England Taking The Knee

Thoughts on the team taking the knee??

I'm in no way racist, I don't care what colour someone's skin is, I have and always will judge people as people, but this really gets to me and I don't agree with the whole knee thing.

What do you think?

Eh?

I don't get triggered at all but I getting fucking annoyed when people claim not to be racist because they dont see skin colour when actually that IS part of the problem of racism.

Ignoring and not seeing my skin colour doesn't mean you are not racists it means you are choosing to ignore my skin colour to make yourself feel better. Instead you are whitewashing my heritage and expecting me to be ok with that.

So take the patronising stick out of your arse, dickhead.

@AbreathofFrenchair I see you❤️

Why would you apologise for being white? You get so much privilege you aren't even aware of it. And unfortunately you come across as racist on every single one of your post as well as woefully uneducated and ignorant.

Embarrassing.

This is such a lazy argument.

The 11 guys on the pitch had no say in where the World cup is being held. None.

If 1, 2 or 10 players selected refused to play then someone else would be there.

Sure, if you were in the same position you can say that you would refuse to take the knee. You can say that the gesture is misguided or whatever but the fact is, England was always going to send a team so you can either make small gestures or you do nothing.

And, as has already been pointed out, the take a knee movement has contributed to positive change.

It’s for the benefit of the people doing the gesture. No one else. I argue it’s done more harm than good and it’s an empty meaningless gesture. Doing it on the arena where so many brown people died building it is grotesque.

On what basis, exactly, would you argue that "it's done more harm than good?"

@Terven I’d be interested in knowing what harm taking the knee has caused. Also please have some respect for people that died building the Stadia. They are not just ‘brown people’. They have specific nationalities and identities. It would be nice for you to use them.

And there's you, claiming to not be racist.

All you've done with this ridiculous statement is further showcase the disgusting streak that runs right through you.

What a sad little racist life you lead.

What is it about a symbolic act against racism that upsets someone who is "in no way racist".

Just asking.

This.

Sadly, that's how white people view things. White and everyone else is brown/foreign.

Why would they take time to learn different nationalities or cultures when they continually say they are not racist because they don't see colour?!

Don't personally have a strong opinion on taking the knee or not, but I do think people should be aware of why someone might take issue with it other than just being a racist (although not mutually exclusive)

Taking the knee is associated with a particular movement, namely Black Lives Matter, who have become controversial for a variety of reasons not least their questionable use of money (that was donated in good faith to help causes affecting black Americans) for personal gain. This is fairly easy to research if anyone cares to. Many feel that the act of taking the knee implies support for that specific organisation and that is what they object to.
One can believe that black lives matter without supporting Black Lives Matter.
Of course I don't doubt there are a lot of people who are completely unaware of that and still don't like it but even so I'd argue it's intellectually dishonest to suggest that someone could only object it they're racist.

You’re right. BLM the movement is controversial. Taking the knee also is. Discussions about those should be carried out in a respectful way.

on this thread, it’s not a discussion about the controversies and nuances, it’s racism.

They mean they are racist but are too scared to come put and say it so are dropping lots of racist hints instead so people work it out.

I know. I am just genuinely intrigued to hear the rationale for this post.

twelly · 21/11/2022 18:23

I don't think a political statement should have been made - this is because once you allow a political statement to be made you then in my view have to treat all political statements similarly.

I totally abhor racism, but this is a football tournament. What happens in the case of other minorities - either you allow all political expressions or none. I know some people may say well allow all political/social points of view - but if that were the case within the stadium you could have people making the case for whatever they felt to be important

You do know there is racism in football too? Just a few weeks ago there were arrests because football fans where chanting racist abuse at players? Why shouldn't they take the knee to address racism?

Or do you think enough has been done to deal with it and it's no longer a problem?

MassiveSaladWithChristmasTrimmings · 21/11/2022 18:36

It makes the feel better, the daft twats. It doesn't make an iota of difference to most of the world and nor should it.

To see them all genuflecting is laughable: maybe they should go the whole hog and lay face down prostrate in the shite while yelling, Mea Culpa.

twelly · 21/11/2022 18:38

@AbreathofFrenchair
Yes, I am aware there is racism in football just as there is racism in many areas of life. My point is that you either allow all political/pressure group displays or none.

As stated several times, the England football team has repeatedly stated that they are protesting against ALL forms of discrimination.

Pleasepleasepleaseno · 21/11/2022 18:41

Well I haven't rtft but I'm sure I'm not the first to say the only thing I hate about it is the expression taking THE knee? Why not A knee? It's because of Game of Thrones isn't it? It drives me nuts

But racism is happening within football so why cant they address it? The same as they wear love for all armbands?

Where do you think is acceptable to talk and take action about racism and racism in football?

I'm also taking a wild guess you've never been on the receiving end of racism? Only because your coming across like it makes you uncomfortable and want it moved out of sight....

One of the best things about this protest is that it has let us know who the vile racists are. Anyone who calls someone supporting an anti-discrimination movement a 'daft twat' is bereft of morals.
