Awake in pain, can I wake my husband up for support or is that mean?

I’ve been awake for hours due to a horrid infection. I have started to feel really anxious and not sure if I need to go to a 24 hour supermarket to try and get some medicine. Should I wake my husband for support or is that mean? I know he can’t make the pain go away

Oh poor you OP - I think cystitis is one of the worst pains there is. I never go to the drs, ever - but I did once for a UTI, the pain is horrendous.

I would order some high strength cranberry tablets to take after you've finished your antibiotics to prevent it coming back. I hope it eases off for you soon.

speakout · 29/11/2022 09:15

I wouldn't wake him.
But I am pretty self sufficient emotionally-and if I woke him he would be useless to help during the day or his work would suffer.

Greblegable · 29/11/2022 09:18

I don’t blame the op for panicking. Cystitis can be a mild inconvenience or it can end up with kidney infections and hospitalisation. It can be awful. I remember the panic of realising it’s come back. It can be really painful and unpleasant even when it’s not serious.

also I’ve vomited with it before so being nauseous makes sense to me it might not just be anxiety. I also once lost control of my bladder so I am very wary of it now!

op something else to try alongside the antibiotics is D-mannose. I take it now if I ever think it’s starting again and I’ve never had a full blown infection since. I went through 5 years of getting it once every 3 months but it’s been 10 years with just chugging d-mannose occasionally now!

JKDcot · 29/11/2022 04:30

Yes as soon as it’s morning I’ll have to drive somewhere to get antibiotics over the counter. It’s just why does everything feel so much worse in the middle of the night???

i Have taken paracetamol and drunk plenty of water but it’s not helping yet. I’ve just made a cup of chamomile tea hoping to just settle for another few hours when it’s acceptable to wake him up. It’s really unpleasant ☹️

Are you taking anti inflammatory pain killers - paracetamol or even something with codeine as well.
I have interstitial cystitis and nothing touch the pain other than co-codomol. obviously don’t take it for too long- but it really helps at night as it also makes you drowsy.

not all UTI are bacterial - and be careful about self prescribing antibiotics - taking them when you have a viral infection not bacterial infection can clause resistance which means when you do get bacterial infection they won’t work.

Personally, if I had UTI, I couldn’t stay away form loo long enough to drive myself to supermarket for painkillers or whatever, ask husband..apologise for waking him.

Greblegable · 29/11/2022 09:20

Oh I wouldn’t use cranberry juice. The bit that helps cystitis in it is in such low quantity it doesn’t help.

Newlifestartingatlast · 29/11/2022 09:22

JKDcot · 29/11/2022 04:52

Also should I try and wash myself with soap and water? Does that help or make it worse? Obviously I shower and wash normally every day. Just right now I don’t know if soap will help or make it worse

the pain is currently only relieved if I have literally just peed and can sit on the loo ….??

Avoid soap anywhere near your urethra, vagina etc…not good.

one thing you Amy want to try, is a warm bath- not too hot . I find that relieves pain for a while but obviously you can’t sit in it all day 🥴

Ethelfromnumber73 · 29/11/2022 09:23

Please get some antibiotics from your GP. It's really important to correctly treat a UTI (chronic UTI veteran here)

JKDcot · 29/11/2022 09:23

Thank you all for your kind messages and advice. I’ve called the Drs surgery and waiting for GP to ring back. Sent my husband to the shops to get the sachets as no bicarbonate of soda at home. Hoping it will pass and I’ll feel better today.

I understand why some people post mean comments. I know I’m being over the top but I felt overwhelmed, in a lot of pain and unsure what to do. The kind advice really helps

Thank you all. By bicarbonate of soda do you just mean normal cooking stuff? I think we have it in the kitchen for baking cakes? Do I just put a spoonful in water?

Yes. Its pretty horrible to drink though. When Ibwas younger, before you could get thenover the counter sachets the advice was a large glass of bicarb in water every hour.

Nospringchix · 29/11/2022 09:40

JKDcot · 29/11/2022 07:34

Thank you all so much for your kind messages.

my husband has been really kind and I’ve had some more chamomile tea and painkillers. It’s starting to ease a bit and I’m going to try and get some sleep.

Will call the doctor to try and get prescription for antibiotics. I’m a bit nervous to take them as last time I had a wisdom tooth infection and took them I had a bad tummy and had to stop them…. Anyone know which ones are gentle on the stomach or just not strong / kick ass ones??

Don't worry, they tend to use different antibiotics for utis than they do for wisdom tooth infections. I usually get trimethoprim or nitrofurantoin for a uti and they don't upset my stomach.
Totally different kettle of fish to those awful metronidazole I've had for dental infections!

Hope you get sorted and feel better soon, UTIs are really miserable. 💐.

SevernEleven · 29/11/2022 09:41

When I used to have this I found that lying down with lower back/hips elevated on a pillow helped and stopped the urge to wee all the time.

Jenhen89 · 29/11/2022 09:43

Never ever use soap in your down below bits, especially if you have cystitis. You can get the cystitis sachets, I think it’s 3 a day for a few days. Keep drinking water to flush out the infection.

Ethelfromnumber73 · 29/11/2022 09:46

UTI pain can be horrific. I really don't understand some of the comments

UniversalAunt · 29/11/2022 09:47

Ditto high strength cranberry tablets, our pharmacist gave these to my husband for his low level UTI. Worked well.

Note to self to add bicarb, emergency can of 7-Up for medical use, cystitis sachets alongside the FirstAid supplies. Check hot water bottles are in good condition.

@JKDcot hope you soon feel better.
TY everyone for sensible tips.

spiderlight · 29/11/2022 09:51

If your husband can get some Cystopurin, it's much much more effective than the other sachets. He might need to ask the pharmacist for it. It's the only one that works for me.

MummyJ36 · 29/11/2022 09:55

Ouch! I’ve had cystitis 3 times in my life and each time has been misery. I’m usually one to go down a natural route but I’m afraid it was only the antibiotics that really kicked it in the arse! Just make sure you look after yourself when you have them, ideally take a prebiotic too (yoghurt, drink or pill). It will pass I promise!

WhatIsThisPlease · 29/11/2022 09:58

Poor you OP

I used to suffer with this so badly, it's horrendous.

Firstly, if you have cystitis/UTI do NOT drink cranberry juice. It's literally the worst thing you can have. Full of sugar and way too acidic. It will irritate the lining of your bladder.

Hot water bottles are your friend!! The heat relieves the muscle spasms. Also, the brain struggles to differentiate between heat and pain so it really does help.

Try not to drink silly amounts. It doesn't 'flush it out' it just upsets your bladder and urethra because they're going into overdrive.

Antibiotics will kick in really quickly. If this is something you get often, it's worth buying some from Superdrug and keeping them in your bathroom cabinet. For me, the sooner I take them, the quicker my bladder goes back to normal.

Really hope you're feeling better soon and manage to catch up on some sleep through the day.

TheChosenTwo · 29/11/2022 10:00

Don’t think any of the comments are mean at all!
It’s a UTI, painful but easily treatable with otc medicines. I’d not appreciate being woken up by my dh for any reason other than he was dying.
Hope you manage to get some relief today OP, they are rotten 💐

Dartmoorcheffy · 29/11/2022 10:01

Hope you feel better soon. Its such an uncomfortable and painful thing. I've had it recurring since I was a little girl.
If you have a cup or a little jug, fill it with luke warm water and pour it over the area when you have a wee. It does help.

gannett · 29/11/2022 10:01

Never had cystitis but definitely woken up in severe pain/discomfort and I get wanting to wake your partner for comfort but in my cases there was realistically nothing he could do.

I think OP probably got a lot more useful practical advice posting on here than waking her husband!

whatsup00 · 29/11/2022 10:04

This is just a random piece of advice for anyone who is reading but I found washing/rinsing with either bottled water or filtered water made a massive difference to me (after a wee).

It really helped me so I thought I'd mention it, in case it might help someone else.

xogossipgirlxo · 29/11/2022 10:15

Hi OP. I am hoping you'll feel better soon. If I can suggest something, I have noticed you need to see GP to get antibiotics for this sort of infection. In Poland these are prescription-free, and Polish pharmacies in the UK sell them. It's basically the same stuff you'd get from GP (they used to be prescription only too in Poland, but then it got easier thank God). If you google "Furaginum Polish pharmacy", you'll find where you can buy it and keep one packet just in case. I don't know if I can post a link here, so I better don't. Hot water bottle helps enormously too.

JKDcot · 29/11/2022 04:21

I know if I wake him up and ask for help there’s nothing he can do. But I’ve been up for so many hours and the pain isn’t easing that I’m starting to feel very anxious

I've had at least 20 of these, drink drink drink water, eventually after a couple hours it usually dilutes enough to not sting anymore

XmasElf10 · 29/11/2022 10:22

Sit in the bath and drink litres of water. You can then pee without getting up and down, stay warm and flush out the bugs.

JKDcot · 29/11/2022 10:23

GP prescribed antibiotics so that will sort it out today. Very grateful!

random one. Are you never meant to wash your down below bits with soap or body wash / shower gel?
