Went on a first date with a guy I met online last night, went out for dinner. When I got there I definitely found him attractive. However when it came to ordering drinks he ordered himself a glass of milk.

I've honestly never came across someone doing that in a restaurant and I just think it's really odd and really put me off him. I have tried to work out why this was such a turn off and I can't come up with a reason it just made me feel a bit yuck.

AIBU? It's just so odd on a first date I feel.

If that is the level of pickyness people have all I can say is best of luck with internet dating.

Pinkcadillac · 16/11/2022 14:05

At least he moved on to water... was he a runner? I've heard that a glass of milk have the perfect % of carb/protein for after a run (I don't run myself)....

gogohmm · 16/11/2022 14:06

Unusual but not a red flag. Dp orders milkshake at any opportunity, not that different really

FlowerArranger · 16/11/2022 14:07

Is the fact that he drank milk with his dinner on a first date his defining characteristic,@teslaplayer , or does he have any other features that impressed you - positively or negatively?

Personally I would have just asked him, in a casual or joking rather than "this is so odd!!" kind of way. But maybe he expected you to ask........ maybe it was some kind of weird test to see your reaction...

girlmom21 · 16/11/2022 14:08

@CustardySergeant wine ruins the taste of food and food ruins the taste of wine, IMO

Itchintobestitchin · 16/11/2022 14:10

My father always ordered milk with a meal. A pint, full cream, served cold. It was never on the menu, but also never an issue for the waiting staff. He didn't like beer, wine or sodas but he did like milk.

I don't think ordering milk is as weird as judging someone for doing so.

I am aghast at this sentence.

I am aghast at this sentence.

Me too I'm afraid. But as not as aghast as my sommelier cousin would be 😂

rosyroses · 16/11/2022 14:12

How old was he op?

My parents would have a glass of milk with their evening meal. As kids we would have been given one too before discovering the delights of orange squash 😂

It could just be something he has grown up with.

I don't recall ever seeing a glass of milk as an option on a menu

Musti · 16/11/2022 14:13

If he likes milk then what’s the issue? I’d rather he was confident enough to order what he wants rather than stick to senseless norms.

I don’t like milk except for soy in my coffee, but don’t have a problem with whatever people drink. I don’t like whisky, or j20, or Guinness or vodka. But in your eyes it would have been better for him to order one of those drinks?

Anyway, if I had been on a date with you and found out that you are shallow and a sheep the. I wouldn’t want a second date with you.

Agapornis · 16/11/2022 14:13

What's with the "dutch people drink milk during dinner in a restaurant" people?! @SallyWD @TheArtfulStodger @WorkingItOutAsIGo @Mindthegap725 Over lunch, sure; dinner at home, maybe; but certainly NOT during an evening meal out! (Unless it's a northern Netherlands thing?! Definitely not in the south)

NotMyselfWithoutCoffee · 16/11/2022 14:13

I think it's a bit unusual but wouldn't be a complete write off for me, depends on his personality and if we got on/other characteristics.
Maybe he had a calcium deficiency, low spice tolerance (cajun chicken), heartburn or maybe he just likes milk?
If it bothered me that much I would have just asked.

DesertIslandCondiment · 16/11/2022 14:13

AryaStarkWolf · 16/11/2022 14:01

Why do people need to give a reason for ordering milk though? It's a drink, maybe he just likes it, this is such a weird thread 😂

Milk just seems to be a bit childish. I would be half expecting him to ask for turkey dinosaurs and smiley faces for his main course.

54isanopendoor · 16/11/2022 14:14

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 16/11/2022 11:20

If he was Dutch, totally normal. Otherwise a sign of independence and knowing his own mind?

Yes.
My Ds is 18. He will usually ask for a tall cold glass of milk if we're out, & I expect he would on a date. He's also intelligent, funny, kind & good looking. I wouldn't judge someone on what they order to drink. Drinking too much booze, yes.
Being rude to the waiting staff, yes. The actual drink, no.

But, if it puts you off then it puts you off.

We need a 'Like' button! 🤣

SunshineAndFizz · 16/11/2022 14:17

Where was your date? The school canteen or school yard? I

MyTabbyCats · 16/11/2022 14:24

My children once asked for milk with dinner at my sisters house. She commented on what an odd choice that was. I just think that drinking milk has become less commonplace than it once was because there’s so many alternative and more exciting choices nowadays. But milk is good, hydrating and simple. It wouldn’t put me off seeing him for a second date.

Melonapplepear · 16/11/2022 14:24

The people talking priories bla bla bla this was a FIRST date! Not like they're even in a relationship they met once. Lots of things out people off and I doubt men are any different. I would personally rather remain single as I have been for years than overlook potentially annoying things, granted drinking milk seems minor but you know what you like. Point I'm making here is my tolerance to things is pretty low and I don't think you can come back from getting the ick.

ToastAndJames · 16/11/2022 14:26

This would be fairly normal for my Dutch colleagues (Amsterdam-based). They also drink glasses of milk in meetings at work.

ILoveXmasChocsInNov · 16/11/2022 14:26

It's uncommon but I guess there's nothing wrong with it. Maybe he wanted the milk to line his stomach if he was going to eat something spicy or maybe he was starving and any food would have taken a while to arrive.

Perhaps I am biased though because my own son loves milk. He has a cup in the morning, one before going to bed and sometimes even one as a midnight snack. (In his defense...he is only a year old so has some time to become a bit more cool!!)

hugefanofcheese · 16/11/2022 14:26

It's unusual sure but only because I'm not used to ordering milk or drinking it with meals. Some people presumably are, no harm. Maybe it's because neither of you were drinking and that's his preferred idea of a soft drink rather than coke or water?

Merryhobnobs · 16/11/2022 14:27

In Northern Ireland this is really common. Took me by surprise first time I visited with my now husband.

girlmom21 · 16/11/2022 14:27

Me too I'm afraid. But as not as aghast as my sommelier cousin would be 😂

I'm happy to admit I am entirely uncultured Grin

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 16/11/2022 14:29

Perhaps it was a test to see how you'd react and if you'd ask him about it. It's not just you deciding whether you want a second date, is it? he will be as well.

Comedycook · 16/11/2022 14:31

My kids are 12/14 and always drink milk with their meals.
