Things in RECENT times you can’t quite believe we’re seen as ‘ok’

The Jeremy Kyle Show. Middle class man shouts at poor people who aren’t terribly bright, for not being perfect humans. So pleased it ended.

On X Factor and BGT when they used to show ‘funny’ auditions of people who believed they had talent but really didn’t so got laughed at. They then brought them back for the final to do a humiliating routine live so they could be laughed at more.

Supernanny. Childless woman who can barely speak properly pulls lemon faces, tells parents they’re shit and Instills sudden and sharp changes in the child’s home where actual camera are focussing on them when they’re distraught and upset

Sun sea and suspicious parents. Mum and dad spying on their adult children from a rooftop in Greece whilst said child gets off with a stranger. CREEPY!

I worked in a department store late 90s/early
2000s.

They had a smoking room and a bar that served from 5pm.

I worked for an insurance company around 2003 and every Friday at 2pm managers would come round with alcoholic drinks

Smoking on aeroplanes and in the cinema - you came out of both absolutely stinking.

And night clubs/bars. You would stink after a night out

Yes but it was such a great smell. When they brought in the smoking ban you could actually smell the nightclubs. Turns out cheesy feet and sweat isn’t such a nice scent.

I note that those are all television programmes. If you want to go down that route, you could have various shows where children sit on (non-related) adults' knees, Miss World, Benny Hill ...

How about things in current times that we cannot believe are okay? Looking at your phone when eating dinner in a restaurant, instead of concentrating on the conversation of the person you are with ... Visible bra straps ... Spraying deodorant under your shirt whilst sat at your office desk ....

I'm old and grumpy Grin

Agree with all that, especially the visible bra straps. Yuck.

Its tge mist disgusting smell. Like when you get in the lift and a smoker has got in there before you. I want to heave.

What about AFAB queens or drag kings?

I don’t think they exist because sex is not assigned at birth it is a fact which was present in the womb.

if you are asking what about a woman dressing up as a drag queen and therefore playing along with the stereotyping - well some women were against women getting the vote

never seen a drag king so can’t comment.

Ah but that’s a different smell. Someone smoking is gross and snells horrible. The smell of smoke in an old pub that covers the disgusting smells of the pub is lovely

The utter abuse and cruelty that the meat and dairy industry force on trillions of animals every year.

Barns, cages, anal and vaginal rape, sow cages, male chicks thrown alive in to blenders, and that's before they get to the pure hell that is a slaughter house.

And we ridicule the people who speak out about it. One day, we will hang our heads in shame. Not in my lifetime though.

This 😥

HRTQueen · 06/12/2022 21:13

Supernanny and her bullying of parents that are struggling to make a tv show. I could never understand why this show was so popular

Talent shows that allow the mocking of people with learning difficulties

making children read out loud in class I’m surprised this still happens

That a friend of mine has walked 10.4 miles today whilst picking/packing in a warehouse (he’s 6ft 4inch for reference) and has been told “to pick up the pace”.

As someone who’s over a foot shorter than him, I’d last approx 4 hours in that job.

Awful.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 06/12/2022 21:42

I also agree that one day we will look back at pet ownership and think ‘WTF were we thinking’. I especially dislike horse owners (sorry not sorry). The poor things have to lug often overweight people about and make dangerous jumps then be limited about where they can roam and how far. I know I’ll get flamed for this but we are kissing ourselves if we think we are giving let’s a good life because we give them the basics of food and not abusing them. Animals don’t belong in the custody of humans.

This is correct. I had to kneel before Mother Superior to check my skirt was 2 inches below my knees. Convent School, south London, 1970s.

I had to do this too, not a convent school but a private single sex one. The rule was no more than 4” above the knee so we kneeled upright so that they could check.
We also had knicker checks ! (We had to wear thick sweatshirt fabric ones almost like little shorts, over plain normal ones) .

Yes, we had the pants check too. Thick navy blue knickers which we also wore for gym practice with short sleeved artex shirts.

Did you have to wear white gloves in the summer?

Heyhoitsme · 07/12/2022 10:09

We had to do PE in our school knickers in first year, aged between 11 and 12. Just the age when periods are starting.

I disagree with they put over weight folks on them (horses) they don’t they are not allowed in the UK and can be reported for it.

oh and I want pets as they are my companions.

Also you’d deprive folks of their only comfort in this day age as folks don’t see another human for days on end and only have their pets

I don’t see a future without them

holy shit I remember those artex tops and mine was meant to be white the rules of the school and my mum could only get it in blue as I was a tiny wee thing back then Every PE I got the belt for not having the correct pe kit. My step dad intervened eventually.

Overweight people are very much allowed to own and ride horses, and I know plenty that do.

@ShirleyPhallus agree and I’m a non smoker. That smell of fags and beer (the scent of a beer mat or drip tray) when walking past an open pub door. Yes!

Yes ! Plus the aertex shirts worn with the thick knickers for gym. Ours were maroon though.

There was a smoking room in the staff room when I started teaching, in 2006! Unimaginable now- we don't even have a staff room 😂

In the early 2000s I was an English language assistant in a French secondary school. The smoking staff room was a given, but there was also a smoking room for the older kids...

Rolaskatox · 08/12/2022 16:30

I worked in France in 2011, and teachers and students stood right outside the front of the school smoking together 😂 here you can't smoke within about 5 miles radius of schools without getting told off!

Leaded petrol wasn't banned until 2000. There are still particles of it in the air in London! It was known at the time it was developed how bad it was for human health. www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-57564953.amp

The same guy that invented leaded petrol also invented CFCs 🤦‍♀️

Thomas Midgely contracted polio in his 40s. He developed a series of ropes and pulleys to help him get in and out of bed. He accidentally strangled himself in the ropes when he was 55.
