Went on a first date with a guy I met online last night, went out for dinner. When I got there I definitely found him attractive. However when it came to ordering drinks he ordered himself a glass of milk.

I've honestly never came across someone doing that in a restaurant and I just think it's really odd and really put me off him. I have tried to work out why this was such a turn off and I can't come up with a reason it just made me feel a bit yuck.

AIBU? It's just so odd on a first date I feel.

@AryaStarkWolf Your reaction is exactly how I feel. Why would you mind? Yeah, kids like milk. So what! Unless the OP was worried that her date was actually five toddlers in a trenchcoat?

It does show that you are not into him though OP. In my experience when you really like someone the weird things they do are just interesting or cute quirks that confirm how different and wonderful the person is. When you don't really like the person, you also don't like their quirks.

Thank you! I'm not alone :p

Shaaameless · 16/11/2022 15:37

Perhaps he didn’t like you, so he ordered the milk to make sure that he never saw you again.

Saying things like I mean honestly if a guy drinking milk is a turn off for you OP, I think the guy had a lucky escape! certainly makes it sound like you’re offended.

I’m sure you have turn offs that other people would consider odd. If she’s not into guys who order milk at dinner, then she’s just not. It’s not a value judgement on either of them. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Why does it make me sound offended? I can assure you I'm not, as I've said I'm not even a milk drinker but if I went on a date with a guy and he decided he didn't like me because I ordered a milkshake for example, I'd be glad I'd found out on the first date how shallow he was 💁

You don’t get how calling people ‘shallow’ because you don’t agree with their dating criteria makes you sound offended? Okay, then. Carry on. 😂

purplemama1990 · 16/11/2022 15:44

It's a bit strange, but not really off putting to be honest. At least he wasn't trying to hide his true self and pretend to be something he's not?

Not really, no. Thinking someone is shallow doesn't mean you're personally offended by them, what a weird conversation this whole thing is ......

I didn’t say ‘personally’ offended. I said offended. I’m now suspecting you don’t know what the word means. Would you have been less befuddled if I’d said ‘displeased’?

OP gets to have random dating criteria and there’s nothing wrong with that. If you think there is, you’re the one with the issue. I cannot parse it any further and talking to you is a bit dispiriting, so I shall stop. And I agree, it’s a very weird conversation indeed.

This made me laugh so much

Even more reason to bin him off Grin

Oooh, God! I remember when I was dating and there were all the guys who had no hobbies or interests whatsoever outside ‘going to the gym’. I bet they drank lots of milk! 😂

This is true, but other people are allowed to find those criteria bizarre, shallow, judgemental, or anything else. The OP is allowed not to have a second date with someone for any reason. But others are allowed to think that her reason is objectively ridiculous.

Has The Milky Bar Kid started dating?

And other posters are allowed to think they’re ridiculous for judging her dating criteria. Ad infinitum.

There’s nothing ‘objective’ about attraction or personal preference.

As opposed to polite people like you, who insult the OP. Indeed. 😂

eggandonion · 16/11/2022 16:05

We are often out and about all over Ireland, and have dinner in hotels. Lots of men have milk with their dinner and people in supermarkets buy huge amounts.
At weddings in Northern Ireland there is usually a jug of watery orange on every table, Im sure nobody would care if someone asked for a glass of milk.

crackersforcrackers · 16/11/2022 16:06

It's a bit weird but wouldn't bother me. If that's the worst of it then you're lucky Grin

DWMoosmum · 16/11/2022 16:06

It's not the norm but what's the issue? It's a glass of milk!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 16/11/2022 16:08

Isn't it a prelude to belching the alphabet, as sort of party trick?

I'm sure I saw that in 'Malcolm in the Middle' as a way of impressing a baby sitter.

I mean the OP literally started a thread asking for those opinions, you seem to think only those who agree she's reasonable can post here.

This is interesting. My husband is from Derry, I spend a lot of time in NI (and I’ve been to a few weddings) and I’ve never encountered this at all!

You can think she’s unreasonable and not be rude about it. If you choose to be rude, then complaining about how ‘stuck up and rude’ this place is indicates rather limited self awareness.

DesertIslandCondiment · 16/11/2022 16:16

I find it weird he asked for something that is not on the menu. How did they know how much to charge? I've just looked at our local restaurant's menu and milk is not an option even on the breakfast menu.

I'm nipping tonight and I really want to ask them for some milk to see what they say to me. I know them quite well so I can guess.

Years ago, I worked with a really nice man who had problems with his stomach. He was often to be seen with a glass of milk before and with a meal or taking Gaviscon. He made someone a lovely husband and father. They met at work after he moved on elsewhere, so his equally nice wife was already aware of his milk-drinking before they first dated.

This is exactly something I could have seen him doing on a date.
