The Jeremy Kyle Show. Middle class man shouts at poor people who aren’t terribly bright, for not being perfect humans. So pleased it ended.

On X Factor and BGT when they used to show ‘funny’ auditions of people who believed they had talent but really didn’t so got laughed at. They then brought them back for the final to do a humiliating routine live so they could be laughed at more.

Supernanny. Childless woman who can barely speak properly pulls lemon faces, tells parents they’re shit and Instills sudden and sharp changes in the child’s home where actual camera are focussing on them when they’re distraught and upset

Sun sea and suspicious parents. Mum and dad spying on their adult children from a rooftop in Greece whilst said child gets off with a stranger. CREEPY!

YouTubers, influencers, Instagramers. It's all fake and makes me CRINGE. Imagining having to take photos outside a busy street just for the 'gram'

My ds is almost 20. He has autism and the way he was treated in various mainstream schools absolutely beggars belief looking back now. The rudeness, eye rolling and disbelief from teaching staff, the suggestions he go into a PRU, the physical restraint, which left him covered in abrasions and bruises daily. I have a younger child, also has autism and her school experiences have been the polar opposite. There's only 3 and a half years between them but huge leaps in understanding and education around autism seemed to happen over the last decade. Too late for my ds though Sad

@LondonWolf
Am very sorry your son was subjected to such treatment. And hope he's doing ok now. Thank goodness your DD's experience has been far more positive.

As you say, understanding and approaches (and, crucially, public awareness) are changing for the better.

You must be old and grumpy if you think visible bra straps are a problem 😂😂😂😂

I eat meat but I bet in a hundred years or so it’ll become a niche pursuit, and be regarded with horror by many. Synthetic substitutes have come a long way and will be indistinguishable in a few decades.

Funny, I predict the opposite with us moving away from synthetic over-processed shite (both meat and non-meat products) and resorting back to a natural diet that older generations would've had. (natural isn't the right word but I can't think of the word I'm looking for)

That's terrible. I'm glad things have changed.

Tabi boots.

What in the fuck are those?! And who on earth is wearing them? I'll add them to those Yeezy alien crocs list of fugly shoes

XenoBitch · 05/12/2022 22:25

Cookery classes in school. The boys could bring their ingredients in a manky old carrier bag. Girls had to bring theirs in a red Riding Hood style picnic basket.,

" I mean, if you can't select the right underwear in life, what does that say about you in general?"

I'd say she rightly has better priorities in her life!

Smoking on planes

Yes I think this is the biggest one for me - the fact that it was ok to smoke in planes, trains, offices, pubs, etc.

I was in Germany at the weekend and although they have largely similar rules about smoking inside now, they still have tobacconists and don't hide cigarettes in supermarkets. And there are cigarette vending machines which means there's no meaningful age restrictions on purchase. It's weird actually because I thought our rules came from the EU. We must have goldplated them.

As a result I probably did more passive smoking in a weekend than I do in a year in the UK.

It did make me wonder where you would buy a pipe from in the UK these days!

Also keeping animals as pets.

Oh goodness yes. So vacuous. But they make a lot more money than I do, so...

This has got to be a joke my god!!!!!

Certainly not a joke. My DM's best friend described herself as a cripple.

CruCru · 06/12/2022 11:33

I have friends who remember being made to kneel in front of the teacher to check their skirt was the correct length. I am middle aged though.

AgeingDoc · 06/12/2022 12:07

Don't know if it counts as recent, but as a medical student in the 80s and a junior doctor in the 90s I wasn't allowed to wear trousers. Even in theatre we had to wear silly little dresses. My friend and I nearly got ourselves sacked when we refused to comply and started walking into the men's changing room and picking up handfuls of tops and trousers and taking them through to the women's changing room. But soon almost everyone was doing it and they couldn't sack virtually the entire female workforce!
Actually there is a lot about work in those days that seems unbelievable now, not least the pre EWTD hours. In my first job I used to go into work on Friday at 8am and not finish until around 7pm on Monday, every third weekend. And as weekends and nights were technically "on call" not core working hours, we were paid very little for them, far less than for our standard hours, despite it being the toughest part of the job. Nobody would accept that now, either on patient safety or staff working conditions grounds. On call staff could get a hot meal at any time of the day or night though, and the beds in the on call rooms were changed for you. That's pretty unbelievable too by modern standards.

A friend of mine bought a pair couple of years ago.
She sent me a picture first and I thought she was joking - but a week or so later she was wearing them.
She is a very stylish, beautiful woman, but these shoes… I‘ll never understand the appeal I‘m afraid.

Those names previously mentioned Re abortion and miscarriage are seriously offensive and in no way funny. I don't even see where they have a place in "comedy". I'm generally fine with drag and don't get the problem. I assumed it was entertainment of a certain niche. I've never associated drag with misogyny before. Do drag stars actually hate women? And if so, why?

The Nuns did that.

CanadianJohn · 06/12/2022 14:21

My total experience with drag queens is watching "Priscilla Queen of the Desert" - twice. I thought it was hillarious. "Cocks in frocks", as one of the characters said.

The problem lies with what is deep down a make attitude, if you pander to them and go a long with it they are “all girlies together” in some stereotypical female role play.

actually point out that their behaviour is terrible, for all the reasons set out in this and many other threads, which includes setting a stereotype (however much they claim it’s comical does create a ripple effect - consider some recent make up/beauty trends) and playing to some stereotyped female behaviours thereby reinforcing them.

do they hate women? Don’t know, but they most certainly do not respect everything a woman stands for, there’s not a lot of comedy to be found in that

This is correct. I had to kneel before Mother Superior to check my skirt was 2 inches below my knees. Convent School, south London, 1970s.

CruCru · 06/12/2022 16:04

A friend’s children’s senior school brought in a rule that from a certain date, all pupils had to wear trousers. They said it was to be trans-inclusive but I heard it was actually because the teachers were sick of telling girls their skirt was too short.

Rolaskatox · 06/12/2022 16:10

What about AFAB queens or drag kings?

PetraBP · 06/12/2022 18:05

Better that than being told “it distracts the male teachers” 🤔

Looking back, I should have said “so are all the male teachers here perverts then?!”
