Posting for traffic🙏🏻

Since last night I’ve developed an awful, painful paroxysmal cough (along with aches, runny nose etc). Basically I am coughing till I vomit and the cough spasms are so painful - feels like I’m going to burst a goddamn blood vessel!😵

Please share you remedies and tips? I am desperate 💩💩💩

You need a poo?

Have you done a covid test?

Ah right.

Have you done a covid test?

Would covorrrrrnia help?

Night nurse or Actifed multi action cough syrup.

CCSS15 · 28/11/2022 21:20

Pholcodine was the only thing that worked when I had covid

rcat74 · 28/11/2022 21:20

Can someone get you a salbutamol inhaler? You can buy them over the counter or have a phone appointment with the GP and ask for one. I used to be like this when I was ill until I started on inhalers.

FallopianTubeTrain · 28/11/2022 21:20

Breathe in to the count of 4, hold it for 4, breathe out for 4 and keep doing that until it stops. It can take a while but it will work.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 28/11/2022 21:21

Viral pneumonia is going around at the moment

Heavyraindropsarefallingonmyhead · 28/11/2022 21:22

I agree with the breathing thing suggested. Also when you breath out purse your lips and blow out like you are trying to blow candles out. I find it can help me cough less.

I also second the suggestion to talk to the GP about an inhaler.

Are you coughing anything up?

KitchenFleur · 28/11/2022 21:22

Put some pans on to boil and sit and breathe in the steam.
Vicks vapo rub on the soles of your feet, socks on over the top.

Sparkletastic · 28/11/2022 21:23

Another vote for Pholcodine.

Changingmynameyetagain · 28/11/2022 21:23

Use a numbing throat spray

ultrachloraseptic.com/can-throat-sprays-help-a-cough/

I do this whenever I have a cough and it calms it down enough so I can fall asleep.

Suboptimalsitch · 28/11/2022 21:25

There’s a lot of RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) about at the moment. If it’s not covid or flu it could be that.

Hangupsrus · 28/11/2022 21:30

Codeine is a cough suppressant, you may be able to get the liquid prescribed tomorrow if you can get an on the day appointment given you are coughing so badly, failing that you can buy 8/500 cocodomol over the counter.

LydiaGwilt · 28/11/2022 21:30

Sugar free chewing gum - If I've got a cough I just keep a piece in my mouth for hours.

LizzieSiddal · 28/11/2022 21:33

Letting chocolate slowly dissolve in your mouth helped me when I had bronchitis.

iswintercoming · 28/11/2022 22:15

Thanks everyone💞

I’m losing the will here😵‍💫

I’ve got a steroid asthma inhaler already as I have allergy triggered asthma, so usually need to take that daily.

I’ve got a humidifier on, to moisten the air as well.

Unfortunately, I can’t take codeine as it makes me have terrible palpitations, and ny heart is already racing due to the fever / chills.

Will ring GP in morning and see if I can get a phone call. Starting to worry as my chest is making weird clicks and crackles.

Am not coughing Ip much gunk, unless I vomit and then there seems to be loads of it along with regular vomit. Sorry if tmi!

Probs I need to woman up a bit, but the coughing is so intense, it feels like I’ve strained myself!

I get a dry cough that becomes almost like a spasm it's so horrible! The only thing that works is a hot drink with honey lemon and cayenne pepper. The pepper numbs the throat and creates a kind of distraction from the tickle. Only thing that works when it's really bad!

AriettyHomily · 28/11/2022 22:18

I'm just getting over bronchitis. Nothing helps to be honest apart from riding it out.

Heavyraindropsarefallingonmyhead · 28/11/2022 22:22

Definitely call the doctor if you are already on an inhaler. Once or twice I've needed a course of steroids for a particularly bad cough

The asthma nurse might be able to help as well if you aren't able to speak to a Dr. Last time I just gave the triage nurse my symptoms and she went and got a prescription sorted for me

ArrrMeHearties · 28/11/2022 22:26

14wks pregnant and have the same symptoms and on top of morning sickness it is hellish. I can't take anything other than honey and lemon and paracetamol and its not fun at all. Feel rotten as I've passed it on to dh now :(

SkylightSkylight · 28/11/2022 22:27

I hope you can get some sleep & some help in the morning. Is anyone home with you?

I LOVE living alone, until I'm unwell then it's just scary! I hope you're not alone xx

TimeSlipMushroom · 28/11/2022 22:36

I've just survived a week of this. It was grim but helped a little by: head over a bowl of hot water, sipping warm to hot water (I used a flask), sucking cough sweets, staying propped up with pillows.
I also wore a fleece to bed to keep my chest warm when I kept sitting up to cough.
It will pass in time. Rest when you can and try to stay calm.

hampsteadmum · 28/11/2022 22:38

My GP increased my inhaler dose when I was in a similar situation a few weeks ago. He suggested that I get 4 puffs a day (preventative/steroid inhaler-clenil modulite 200) for 7 days. The cough went away in a couple of days after the dose increase. Obviously speak to your GP or asthma nurse before increasing any doses though.

Take an anti-histamine. After a recent cold I couldn't stop coughing because I'd developed a severe post-nasal drip. The anti-histamine dried it right up and the coughing stopped. I take Loratadine (the generic OTC stuff is cheaper than Claritin) but other anti-histamines should do the job.
