Can’t stop coughing - please help!?

iswintercoming · 28/11/2022 21:08

Posting for traffic🙏🏻

Since last night I’ve developed an awful, painful paroxysmal cough (along with aches, runny nose etc). Basically I am coughing till I vomit and the cough spasms are so painful - feels like I’m going to burst a goddamn blood vessel!😵

Please share you remedies and tips? I am desperate 💩💩💩

Meant to add, for dry coughs, pholcodine or co-codemol.

Thanks everyone💞

I’m losing the will here😵‍💫

I’ve got a steroid asthma inhaler already as I have allergy triggered asthma, so usually need to take that daily.

I’ve got a humidifier on, to moisten the air as well.

Unfortunately, I can’t take codeine as it makes me have terrible palpitations, and ny heart is already racing due to the fever / chills.

Will ring GP in morning and see if I can get a phone call. Starting to worry as my chest is making weird clicks and crackles.

Am not coughing Ip much gunk, unless I vomit and then there seems to be loads of it along with regular vomit. Sorry if tmi!

Probs I need to woman up a bit, but the coughing is so intense, it feels like I’ve strained myself!

I am literally experiencing all of this right now!! I’ve just had a cold apple from the fridge to help with the sweating, and I’m sucking in a Jakeman’s honey & lemon lozenge for the coughing. Wishing you better!

If you can hear crackling sounds I would get checked out in case whatever you have is or has developed into a chest infection. Your symptoms sound like my friends who is just getting over RSV which takes about 2 weeks to go (as long as it hadn't turned into a bacterial infection) I hope you are soon over the worst

Cadenza12 · 28/11/2022 22:56

Firstly see your GP, 111 or whatever but do medical advice. You could try an infusion of fresh thyme and ginger chopped and boiled. May give some relief.

moggerhanger · 28/11/2022 22:56

Benylin chesty cough linctus. Saved my bacon recently from a horrendous cough. Just don't try to drive, operate anything more complicated than a tin opener, or stay awake.

Msgrieves · 28/11/2022 23:00

Sounds like a chest infection, prop yourself up and you will sleep when you can't not sleep in my experience. Definitely Dr's when you can.

The Dr said to me, if you are bracing yourself to be able to breathe call someone. So I go by that.

longtompot · 28/11/2022 23:00

I've had this awful cold @iswintercoming which wasn't covid. The only thing that has helped my cough is hot honey and lemon drinks and having a shot of whisky in at bedtime as a hot toddy. Covonia tickly cough medicine has helped a bit, and make sure you drink lots of water. But, after two nights on not sleeping due to coughing, the second I 'slept' sitting upright I got some nightnurse and that really helped me get some rest.
Its been just over a week now and I am feeling so much better but still have the cough.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 28/11/2022 23:02

I had that sort of cough with Covid (early on, Wuhan variety, so could be all different now). Coughing and coughing so much I couldn’t sleep, waking myself up coughing.

Benylin night coughs helps me quite a lot. Couldn’t get any at that time, but usually it does. Also I had to sleep propped up on a lot of pillows.

heartbroken22 · 28/11/2022 23:03

Don't have anything cold. Especially cold water. Drink chamomile tea atleast 2-3 times a day it helps.

Elbo7 · 28/11/2022 23:26

I've no remedy help but I had a similar sounding cough a few years ago and it turned out to be whooping cough.

If you Google you can find you tube vids of the sound of the cough, just in case it sounds familiar.

If it does turn out to be that I think the earlier you get tested and diagnosed then you can have medicine to help. I found out way too late (2 months after!) and couldn't have anything by then.

Hope you're ok OP

iswintercoming · 28/11/2022 23:33

Thank you so much everyone for being so kind 🥲💐🥴

Propped up and sipping warm lemon and honey drink, I’ve taken some Piriton and nasal steroid and an extra puff of inhaler. Head feels proper pulsing from all the hacking!

You’re all lovely😻

Reading with interest. We've all got RSV in our house and the bloody coughing is non stop. We have to keep restarting conversations and rewinding TV shows. The noise alone is driving me nuts but the coughing is a nightmare.

gamerchick · 28/11/2022 23:43

There's a weird flu going around with those symptoms. Knocks you right on your arse. Scary how fast the cough come on. Taught me a lesson about pelvic floor exercises and the lacking.

Night nurse helps.

Nschotschi · 29/11/2022 00:20

Ribwort plantain tea really helps if it's a dry cough.

tealandteal · 29/11/2022 01:39

Sounds weird but putting Vaporub on your feet at bedtime really helps with the cough so you can get some sleep.

HedgehogPrincess · 29/11/2022 01:45

Google chest percussion, it might help.

Whattodo121 · 29/11/2022 01:53

I’ve got a chest infection and have been prescribed steroids and antibiotics and am currently propped up on the sofa as I have been trying to get to sleep since 10.30pm upstairs and no joy! The steroids have made me feel completely wired and I’ve got post nasal drip every time I lie down so have been coughing constantly. Thankfully DS is at school tomorrow and the dog is at daycare so I can snooze on the sofa all day if necessary. The annoying thing is that if I’m just at the right angle I don’t cough or wheeze at all, but I have no idea how I’m going to sleep like that 😭 I’m still completely wide awake as well bloody prednisone. The GP said today that there was a lot of it going round. Everyone I know is poorly at the moment I think. Get well soon everyone!

WouldUShouldI · 29/11/2022 05:45

I had exactly the same 2 weeks ago, eventually I went to the doctors and was prescribed steroids and antibiotics as I had bronchitis. The coughing soon stopped. I hope you are better soon.

Mummieslncorporated · 29/11/2022 07:28

Bronchostop works brilliantly for me for some coughs - but the ones it doesn't work for, I haven't found anything that helps.

Newlychosencatservant · 29/11/2022 07:43

I was like this earlier in the year, was starting to think I had whooping cough at one point. The only thing that gave me a slight relief from the constant coughing was eating pickled onions!

iswintercoming · 29/11/2022 09:09

Thank you all for sharing more tips🙏🏻

It came on so quickly yesterday and has totally floored me. I was up and cleaning the kitchen yesterday morning and by lunchtime I started coughing uncontrollably and puked all my lunch up, then the fever kicked in and aches etc..

The crackling seems to have calmed down a bit, but the paroxysmal coughing is still going strong😵‍💫

Unbelievably I’ve not yet had Covid - although wondering if this is finally my turn. I don’t feel like I can put a test stick down my through without gagging and puking though.

Pickled onions!😹

I sort of get it, the vinegar must dry the throat? But the very idea of eating onions right now🤢

I’m on day 10 of this so you have my sympathy OP x

It has only just started to ease this morning - only woke myself up coughing twice last night and I sound better…. Yesterday I was absolutely convinced I needed to make a will and prepare for the worst. Tried to phone GP this morning to be on the safe side at bang on 8.30 to be told I was already 24 in the queue so am crossing my fingers I’m over the worst but I’m taking another day x

I’ve also pulled muscles down the left side of my abdomen while coughing apparently which is fun.

Wouldn’t mind but it’s my third bout of something icky in as many months….

Anyway just wanted to join in and send sympathy to fellow sufferers …..

Completely identify with this! I'm wearing sanitary towels because I've gone through so many pant/bottoms with all the "oops!" moments. I have vowed to work on my pelvic floor from now on.

I am crackling away feeling sorry for myself. What does a chest infection feel like? I've never had one but I'm finding the noise disconcerting. It's totally unproductive but my nose is runny.

You don't put test sticks down your throat any more, just up your nose. We haven't had throat swabs for nearly two years. Have you had the vaccinations? It could be Covid. There seems to be a lot of it about at the moment.
