To wonder why crinkle cut oven chips exist?

So, my online grocery shop today have given me crinkle cut oven chips as a substitute for normal nice straight cut oven chips. I don’t like crinkle cut chips, I don’t know anyone that does. They always end up half soggy.

Why do shops even sell them? Does anyone actually like them? Do people actually buy them?

I love them

Blanketpolicy · 25/11/2022 14:59

Send them to me. I'll send you the straight chips I got as a sub. 😁

Crinkle cut are so much better than straight.

Mybumlooksbig · 25/11/2022 15:01

My elderly grandad buys them...and deep fries them. Game Changer.

Suemademedoit · 25/11/2022 15:01

Crinkle cut = larger surface area with edges = more crispy bits. Straights chips are a poor substitute.

If yours end up soggy your oven prob isn’t going high enough.

Zanatdy · 25/11/2022 15:02

I prefer them

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 25/11/2022 15:02

We like crinkle cut chips. Halfway through cooking in the oven we shake and turn them.

birdling · 25/11/2022 15:04

I like them. More surface area for lots of salt and vinegar 👍

WalkingThroughTreacle · 25/11/2022 15:04

Larger surface area means they are better for dishes with a thick sauce but will tend to absorb too much moisture and go soggy if the sauce is thinner.

Whether people who prefer crinkle to straight cut (or vice versa) think about it that deeply or not is another matter.

Megapint · 25/11/2022 15:05

I love them. They get crispy bits because of the shape. If yours are soggy you're not cooking them at a high enough temp or for long enough.

Westendbuoys · 25/11/2022 15:06

I love them. I'd be delighted with that substitution.

justthecat · 25/11/2022 15:07

Love them with chip salt and gravy

NippyWoowoo · 25/11/2022 15:08

Because they're superior

InFiveMins · 25/11/2022 15:09

I've never liked crinkle cut chips but the support for them on this thread has made me think I may give them another try...Grin

fancyfrogs · 25/11/2022 15:10

I love them

skippy67 · 25/11/2022 15:11

They're much nicer than straight cut ones!

Baconand · 25/11/2022 15:11

DH insists on them. I don’t like them. We have his and hers chips in this house. I do wonder what anyone would make of our meals sometimes! We also have his and hers bread! Haha

FoxyLadyBOOtique · 25/11/2022 15:14

Crinkle cut chips and a couple of fried eggs, yes please!

Ladypuggerz · 25/11/2022 15:14

An air fryer treats a crinkle cut chip well!

Love them with chip salt and gravy

Mmm goes off to look up chip salt! Is that different to just salt?

Danni675 · 25/11/2022 15:16

Crinkle cut are the best chips. If yours are soggy, you're not cooking them long enough.

That made me laugh. I have a mental image of you - stereotypes abound and I am probably way foo!

You are from a relatively affluent Southern area
You are fairly young, born sometime in the 1990s or later
You have never made chips, your mum / nan never had a chip pan or a chip cutter.
Your total experience of chips at home has been oven chips.

I still have my nanas chip cutter. It must be about 80 years old, maybe older !

Yummy large plateful please with salt and vinegar and fresh white buttered bread for chip butties

howmanybicycles · 25/11/2022 15:19

They're the best chips! They're never soggy when I cook them. I think you must be doing something wrong.

justthecat · 25/11/2022 15:20

Chip salt is like a spicy salt, can get in Asda in the spice aisle for a bargain £1

Doyouwritecards · 25/11/2022 15:20

My dad loves crinkle cut 😁I prefer crispy fries but I definitely wouldn’t be miffed if crinkle cut was all the shop had. I bought some this week as my dad is here to babysit, quite looking forward to finishing the bag with dinner next week!
Sorry OP, YABU and have been cooking them wrong.
