Went on a first date with a guy I met online last night, went out for dinner. When I got there I definitely found him attractive. However when it came to ordering drinks he ordered himself a glass of milk.

I've honestly never came across someone doing that in a restaurant and I just think it's really odd and really put me off him. I have tried to work out why this was such a turn off and I can't come up with a reason it just made me feel a bit yuck.

AIBU? It's just so odd on a first date I feel.

Maybe he'd just come from the gym and been doing weights, my son frequently drinks milk with his dinner after this. Something to do with protein🤷 (no idea if he'd do it on a date as obviously never been on one with him.......... Now that would be weird😂)

2nd date he will be asking for "bitty"Envy

😂

PollyAmour · 16/11/2022 14:45

I had a date once where the man drank cider and coca-cola in the same glass. Now that was weird.

Milk just seems to be a bit childish. I would be half expecting him to ask for turkey dinosaurs and smiley faces for his main course.

Why is milk childish though? I'm so confused

Hobbesmanc · 16/11/2022 14:47

I bet it's some post gym thing. Did he add any weird protein powder lol

I've a friend who has red wine and coke. Apparently it's a popular combo in Spain.

AryaStarkWolf · 16/11/2022 14:47

I mean honestly if a guy drinking milk is a turn off for you OP, I think the guy had a lucky escape!

oneofthegrayfolk · 16/11/2022 14:50

I have actually done this once. I was absolutely starving and light-headed from it and just needed some sustenance inside me straight away. So I ordered milk so that I did not keel over before the starter arrived.

The drug or the drink?

Is in South Africa too. Each to their own 😂

bringincrazyback · 16/11/2022 14:53

If you liked him apart from this, I'd work on dismissing the ick. It seems a shame to put the brakes on just for this. I'd have found it weird too, but we all have our quirks and it'd be boring if we were all the same.

StrangerOnline · 16/11/2022 14:54

I’d like him even more for having the confidence to ask for what he really wanted to drink, despite it being unusual. It’s a healthy option and proves he’s not easily embarrassed (and so he shouldn’t be).

Fair enough if it put you off though OP - we’re all different. Will you see him again?

bringincrazyback · 16/11/2022 14:55

I agree with this too, come to think of it.

hugefanofcheese · 16/11/2022 15:00

Quite possibly a gym thing, didn't think of that!

Because it is literally food for babies, that's why it exists.

SunshineLoving · 16/11/2022 15:05

Haha I would be turned off too. The ordering of the milk, the milk sat there on the table and then the possibility that he might end up with a milk moustache.

I would try and dismiss the ick though if everything else was good.

So you don't eat cheese or butter or yogurt then the because it's made from food for babies? It's a drink and it exists and makes Dairy products that we all eat (or most of us do anyway) so what is the issue with someone liking and drinking it. This place is batshit sometimes

@CustardySergeant wine ruins the taste of food and food ruins the taste of wine, IMO

Totally agree! I like wine, I like food, but I prefer not to drink wine while eating. That probably makes me undateable according to this thread 😂

Magentax · 16/11/2022 15:10

Maybe he’s doing GOMAD

Drinking milk isn't childish. Ordering milk in a restaurant in the evening when it is not even on the menu is childish. In my experience adults act and dress in a certain way on a first date.

It does remind me of Homelander in The Boys though and he really turns my stomach.

Nobody is saying you or OP’s date can’t drink what you want. It’s a free world. But, in that same vein of freedom, people are allowed to find things you do to be unattractive. Anything at all - your shoes, your haircut, the way you hold a knife, the food you order - people can go ‘nope, don’t fancy that’ and not date you. That’s their right and they don’t need any justification at all.

You seem extremely offended by this.

I'm not offended I don't even like milk, I just find it completely bizarre that this would be something someone would consider a turn of is all, a drink someone orders 😂

BobbyBobbyBobby · 16/11/2022 15:22

Why would you not just ask him?

’That’s an unusual choice for a drink, are you in training?’

DarkShade · 16/11/2022 15:26

@AryaStarkWolf Your reaction is exactly how I feel. Why would you mind? Yeah, kids like milk. So what! Unless the OP was worried that her date was actually five toddlers in a trenchcoat?

It does show that you are not into him though OP. In my experience when you really like someone the weird things they do are just interesting or cute quirks that confirm how different and wonderful the person is. When you don't really like the person, you also don't like their quirks.

Saying things like I mean honestly if a guy drinking milk is a turn off for you OP, I think the guy had a lucky escape! certainly makes it sound like you’re offended.

I’m sure you have turn offs that other people would consider odd. If she’s not into guys who order milk at dinner, then she’s just not. It’s not a value judgement on either of them. 🤷🏽‍♀️
