To not understand the hype with oodies?

Anyone else? I just don’t get their popularity.

A dressing gown, or any other hooded blanket will do the job of keeping you warm. Costs a lot less too.

Am I missing something here?

Have some respect OP

Oodies and their knock offs are keeping millions up and down the country warm without turning on their extortionate heating. They are so thick, fluffy and warm and are comfortable and designed for wearing around the house not just for when you’re out the shower like a dressing gown. They have proper sleeves so you can keep all parts of your arms warm whilst doing any activity unlike a hooded blanket where you have to stick them out the sides.

Have respect for an oodie? Are you for real?

This competitive cost of living piety is getting ridiculous now.

Personally, I find being 'properly' dressed is good for my mental health, and makes me feel good. I'd only wear a dressing gown around the house if I was ill.

I therefore prefer to wear cosy thermal loungewear / casual wear that is still 'proper' clothing, rather than something that's equivalent to a dressing gown.

I don't think I'm unique in this - not dressing yourself can be an indicator for depression. (I'm not saying Oody wearers are depressed, just that plenty of people feel better when they are properly dressed.)

But I am 'properly dressed'? Throwing the Oodie on over the top of everything else if I get a bit chilly working from home does not suddenly mean I'm not properly dressed. I really think people are overthinking this - some people find them a better solution than a dressing gown or thermal layers, some people don't.

housemaus · 18/11/2022 10:12

Fair enough OP - hourses for courses and all that. I'm not a fan of a dressing gown because if I tie it super tight so it doesn't slip open or have gaps then it's uncomfortable to sit it and restrictive.

I love my Oodie/giant hoodies though - I actually have two. One official, and is super thick and lined, goes down to my knees. The other is a thinner Primark version (£14 I think) which is fine for a bit of warmth but doesn't keep me as toasty and I tend to wear earlier in autumn. The real one is undoubtedly better, although I've seen some great similar ones which are much cheaper. Mine was a present - I wouldn't have paid as much for one myself.

It's meant I've not needed the heating on yet, which is a godsend! I make a hot water bottle and put it in the pouch :)

Fairislefandango · 18/11/2022 10:14

These are not people who cook. Very much a “bag of Doritos dinner” outfit

Again with the snide judginess, conflating wearing an Oodie with slobbing around with snack food instead of cooking a proper meal.

Nope. I could cook wearing my Oodie, but I tend to take it off, because I tend to be warmer when cooking, and because I don't want to get it dirty and have too wash it too often.

The time I wear it most is when I'm sitting still for long periods (usually when marking or preparing lessons) because my circulation is crap and I get really cold if I sit still too long. I am no slob, and I don't hang around the house in pyjamas etc. I'm properly dressed, but with an Oodie on top if I need it.

Horses for courses, but for me, "properly dressed" means I'm wearing something I'd be prepared to pop to the shops in. Which an Oodie isn't.

I don't have anything against those who like them, they're just not for me.

username8888 · 18/11/2022 11:42

It's not hype, they are lovely and warm.

lovelilies · 19/11/2022 09:20

Use the code GETOODIE for 25% off a single Oodie

I've just ordered me and DD one after reading this thread Grin

Fordian · 20/11/2022 20:11

There's a Ph.D thesis writing itself in all these replies! And I mean it!

The opposite views; the justifications. The MH solutions/weighted blanket effect; the 'keeping up appearances'. The fear of setting fire to oneself while microwaving a pot-noodle (😂). The 'I'm hot as hell/DD loves hers (menopausal heat!))'. The 'can't respect/fancy my partner in one'. etc.

Fascinating.

I'm typing this wearing my £14 Primarni 'Oodie'. Love it. Lightweight. Cuffs. Knee-length. Nothing underneath (top half!) 😂; tracky trousers and warm slippers bottom half.

Works for me. But not for everyone. Evidently. 😂

They are hideous monstrosities.

How do you feel about Crocs? 🤔😂

Great for going out into the garden or emptying the bins if you are the type to not wear outdoor shoes inside the house. Though get the cheaper versions for that not crocs.

StoneofDestiny · 27/11/2022 18:31

I think they look ridiculous and wouldn't think of answering the door in one 😂. I thought they were a kids thing. I don't get why they are so wide and short. What about the legs? I can see they would keep people warm - but so would thermal sweatpants and a thermal t-shirt under a warm fleece - at least that would look normal.

Sparklingbrook · 27/11/2022 18:43

I have a fake one but have never worn it, got it one Christmas. It looks like the sort of thing that might be good for lying on the sofa when you’re ill.

As for them not looking great (and let’s face it they don’t) it doesn’t matter because nobody on MN ever answers their door anyway. So no danger of anyone outside the household seeing it. 😂

notnowB · 27/11/2022 18:44

My Oodie is one of the best things I have ever bought in my life.
I have had the knock-off versions and nothing else compares.

RatSlave · 27/11/2022 18:47

Pretty sure it's not my job to look pretty in case someone sees me. Imagine having so much internalised misogyny that you think you and everyone around you needs to be good looking at all times.

I don’t have an Oodie or a knock off as I find them hot and stifling in my overly insulated home, but I agree, I don’t get the angst about how they look. The biggest argument seem to be they are wide, and therefore disguise a woman’s shape. Who cares?!

They disguise everyone’s shape, male or female.

LindorDoubleChoc · 27/11/2022 18:55

My oodie makes it possible for me to wfh without the heating on. A normal towelling dressing gown definitely doesn't cut it.

Sparklingbrook · 27/11/2022 18:52

But there isn’t this angst about men wearing them and how wide they look on men.

WimbyAce · 27/11/2022 18:58

I have got a cheapish one and it's great. Is brilliant for working from home or in the evenings. I wouldn't feel the same in a dressing gown.Is big so can chuck it on over other clothes.

Fairislefandango · 27/11/2022 19:06

Yes but if you're properly dressed with an oodie on top, you take the oodie off (and probably put a coat on) to go to the shops! If I wear an apron to cook in (which I'd take off to go to the shops Grin), would that mean I wasn't properly dressed, assuming I'm wearing my normal outfit underneath?

Sparklingbrook · 27/11/2022 19:06

cookiesbeforepookies · 27/11/2022 18:56

I just think they don’t look great on anyone but it seems they have their uses.

A PP mentioned Crocs which are much the same. Look horrible but handy for a trip to the bin or compost heap.

LindorDoubleChoc · 27/11/2022 19:15

Of course they don't look great on anyone! Dressing gowns don't look great on anyone. Thermal underwear doesn't look great on anyone. Crocs don't look great on anyone. Beige bras don't look great on anyone.

They aren't designed for going out in!

LindorDoubleChoc · 27/11/2022 19:17

I'm properly dressed under my oodie during the day. If I was excessively uptight I would take the oodie off if I had to answer the door ... but luckily I'm not.

DashboardConfessional · 27/11/2022 19:19

I'm genuinely laughing that people think Oodie owners are wearing them as an XXXXXXL sweatshirt addition to a trendy outfit.

Sparklingbrook · 27/11/2022 19:23

They aren't designed for going out in!

Neither are pyjamas but that doesn't stop anyone. Grin
