AIBU?

To refuse to take DD to the cinema to see this film

DinosaursCanDance · 26/11/2022 16:50

Because I don’t want to see it. DD is absolutely dying to see the new Matilda the Musical film but none of her friends also want to see and she doesn’t want to go alone so she’s begging me to go with her but I don’t really want to see the film to be honest. DD is 16. I know why she really wants to see it, because years ago she played Matilda in the west end musical show.

Am I being unreasonable?

Just take her?

UpToMyElbowsInDiapers · 26/11/2022 16:52

Your 16-year-old DD WANTS to do something with you??? Do it! Run, do not walk!

Looneytune253 · 26/11/2022 16:52

Aw take her. ESP if she's got a personal connection with it, I can see why she wants to go

ClannadSinger · 26/11/2022 16:52

Yes just take her

PetraBP · 26/11/2022 16:52

Stealth boast, OP? 😉

I’d take her.

You might even enjoy it!

WimpoleHat · 26/11/2022 16:52

Oh - I’d see it as a nice opportunity to do something with her; you could go for a coffee afterwards or something?

Peridot1 · 26/11/2022 16:52

why wouldn’t you? She’s 16 and soon might not want to do things with you.

Chillyoptimistic · 26/11/2022 16:53

I’d take her. I’ve taken my ds to see loads of films I don’t want to watch. I enjoy some popcorn & a slushy and a cheeky snooze

Whyarepeoplesojudgemental · 26/11/2022 16:53

I would go. My oldest has just moved out and youngest at uni. Plenty of time soon when you’ll be happy if you see them, irrespective of what you do.

OoooohMatron · 26/11/2022 16:53

You hear so many stories of teens who don't want to spend time with their parents. Just go. At worst it's a boring 90 mins, at best you'll enjoy it.

loverofpants · 26/11/2022 16:53

Just go! At least she's asked you. If you're that desperate to not watch it, have a snooze when you're in there.

ExtraOnions · 26/11/2022 16:53

1… I think it’s odd that you wouldn’t want to go to the cinema with your DD

2… find it odder that you came on here to humble brag

Babyshadows · 26/11/2022 16:53

I'd go! You might enjoy it but even if not Sometimes it's nice to do things for your children because you know it makes them happy!

Blondlashes · 26/11/2022 16:53

You have limited time with her until she is off living her life. Take her. Spend some time together. Take an interest in her interest. They won’t be at home forever.

AllOfThemWitches · 26/11/2022 16:54

Haha my 17yo is also desperate to see it as she was also in a stage production of Matilda , I'm excited for it personally.

MrsMitford3 · 26/11/2022 16:54

Of course you should take her-how lovely that she wants to spend time with you!!!

determinedtomakethiswork · 26/11/2022 16:54

You sound a real misery! Most 16-year-olds don't want much to do with their mothers, so the fact yours wants you to do something with her is really nice

greeandorange · 26/11/2022 16:54

You have a daughter who wants to spend time with you and this is your reply?

She will be gone soon, uni, life flying the nest and you won't just spend 2 hours of your life with her.

Why not have a nice meal out and make a whole vending of it.

Hintofreality · 26/11/2022 16:54

Are you secretly seething that she only go to play Matilda on The West End and not in the film adaptation, is that why you don’t want to go?

swimmingincustard · 26/11/2022 16:54

Sounds like you've decided you're not going so I'm not sure what you want us to say?

I'd go to a film my DCs wanted to see (and have in the past). If the cost isn't a factor then why not go; you might enjoy it 🤷🏼‍♀️

KatherineJaneway · 26/11/2022 16:55

At 16 she should go by herself. Good practice for her to go out to an event on her own if no one else wants to go.

DinosaursCanDance · 26/11/2022 16:55

I’m worried it’ll be full of kids as well, the cinema I mean

Beanbagtrap · 26/11/2022 16:56

It's such a pain when this happens. My DD wanted to watch The Crown because she used to be Kate Middleton.

GoingtotheWinchester · 26/11/2022 16:56

Congratulations? I’m very confused 🤷‍♀️

DinosaursCanDance · 26/11/2022 16:56

I’ll speak to her again though now and if she still wants to go I’ll offer to go tonight
