To think I wasn’t rude to colleague?

Our office day is today and this was the first time she’d been in since solo travelling around India.

I asked how it went, did she enjoy it. Then I said did you get lonely?

She pretty much snapped back that you wouldn’t ask a couple if they’d argued whilst on holiday so why am I jumping to the negative

I apologised but felt very awkward tension afterwards

She was rude , I'd see it as an opening to tell you about who I'd met etc. So many posters on here who just want to see offense, unbelievable

I could be friendly with someone at work that I have only said hi to every morning and still ask about their holiday because it would be of interest (love to travel) but asking them if they were lonely on their holiday to me is a personal question.

And I would see it as an opening to ask “why would I be lonely?”

That probably would have made things just as awkward to some as what her colleague said.

It sounds like a smug married type of comment

With respect, you need to get out more. Bullet points?!

And you posted five times in a row. Not sure it's HER that needs to get out more.

Especially ironic and she clearly gets out a LOT.

From her POV it imbedded that the first thing people thought of about her experience - which to her could have been exciting, interesting, educational, thought-provoking, scary....was a negative. That the fact she went alone was more relevant than anything else about the trip. That nothing else stood out - not the travel time, the culture, the food, the weather, religion, as the fact she went alone.

^ sums it up perfectly. How dull and a bit pathetic that the first thing people want to know is why you went on your own. To India!! Land of incredible was that she could probably enthuse about endlessly but won't now.

I’ve never solo travelled because I guess I’d be worried about being lonely.

That's your problem, not your colleague's, @hellohelloisityou

And actually, I tend privately to despise people who say they "can't" be single or do things on their own. But I would never tell them that, or ask them why they're so pathetic, as to always need someone else with them. THat would be really rude.

RunLolaRun102 · 03/01/2023 15:15

She was incredibly rude. I know colleagues who snap like that around people they view as ‘not worth’ networking with. Has she reacted like that before with anything you said? I bet the bitch wouldn’t have snapped like that had a senior manager asked her
