Awake in pain, can I wake my husband up for support or is that mean?

I’ve been awake for hours due to a horrid infection. I have started to feel really anxious and not sure if I need to go to a 24 hour supermarket to try and get some medicine. Should I wake my husband for support or is that mean? I know he can’t make the pain go away

as someone that is unfortunately up with a cold you over here you have my sympathy. if you need his support right now let him know. I know my dh would want to know if I had been up for hours in pain.

heldinadream · 29/11/2022 04:17

Hello OP, I'm awake with insomnia - what kind of infection? Where's the pain? Have you seen a doc and if not should you be contacting 111 instead of buying random meds? What meds would you buy?
Really hope you feel better soon.

JKDcot · 29/11/2022 04:21

Thanks so much. It’s only cystitis and I know if I can get antibiotics it will pass. But it is so painful and I am starting to panic

JKDcot · 29/11/2022 04:21

I know if I wake him up and ask for help there’s nothing he can do. But I’ve been up for so many hours and the pain isn’t easing that I’m starting to feel very anxious

I've never had cystitis- does drinking a lot help or does it make it worse?
Can he go and get painkillers for you, is that what would help?
I've got some (passes them virtually through screen to OP).
You can't buy the antibiotics over the counter though, unless you're not in the UK?

JKDcot · 29/11/2022 04:30

Yes as soon as it’s morning I’ll have to drive somewhere to get antibiotics over the counter. It’s just why does everything feel so much worse in the middle of the night???

i Have taken paracetamol and drunk plenty of water but it’s not helping yet. I’ve just made a cup of chamomile tea hoping to just settle for another few hours when it’s acceptable to wake him up. It’s really unpleasant ☹️

OP posts:
heldinadream · 29/11/2022 04:37

Ah so sorry you're suffering. Chamomile sounds like a great idea. Would a hot water bottle help? How long before you can wake him?
Surely he can go get you the abs, you don't have to drag yourself out?

Msloverlover · 29/11/2022 04:37

You can take bicarbonate of sofa for immediate relief. Use hot water bottle on your tummy (really helps as tension makes it worse). Don’t drink too much as you are just irritating your bladder more at this point.

Try taking ibuprofen as well as that can help with muscle spasms.

Personally I would try and wait it out as the meds you get from pharmacy won’t do much better than pain killers and bicarbonate do. Call docs as soon as you can.

good luck!

Weatherwax13 · 29/11/2022 04:39

Wake him up. Honestly drink as much fluid as you can. I used to get cystitis and i found if I kept glugging as much water as i could physically manage it can actually start to head it off.
Send him to the 24hr supermarket, couple of litres of cranberry juice and obviously if they have a chemist aisle he can look for cystitis sachets.
Don't suffer in silence Flowers

PollyEsther · 29/11/2022 04:41

Have you tried running a warm bath, OP. I have suffered with cystitis in the past and have been known to run a bath at this time of morning as the only way to ease it.

You have my sympathy. I can’t sleep either due to a cold, horrendous anxiety and now an awake DD complaining of ear pain even after calpol and nurofen. Must be the night of no sleep. Sad

Notmyfirstusername · 29/11/2022 04:44

I’m awake due to a UTI so understand the pain. My plan is to leave DH to sleep as I need him to drive DC to school in the morning. Do you have Netflix, I’m currently watching Wednesday as a distraction whilst mumsnetting and looking at last minute Xmas gifts? Best of luck to you.

JKDcot · 29/11/2022 04:45

So sorry to hear so many others are awake with a variety of issues… it’s just not fun is it in the middle of the night / early morning feeling unwell.

I was panicking about work tomorrow but now realised I definitely have to call in sick. I just can’t stop going to the toilet and need it to pee? I can’t even imagine trying to sleep now as I need the loo every 5 mins. Argh.

Warm bath. No bubbles. Weeing in warm bath is less painful I find. Bicarbonate of soda as others have suggested (does the same thing as supermarket sachets) lots of water, sip warm water if that helps. It's horrible. Look into mannose d when shops open. Hope you feel better soon.

JKDcot · 29/11/2022 04:46

Does anyone who gets cystitis know if it’s better to keep peeing even if only a few drops come out or try and hold it in? I’m not sure if it’s causing more irritation

OP posts:
Whataplonkerheis · 29/11/2022 04:47

You can get antibiotics for this over the counter at some Boots.

you need to buy a test kit for £10, download an app, take the test and upload the results. If the test is positive the pharmacist can prescribe ABs, I think it £15.

I find holding it until there is enough for a decent wee is better for me. Keep drinking lots of water to flush it through. Bicarbonate of soda will really take the sting out of it

JKDcot · 29/11/2022 04:50

Thank you all. By bicarbonate of soda do you just mean normal cooking stuff? I think we have it in the kitchen for baking cakes? Do I just put a spoonful in water?

Oh you poor thing. I've been awake since 3 getting more and more anxious about work trip I'm taking today. Need to be up at 5 but only had a few hours sleep and will be dead on my feet later at the airport 😞
I've no UTI experience but am here in solidarity and hope some of the advice helps.
Have you anything stronger than paracetamol? Is bath an option?

JKDcot · 29/11/2022 04:52

Also should I try and wash myself with soap and water? Does that help or make it worse? Obviously I shower and wash normally every day. Just right now I don’t know if soap will help or make it worse

the pain is currently only relieved if I have literally just peed and can sit on the loo ….??

JKDcot · 29/11/2022 04:52

I’ve considered running a bath but it will wake everyone up, so I’ve held off…

I'm up with my 3 month old but I remember being up with cystitis pre pregnancy-oh the pain! I ended up in the bath, with a bar of fruit and nut and 2x 2 Litre bottles of water overnight, just drinking, eating and topping up the hot water in the bath until it was daylight. My mum then dropped round some of those cystitis sachets which helped and I didn't need to get antibiotics. You can get the cystitis sachets to try first over the counter for a reasonable price. Although one time I did let it get so bad in lockdown that I was bed ridden, with the shakes, and even the feeling of my little puppy snuggled up into my back was agony (GP later told me off for leaving it so long that it looked like it was spreading to my kidneys) so if it doesn't get any better then antibiotics may be a good shout!

Namaste6 · 29/11/2022 04:56

Completely with @Weatherwax13 OP. I used to suffer terribly. Your focus at this point is to reduce the acidity in your urine. Drink a lot of water - diluted with cranberry juice if possible. Also the cystitis sachets will help too and you can get these from any 24 store or supermarket.

My attacks used to come on in the small hours. My husband would sit up with me, monitoring the copious amount of cranberry / water I had to drink and ticking each glass off on a sheet (bless him).

It may not be a cure but it will bring relief. You'll need to call your gp in the morning to (possibly) get antibiotics if necessary.

Re waking him, it depends on your relationship, but if it were me my husband would hear me pacing and wake anyway.

I can literally feel your pain, such is my experience with cystitis. Get well soon x

JKDcot · 29/11/2022 04:57

The only place I’m getting any relief is sitting on the toilet constantly peeing little bits. This is really bad and I’m getting a bit scared

OP posts:
JKDcot · 29/11/2022 04:58

Thank you all for your kind words. I’ve decided to run the bath. I need some relief

Trumpton · 29/11/2022 05:03

Please wake your DH so he can monitor your bath. You might need a bit of help if you feel woozy.
