Can’t stop coughing - please help!?

iswintercoming · 28/11/2022 21:08

Posting for traffic🙏🏻

Since last night I’ve developed an awful, painful paroxysmal cough (along with aches, runny nose etc). Basically I am coughing till I vomit and the cough spasms are so painful - feels like I’m going to burst a goddamn blood vessel!😵

Please share you remedies and tips? I am desperate 💩💩💩

When did the tests change? Friend who is a HCP gave us some of hers quite recently and I did one yesterday just in case and it was nose and throat….. not Covid apparently…..

Thyme tea with honey. It's a wonder drug.

Queenofscones · 29/11/2022 09:39

You don't put test sticks down your throat any more, just up your nose. We haven't had throat swabs for nearly two years. Have you had the vaccinations? It could be Covid. There seems to be a lot of it about at the moment.

Oh I didn’t realise, I’ve got a few old tests knocking about the cupboard from when they were free. Have just sent OH to chemist to get new test, 40,000 throat lozenges and Night Nurse!

Lots of reports on covid Twitter showing the 'nose only' LFTs are far more accurate if you tickle your tonsils too. I've even read something about the inside of cheek being important too. Will try to find links.

longtompot · 29/11/2022 15:59

I've just bought some Bronchostop. Reminds me of the smell of Jeyes fluid and the viscosity of the meds Nanny McPhee gave the children. Better work🤢

caravanlife · 29/11/2022 16:05

I had this about 2/3 after covid randomly, I think it was a new bug from nursery, I was coughing till I was gagging really weird, never had anything like this, luckily coughing has passed after a week or so and now I have sinusitis. I booked a doctors appointment last week with the horrid cough but seems to be passing so will go and see dr about the sinusitis, as it's really painful and no snot coming out. Sorry that was really long winded 🙈 but please book a doctors appointment if you are concerned in anyway! Hope your feeling better soon Xx

stewielouie · 29/11/2022 16:08

I’ve not read all replies sorry so might have already been suggested. A runny nose can cause post nasal drip where the snot tickles the back of the throat. Kids get it lots. It causes an awful cough once it starts! Can you use decongestants like sudafed? And saline nasal spray?

caravanlife · 29/11/2022 16:08

Just read your most recent comments and sounds like my covid symptoms, it was the first time I had it on Halloween. 😞

MissMarpleRocks · 29/11/2022 16:10

Please be careful. I currently have pneumonia & it’s Grim x

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 29/11/2022 16:18

I'm hopefully starting to recover from this and yes I'm sleeping in a chair to help. Not been brave enough to try it but vinegar and lemon was recommended by someone else who had it. I've been on honey, lemon and hot water (whisky at bedtime)

grayhairdontcare · 29/11/2022 16:19

Honey and lemon drinks
Vics on chest, back and bottom of feet.
Sit propped up with cushions.
Clean out your nose with saline .
Night nurse for sleep .

pattihews · 29/11/2022 18:39

Because of course Vapour rub on the bottom of you feet is going to help your cough... Positively medieval. It'll be poultices and compresses next!

The epic cough-a-thon continues, I’ve burst a blood vessel on my cheek I think! Ribs feel fecked from straining. I’m like a cartoon character with bulging eyes!☠️☠️☠️

Broncho Stop

LadyEggs · 30/11/2022 09:03

I'm still coughing and still off work OP. I feel like shite. I had Covid for the first time in August and it wiped me out for two weeks. This is worse on my lungs but I feel generally unwell with it too. When will it end? 😩

MissMarpleRocks oh no! What pneumonia like? How did you find out? Flowers

Oh no, that sounds awful, but I hear you!

I’ve not felt this dreadful since I had swine flu in 2011! So it must be a particularly nasty flu strain to say the least🤧

According to my watch I managed a whopping 2h48 sleep last night🥴

It’s not Covid though - finally did the test from chemist this morning.

DH has been like this. Only thing that helps him is gallons of hot tea. Nothing else even the other remedies going around don't do a thing.

Terracottage · 30/11/2022 12:37

I found cough expectorant helped more than cough suppressant, but other than when I had covid (worth a test?) the only time it's been that bad was when I have had chest infections, so you might need antibiotics.

NotSorry · 30/11/2022 12:43

solidarity @iswintercoming I've been unwell for nearly 2 weeks with the same - on Monday I came up in a rash too which went after a couple of hours - GP thinks it's my body trying to fight the infection - am now on day 3 of the antibiotics and feeling a bit better today. It's not covid, I've done countless tests. Still coughing though and have pulled a muscle in my back from it - ouch!

tensmumm · 30/11/2022 12:51

Glad I opened this thread as I have some new ideas to try. My fever was 39-40c for 4 days so I was already exhausted then as soon as that started improving the coughing got worse. The mucus and post nasal drip makes it so much worse. My breastbone and between the shoulder blades are especially painful. Do you have this pain too? I tested negative for Covid so assumed it was flu and now sinusitis too.

I hope everyone suffering with this finds some relief soon. Next time I can stand up I'm getting some antihistamines.

MissShapesMissStakes · 30/11/2022 13:08

Me and my mum have just had this. Awful cough. Really rattly chest and cough. Horrible. Much sympathy.

My mum ended up on steroid tablets and antibiotics as a precaution. Almost admitted to hospital. But they did keep saying it's 'just' a viral thing.

Def not covid as me and my kids just had that a month ago and it was nothing at all as bad as this bug.

Dr told us that all bugs this year will be supercharged and our bodies aren't used to the fight. She advised a face mask if anywhere indoors and busy.

Anyway, for the cough the main thing that helped was head over a steaming bowl of water regularly through the day and night.
And drink lots.
Mine took a week to calm down. Though I have asthma and was also very wheezy.
My mum is still struggling and more so. But during the day it's a lot better.

Hope you're over it soon.

woulducouldushouldu · 30/11/2022 13:28

I have been down with this for a week. Just got my hands on a bottle of Pholocodine and my god I feel amazing. Still have the slight need to cough but not attempting to cough my kings up every 10 mins.
