The Lady Hussey racism thing

I am really conflicted about this.

If went to live in Japan (I did live there for 3 years several years ago) I would be expected to be asked about where I'm from because I don't look Japanese (and in fact I was asked many times! I didn't mind at all, it was my choice to be in Japan and I knew I didn't look japanese). If I chose to stay in that country and have children, I'd expect my children would be asked the same, and their children and that although they would be Japanese by birth, I would hope they would be happy to talk about their heritage and where they are from and not mind being asked why they don't look Japanese and what the history is. I wouldnt think it racist and wouldn't want such questions to be stopped because we only learn from others, and about others, by talking and feeling safe to ask questions.

So why in the UK does everyone have to be sooo careful with what they say? This woman has a non English name, was wearing some non western clothing, as was asked about her heritage. Why is this abuse?

We need to stop being so sensitive and allow dialogue.

You should take it as a compliment he wanted to feel your arse/cat-called you.

Autism didn't used to exist when we disciplined children properly (and locked disabled people away from society and forgot about them)

The best thing I discovered today was that the late Queen wanted an exemption from the laws prohibiting private citizens from setting off nuclear explosions @Heavyraindropsarefallingonmyhead.

Excellent queenworthy behaviour right there.👸👑 I would totally want that if I was the queen.😆😳😆

Oh and....

Well, if you don't look disabled, then naturally the man/woman , in the car park is going to assume you dont have a blue badge. Thier questions about your disability are perfectly natural and you should just tell them what your disability is.

They are also exempt from Jury duty, which I'm slightly disappointed by. I'm imagining a very serious trial and everyone trying to completely act normal whilst Charles is sitting in the middle of the jury slightly huffy because he didn't get picked as foreman

I really do need to sleep at this point 😳

I think she is being totally disingenuous.

On the website Future Hackney the first line of her profile says this:

Ngozi Fulani
My parent’s came to London from the Caribbean and most of their children were born here. Seven children...

The she goes on to describe how her father discussed and taught her about her African heritage.

She was pretending not to understand Lady H.

Why have a web page about yourself and the very first thing you mention is your parent's Caribbean heritage, yet you pretend not to understand someone asking you about your family roots?

Where abouts in Africa?
Repeatedly.
Even though she told her there were no records (as there isn't usually with slavery, people weren't treated as humans, they were treated as property 😓
How can she tell her precisely where her ancestors came from when she probably doesn't have a clue herself?!
That's completely different to learning about her African heritage.
Africa is a whole continent of more than 50 countries, not just a lump!
As for moving her hair out of the way, I think I'd be taken aback if anyone did that to me!
I'd be thinking wtf, back off a bit! Personal space, anyone?! 😳😬

pollyglot · 02/12/2022 01:32

OP, I too lived for a while in Japan, and was subject to some awful racism while there. I won't go into detail, but suffice it to say that the extreme Right have some pretty unfortunate views, and some families were unhappy about having Maori homestay visitors. I certainly wouldn't extrapolate from that that all Japanese are racist, however.

Sitdowncupoftea · 02/12/2022 01:37

Well according to the latest press Lady Hussey has asked to meet NF and is waiting for her response.

TooBigForMyBoots · 02/12/2022 01:54

Good. The least SH can do is apologise to Ngozi Fulani in person.

pollyglot · 02/12/2022 02:36

Or vice versa, as the case may be.

TooBigForMyBoots · 02/12/2022 02:47

Why would Ngozi Fulani need to apologise to Lady SH?Confused

DeeCeeCherry · 02/12/2022 02:49

Arent there already 3 or 4 threads about this?

Firstly - Hussey touched her hair. The nerve. GTFOH - dont touch. I dont get the obsession with our hair, is it a fetish? Ive had to warn off people from touching my hair many a time. When they've asked, I've said no, then they still try to reach out. It makes my skin crawl.

Secondly - Repeatedly questioned where Ngozi is from, instead of accepting 1st answer.

Whats to be conflicted about, OP? If you'd be so ill-mannered and racist as to do the same thing then you'll eventually find yourself in situations like Hussey too.

We do NOT have to put up with racism on anybody's say so. Nor do we have to accommodate racism just to keep the peace.

Hussey is a fool. I have seen people say 'its her age,'. Why? Does age turn you stupid and racist? Whats the magic age when that happens then?

I come across elderly people via work who are perfectly normal, nice enough people. I wouldnt be so ageist as to suggest they're all bigots.

This is a multi-cultural country and conflicted, racists, whatever they choose to call themselves, had better get used to it and unlearn their bias because your voices are becoming ever quieter. & thats a good thing.

@Tiiiiiiiiiiired don't think you're children would be asked the same because your kids would adapt to being born in Japan and would be different to you. You're missing the point.

Peter Brookes cartoon from the Economist - he is very good.

She was being evasive, that's why Lady Susan Hussey pursued the matter. How is it that there is a word for word transcript of the conversation. Was someone recording it in order to cause trouble? Hint: yes.

So, if I'm evasive about something, people have the right to interrogate me?

She was asked a question and she answered it, truthfully!

So what's the issue?

Rubyupbeat · 02/12/2022 07:19

At first I thought she was just an elderly lady not really grasping concepts of what's acceptable to ask people.
But the more I thought about it, I realised she would have been in hundreds of gatherings like this with the queen and be much more knowledgeable about what is acceptable than most younger folk.
I actually don't feel it was racist, but definitely unacceptable not to accept her first answer and definitely not to have moved her hair.

thehorsehasnowbolted · 02/12/2022 07:29

Lady SH appears to be ill-advised. If this encounter does end up taking place, Lady SH had better record the conversation and keep full footage, for her own protection

That's why this whole circus looks less credible by the minute

Peter Brookes cartoon from the Economist - he is very good.

Imagine if it was the other woman in the cartoon. But RF is fair game, right? So much for kindness and compassion. All posturing and lies

thehorsehasnowbolted · 02/12/2022 00:09

So you do see Britain as being a white country and black people living here not the norm.

I didn't say it. Someone mentioned it upthread and why it was 'a problem' in this instance.

Britain is a majority white country though, that's a fact and not a problem.

Can you provide some proof that it’s not a problem? 🦭

thehorsehasnowbolted · 02/12/2022 07:43

Can you provide some proof that it’s not a problem?

Can you provide some proof that Japan being a majority Japanese country is 'a problem'?

What an odd thing to ask

But we are living in the UK, so YOU should provide proof. 🦭

thehorsehasnowbolted · 01/12/2022 22:43

Again, what is the scrutiny meant to achieve?

If this happened to you at work and you had to resign as a result, you would absolutely demand proof and scrutiny, wouldn't you?

It's easy to be blasé about something when it's somebody else's neck on the line

Can you provide proof that Hussey didn’t interrogate and touch Ms Fulani?
