The Lady Hussey racism thing

I am really conflicted about this.

If went to live in Japan (I did live there for 3 years several years ago) I would be expected to be asked about where I'm from because I don't look Japanese (and in fact I was asked many times! I didn't mind at all, it was my choice to be in Japan and I knew I didn't look japanese). If I chose to stay in that country and have children, I'd expect my children would be asked the same, and their children and that although they would be Japanese by birth, I would hope they would be happy to talk about their heritage and where they are from and not mind being asked why they don't look Japanese and what the history is. I wouldnt think it racist and wouldn't want such questions to be stopped because we only learn from others, and about others, by talking and feeling safe to ask questions.

So why in the UK does everyone have to be sooo careful with what they say? This woman has a non English name, was wearing some non western clothing, as was asked about her heritage. Why is this abuse?

We need to stop being so sensitive and allow dialogue.

So all those people of colour who tell us the opposite are just lying?

As a parent of a mixed race child I can confirm that there is a weird sense of entitlement to the hair of people of colour. I’ve had to tell people not to touch his hair quite a few times.

Also the issue with hair is not just about touching. There is a wider issue where black hair is policed - see the school a couple of months ago that was trying to force black students to ‘tame’ their hair, for example.

I've heard this so often and from so many different sources. It's obviously a thing and really intrusive. I can't understand how people have such a sense of entitlement that they would touch someone else's hair uninvited. It would drive me bonkers if it happened to me. I'm sorry that some people don't believe you. I can't defend it or understand it really.

You didn’t actually listen to the link, did you?

I posted a link. Yours is a figment of your turgid imagination.

Oh, ok. Now you don’t believe that a very common experience recounted countless times by black and mixed raced women, as an actual thing that routinely and regularly happens to them and which they find intrusive and distressing, actually happens. You think it’s something all those people lie about.

I see exactly the kind of person you are and there really is no point in anyone trying to argue with you and your racism any further.

FayCarew · 02/12/2022 12:28

@thehorsehasnowbolted , maybe your hair doesn't have whatever it is that makes people want to touch it.

she said 5 or 10.

So that 'transcript' took 5 to 10 minutes? They must have been speaking really slowly

So on one hand it would have been impossible apparently for her to remember the conversation clearly, but at the other hand she's at fault for mot accurately timing it

Okay then...

Your desperate flounderings are hilarious. If you listen to the link (which you won’t), Ngozi explains the exchange went on for longer than the transcript.

thehorsehasnowbolted · 02/12/2022 12:33

The issue isn't that they don't believe them, it's that they don't want to believe them because that might put them and their attitudes in the wrong

The thing is, if you are going to set out hunting someone down, expose her in this way and make her lose her role, you'd better be sure you are 100% clean yourself. Otherwise most discerning people will find it very hard to believe what you are saying, especially when there is no proof.

This gives just one example of the accuser apparently not telling the truth on national TV.

Are we supposed to believe what others say at face value? Why? Do you?

RedAndBlueStripedGolfingUmbrella · 02/12/2022 12:43

Jeez, just had a look at Twitter, there's some absolutely foul people out there!
Least it's given me a few more racists arseholes to block, need a screen cleanse lol

DuvetHugger · 02/12/2022 12:44

She was representing a cause which focusses on a certain ethnicity. Domestic abuse - but only for a specific ethnicity. Of course she was going to be asked about her ethnicicty.

Clavinova · 02/12/2022 12:47

I've just listened to the link - Ngozi says she told Lady Hussey, "we deal with African and Caribbean heritage people" very early in the exchange - that seems to be quite a relevant piece of information to leave out of the 'transcript'.

thehorsehasnowbolted · 02/12/2022 12:49

If this were the case, for all we know, Lady H may have praised this woman or the charity during the remainder 9 minutes. Perhaps she said wonderful things.

But we will never know, will we? Because she decided to relay to the world the 30 seconds of alleged 'abuse' instead

TheTartfulLodger · 02/12/2022 12:50

Ngozi Who??

The Lady Hussey racism thing

This is why we have a confirmed, written transcript, things are clearer in writing.

In any case, it’s accurate, the charity does help African and Caribbean heritage women.

For Hussey to interrogate Ms Fulani another 5 or 6 times after this asking where she’s really from is racist.

thehorsehasnowbolted · 02/12/2022 12:53

Not a transcript. Not confirmed

Clavinova · 02/12/2022 12:54

it’s accurate, the charity does help African and Caribbean heritage women

But also suggests that the questions were not based on appearance.

Why of course? By that reasoning it would also be ok for her to be asked if she'd personally suffered domestic abuse.

It would have been natural to ask a question about the work of the charity and why it was important to her.

Squeezita · 02/12/2022 12:55

What proof do you have that Hussey praised Ms Fulani for 9 minutes?

And even if she did, it doesn’t excuse the racism in the first few mumutes.

LookingAtYou · 02/12/2022 12:56

'In any case, it’s accurate, the charity does help African and Caribbean heritage women'

Only African and Caribbean women? Would they turn a victim away if she was of the wrong heritage?

Squeezita · 02/12/2022 12:59

Clavinova · 02/12/2022 12:54

So after your 50 posts saying Ngozi was asked about her appearance due to her dress, you now agree she wasn’t?

Regardless, haranguing someone SEVEN times about where they’re really from is racist.

thehorsehasnowbolted · 02/12/2022 12:59

Ngozi Who??

Interesting read. Specially the financial details

DuvetHugger · 02/12/2022 13:01

@sheepdogdelight yes, I probably would have asked her if she had

Clavinova · 02/12/2022 13:01

So after your 50 posts saying Ngozi was asked about her appearance due to her dress, you now agree she wasn’t?

Now I've heard a different version of the 'transcript' - yes!

Squeezita · 02/12/2022 13:04

Long live Ngozi’s transcript!

thehorsehasnowbolted · 02/12/2022 13:04

So after your 50 posts saying Ngozi was asked about her appearance due to her dress, you now agree she wasn’t?

How can you second guess the intentions of the person asking a question? The psychic abilities of some posters are dumbfounding

Squeezita · 02/12/2022 13:05

The transcript is real!
