation it dawned on me that I do.

If only we didn't have to buy food. Xmas Grin

I was actually horrified when I worked out how much it was. In fairness, some of it may be booze Xmas Grin

ElBandito · 03/12/2022 18:59

I have a free tea towel from Sainsbury's. Honestly; I don't need one; I don't want one; it doesn't match my kitchen, towels etc; and they could have just emailed the vouchers.
I'm not really annoyed but I have rolled my eyes slightly. I'll probably use it for something but it won't be taking pride of place at Christmas.

Lovageandrose · 03/12/2022 19:08

This is why I shop in Waitrose.

Do tea towels generally have pride of place at Christmas? I must be Christmassing wrong! Xmas Grin

velvetiserenthusiast · 03/12/2022 18:01

How do people like OP get through life? I can't imagine having time to be annoyed about something like this. Life must be so stressful with this outlook..

@velvetiserenthusiast they cope by going from one international holiday to another. Heated swimming pools because DH likes a heated pool in the day & she wants to swim in the evening - heated of course. Day trips to places most of us would consider environmentally unfriendly.

but yes, let's pretend we care & start a thread about a tea towel.

hubby probably works for Sainsburys!!

teachermummyme · 03/12/2022 19:21

@wonderstuff I'm surprised you're getting so much stick. I'd feel the same; I hate unnecessary waste and promotional items that people neither ask for nor will be used are the worst. What a waste of resources.

VisitingThem · 03/12/2022 19:22

Threadkillacilla · 03/12/2022 15:59

Is there such a thing as enough tea towels?

This was my first thought too :P We are obviously quite rough with our tea towels as I generally need new ones every year!

@ElBandito maybe you are?

mine enjoy their 'pride of place' over Christmas, then they go to the loft to recuperate for 10 months!

it's exhausting being so Christmassy I suppose!
