Awake in pain, can I wake my husband up for support or is that mean?

I’ve been awake for hours due to a horrid infection. I have started to feel really anxious and not sure if I need to go to a 24 hour supermarket to try and get some medicine. Should I wake my husband for support or is that mean? I know he can’t make the pain go away

It’s agony and you have my absolute sympathy OP. Definitely don’t use lots of soap, that may cause further irritation. When I’m desperate I find that the only way to ease the pain slightly is to take paracetamol and codeine, plus ibuprofen if it’s unbearable, or alternate them every three hours. I also shower, and wee in the shower standing up as somehow that decreases the pain of urination. Baths don’t help me at all, but showers do. Last time I had it I just got into the shower every time I needed to go but I was passing blood by this time. If you ring the doc they will normally ask you for a specimen but then can test it pretty quickly. I hope you get sorted out soon.

stuntbubbles · 29/11/2022 05:04

Definitely wake him up. Glad you’re having a bath. Stay there to pee and send him to get the antibiotics, cranberry juice, refill your water bottle – keep hydrating to flush it out – fetch medicine, and just hold your hand (figuratively and literally). It’s awful.

I’m firmly on Team Wake-up – I’ve got PGP and can’t get out of bed or turn over without DP’s help, have fallen over trying, and he’s been very clear: wake me!

Drink, drink and drink some more. Do not hold any urine in - it's completely acidic at this point and you need to make it more alkaline - the dilution via fluids will do this.

Absolutely no soapy water. This is likely to make it much much worse by upsetting the ph balance further.

If you are shivering, feeling nauseous, have kidney pain and running a temperature call NHS out of hours for more specific advice. If the cystitis has moved further up the uriinary tract towards the kidneys, you'll likely need an antibiotic asap.

marvellousmaple · 29/11/2022 05:08

Wake him up. Get in the bath. Send him for cranberry juice and Ural sachets ( not sure of what they are called in the UK but if asks he will get them. Cystitis medicine - small sachets that you dissolve in water and fizz. Drink copious amounts of water and then the cranberry juice. Take at least 2 sachets of the cystitis medicine. Sit on the loo as long as you need to. You should be right by later today but worth going to your GP or wherever you need to for antibiotics as it can get worse quite quickly.

marvellousmaple · 29/11/2022 05:09

Yes stop the soap!!!

JKDcot · 29/11/2022 05:28

Thank you so much everyone. All the advice and messages remind me that people are kind.

I’ve had the bath with no soap, started to feel quite nauseous in there - so got out. Feeling a little bit better now although still peeing every 10 mins now. This pain is horrendous and I feel sympathy for those who suffer with this frequently. It’s horrible

There’s no way to get any rest / sleep due to the constant need to pee?

I also am starting to feel very sick and like I might throw up? Is this just anxiety or actually
possible to do with the cystitis? I checked my
temperature and don’t have a fever

MajesticWhine · 29/11/2022 05:35

I don't usually feel nauseous with it.
Just keep taking sips of water. Try and get some rest if you can. Ibuprofen can help with the pain. The sachets you can buy over the counter might help but I would phone GP first thing.

Namaste6 · 29/11/2022 05:37

Wake your husband and start drinking now. He'll need to get cranberry juice and sachets.

You're panicking as the irritation in your bladder will be making you feel horrendous. Honestly, trust me - get these fluids in now and plenty of them - quickly. You'll be peeing like there's no tomorrow but relief will come.

stuntbubbles · 29/11/2022 05:37

possibly anxiety, possibly exhaustion. Lack of sleep makes me nauseous.

Have you woken DH?

I’d be tempted to send him to get incontinence pads or knickers so you can get some real lying down rest but continue peeing when you need to.

Even if you don’t do that, wake him up so you can be looked after.

BabyPotato · 29/11/2022 05:37

Poor you. I am just getting over an UTI that needed two lots of antibiotics and it sucked! I definitely had nausea and aches and most of all the horrible cramps and painful wees. Not nice. DH looked after me, and I'm sure you could wake yours up for some support.

I think Boots and Lloyds can give you antibiotics if you need it. I did an online consultation and was sent tablets the next day. The UTI came back immediately so I had to ring the GP anyway, but they were very good and gave me another prescription on the day and I dropped off a sample later. I hope yours gets sorted soon! Would recommend a hot water bottle and cocodamol.

JKDcot · 29/11/2022 05:38

Thank you all again. I think I just feel nauseous cause of being anxious and stressed about it now. I didn’t realise the pain could be so intense for so long.

more water and just keeping drinking till it’s morning

Sorry majesticwine but not sipping. Get the first glass in quickly and drink a glass every 20 minutes or so until you start to feel less like peeing glass and more like peeing liquid.

Namaste6 · 29/11/2022 05:43

Also, pain relief will help but if you're feeling nauseous already (and possibly have an empty stomach) have a slice of bread or something equally as bland along with the paracetamol.

No coffee, tea or OJ.

JKDcot · 29/11/2022 05:48

Think I’ve realised I’m just hungry not nauseous…. Been awake since 2am so probably just need to eat.

im so grateful for everyone commenting and supporting me. What do you all do if you can’t sleep or feel unwell for distraction? I’ve wanted to read my book but I’m in my
sons bedroom and don’t want the light to wake him. Now I’m browsing ridiculously priced houses just to look at their interiors??? Anyone else? I just need distraction

Bicarbonate of soda helps with the nausea and pain. I used to live on it with cystitis. I used to go round with a bottle constantly drinking small sips. One teaspoon in a glass or a bit more in a 500ml bottle. If you get cranberry juice, it should be the 100% pure version, not the stuff from the supermarket, which will help a little I imagine but is only 10% with sugar etc. Try health food places eg Holland and Barrett.

JKDcot · 29/11/2022 05:57

Maybe I’m being super melodramatic. But this is really not pleasant at all

I bet he says you should have woken me. I would hate to think of someone awake in pain, DS did once when we had suspected appendicitis, I eventually took him to A&E. I felt awful he was up all night on his own. I’d have slept on the little sofa next to him had I known

I read these posts but don't usually comment. Sending hugs and relief very soon for you.

I'm a chronic insomniac. I watch Netflix (subtitles), read mumsnet classics or AMA, look at cats on reddit, look up crochet patterns ideas. Sometimes middle of the night me likes to buy things online. She's not allowed out of her box too often 😂 (genuinely fighting the urge to buy wool right now)

QueSyrahSyrah · 29/11/2022 06:04

Eugh OP I've been there. Drink as much water as you can, and hold your pee as long as you can. Use anything possible as a distraction, TV, or if you have one an addictive game on your phone (candy crush, Woodoku that kind of thing).

I find sitting up less painful / easier than lying down so I usually prop myself up in the corner of the corner couch.

Myshitisreal · 29/11/2022 06:06

If you've never used reddit the Could definitely be a massive distraction and time waster. Just typing in keywords of things you like. Or look at things like r/oddlysatisfying r/aww , places you live, food, hobbies, weird sex stuff if you're that way inclined 😂 🥰

merrymelodies · 29/11/2022 06:10

I used to suffer from chronic cystitis. It can be sooo painful! If I don't have any antibiotics or painkillers to hand, I find lying in a warm bath and weeing helps. Yes it's nasty but I shower afterwards! Drink as much water as you can manage but avoid acidic liquids or caffeine or alcohol.

merrymelodies · 29/11/2022 06:12

TikTok is a great distraction!Smile

JKDcot · 29/11/2022 06:19

I’m still awake and still uncomfortable… given up on any concept of sleep. Walking husband in 15 mins just for a cuddle

thank you everyone for all the kindness

Honestly once it has properly set in, there really isn’t any point drinking gallons of water, you are just irritating your bladder further, bicarbonate of soda will take the sting out. Give your bladder a chance to rest.
