England Taking The Knee

Thoughts on the team taking the knee??

I'm in no way racist, I don't care what colour someone's skin is, I have and always will judge people as people, but this really gets to me and I don't agree with the whole knee thing.

What do you think?

Yeah. And?

bakebeans · 21/11/2022 19:27

@Lunar270 very true and yet despite people taking the knee, it continues because action isn't always taken against the culprits! They are not always banned from clubs or prosecuted.

Snoozer11 · 21/11/2022 19:29

I don't understand why taking the knee is allowed but wearing an armband isn't.

It said "white lives matter".

Why-do they not?

I wish I could show all of you the smile on my son's face when I told him that the reason they were on their knees was because they want his bullies to know that it's not OK to say horrible things about his skin. Football is part of our culture. It's huge. Racism has also sadly become part of our culture and is a massive issue, particularly when it comes to football. I can't believe people are even arguing about it. It's perfectly fine to think it is a pointless gesture. If that's how you feel, then fine, but it shouldn't be 'getting to people' or upsetting people to the point that they're attacking others because of it. I really despair sometimes.

Yeah. And?

I used you and your ridiculous comment to point out to a poster who said no-one had said anything quite as ridiculous to show them that you, lonely crab, had in fact just done that.

I had to quote you as it might have proved difficult to believe that someone had been quite so foolish without ocular proof as it were.

So yeah,,,and?

AbreathofFrenchair · 21/11/2022 19:32

I should be surprised at the amount of whitewashing on this thread and the amount of white people insisting they are not racist as they dont see colour and then going on to say there is a time and place for dealing with racism and football isn't it.

Shame you can't get this angry when it comes to fighting racism and actually stop thinking you know it all.

Lonelycrab · 21/11/2022 19:32

I think you have a lot of anger deep down inside you, and you should stop posting.

MassiveSaladWithChristmasTrimmings · 21/11/2022 19:32

I certainly do think white lives matter as my children, my parents and my husband are white. So, yes white lives matter just as much as any black life. Not more, not less but the same.

I'm making a wild guess that the majority of replies on this thread are from white people who absolutely think they are the authority on racism and forms of racism.

One of the delightful replies told me I was an uptight snowflake and that she would never apologise for being white.

But it's ok, the white people have said racism isnt a problem....

So your labeling a whole group of people based on skin colour, Imagine if you replaced the word white, jesus talk about double standards. 🙄

Corruption is everywhere. This World Cup is shrouded in it. But people said the same thing about boycotting it last time in Russia.
People take back handers everywhere in life. The UK is no different. How do people get awarded contracts from government ministers? ..
Some of our cities here in the UK were built by slave labour. We also sent convicts to Australia who were used for labouring tasks.

I personally think the whole taking the knee point was made last year. Racists on Twitter are sad horrible individuals. They are vile and I’d personally like to see them go to prison or publicly named and shamed.

But footballers taking the knee for 10 seconds isn’t going to stop these racist twats.

Lunar270 · 21/11/2022 19:45

Definitely not. But if you've ever supported a friend who's being discriminated against, would you only openly support them once and then go about your usual business?

It's a losing game, fighting racists as they're never going to change. But what's the alternative? Let them get on with it and just keep quiet?

Or like sexist, do we keep trying to raise awareness and keep plugging away in hope that we make it socially unacceptable.

Nobody has said white lives don't matter though, so what the actual fuck are you on about?
Me, my husband, kids , parents and friends and family are all white too, I can see that just because people talk about black lives matter and racism doesn't mean it's automatically saying that white lives matter
It comes across very "but what about meeeeee?!" 🙄
It's not always about you ( as in people who are white)
In response to the OP, I've no problem with people taking the knee at all
It's baffling why people feel so offended about a symbol to show support against racism.
If it makes racists feel uncomfortable?
(For anyone not able to/wanting to understand that, I'll clarify - not everyone objecting to taking the knee is necessarily racist, but every racist will object to it.)
So if they're uncomfortable?
Good.
Bonus.
Racism needs calling out and should never be tolerated.

Kanye didn't put the phrase on his clothing without context. He knew the phrase has been adopted by neo Nazis and the KKK in recent years.

Hopefully once you read the link and understand that context, you'll see why it's so disingenuous for people (not you if you didn't know the recent history of the phrase) to say "well, they do matter don't they?"

Lonelycrab · 21/11/2022 19:52

But footballers taking the knee for 10 seconds

looked like 2-3 seconds from the replay.

And then all this internet bandwidth drivel taken up but apologists on this thread, who’ve devoted their evening to their grievances or intellectual blabbering.

It’s a simple, quick show of support. The fact it upsets so many, says more about them than anything.

If you worked on a football pitch, and you were subjected to the things thrown at these players, perhaps you’d have an idea.

Racism is everywhere. At the last euros I heard “fucking niggers lost it for us” from a family member.

So I think a gesture that shows support and solidarity against racism is a good thing.

You would've thought so wouldn't you. But it certainly seems to get people worked up enough to rattle their keyboards. These people aren't racists allegedly but if they aren't, they're definitely something else!

StaunchMomma · 21/11/2022 20:01

I think it's utterly irrelevant what people think about it.

If they themselves feel strongly, they should take the knee and seeing how there's been a huge rise in racist abuse at football matches in the last few years I can see why they'd want to. It must be awful to watch a colleague go through that.

And sadly they won't just have seen their colleagues experience it. They will be taking a knee for their friends, their children, their parents, and their young fans (like my son) who have also experienced racism, on and off football pitches. They're not stupid. They don't think they're going to solve racism. In fact they know they're not. Those on here who think it's pointless simply just haven't experienced what it's like to need such a show of solidarity.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 21/11/2022 20:07

IntentionalError · 21/11/2022 14:54

I understand why England are doing this, but I really wish they had chosen a different gesture than taking the knee to show their opposition to racism.

I’m a football fan & season ticket holder, and I know that taking the knee is an incredibly divisive gesture which is perceived by many ordinary fans as politicised preaching or empty, pointless virtue signalling. The act of kneeling is also perceived as one of submission, not of strength, which isn’t exactly what you want to see from your team before an important game.

How many of the 'oh, it's humiliating and grovelling' are we going to get on here?

It's not two knees down and hands on the floor. It's a position where one move and the person on one knee is able to fight. It's the strength and quiet of the starting block. It's the power of awaiting the awarding of honours, of blessings, of gathering one's thoughts for the coming storm. It's the position where the casual observer may mistake it for acquiescence or submission when the thoughts and the eyes show pure defiance.

It wasn't submission when knights would do it. It wasn't submission when superheroes would do it. It's controlled power, they're still, they're controlled and they're one push away from combat.
