Went on a first date with a guy I met online last night, went out for dinner. When I got there I definitely found him attractive. However when it came to ordering drinks he ordered himself a glass of milk.

I've honestly never came across someone doing that in a restaurant and I just think it's really odd and really put me off him. I have tried to work out why this was such a turn off and I can't come up with a reason it just made me feel a bit yuck.

AIBU? It's just so odd on a first date I feel.

Does he suffer with heartburn? I’ve definitely been tempted to order milk before because fizzy drinks don’t always go down that well. I wouldn’t though, because I’d think it weird.

My kids only drink milk at home… 15 and 4!

Evan456 · 17/11/2022 20:08

Why didn’t you ask him?

cavalier · 17/11/2022 20:17

That is strange for sure

HarryBlaster · 17/11/2022 20:25

If my husband’s not drinking lager then he’s mostly drinking milk. And by the pint 🤷🏼‍♀️ Still an odd choice on a date though 🤔

BarnabyRocks · 17/11/2022 20:50

This has made me lol so hard!
Was it Napoleon Dynamite??

HikingforScenery · 17/11/2022 20:55

I’d find it a little unusual but it’s better than ordering coke, which is a good toilet cleaner. Or some stinky beer or strong alcohol…

Beepbeepenergy · 17/11/2022 21:01

I know loads of people who like to have a glass of milk with there tea
my partner
my mums partner

people like a cup of tea with their food too is that weird also ?

Lyver · 17/11/2022 21:12

TheArtfulStodger · 16/11/2022 11:17

Is he Dutch? It's not abnormal.

not sure he is, but I am and I also think it's a bit unusual.. Not sure what being dutch have to do with this...

Toooldforthisshit49 · 17/11/2022 21:21

We're you at an Indian restaurant? My DH always orders milk with his curry 😊

Mrssophie · 17/11/2022 21:28

@Curryinnohurry yes I was watching that too...I just knew it would be from a mn thread! 😅

Oysterbabe · 17/11/2022 21:30

people like a cup of tea with their food too is that weird also ?

Yes. Unless it's a fry up.

Because it is literally food for babies, that's why it exists.

It's literally food for calves. It's become associated as food for babies but technically it's animal food, not human food.

riceuten · 17/11/2022 21:32

Obviously your choice, but if this was me, it would be of zero consequence. I often have a lassi with an Indian meal

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 17/11/2022 21:33

I didnt even know if restaurants served milk?! Weird

Bunchymcbunchface · 17/11/2022 21:37

It’d give me the ick

chuichi · 17/11/2022 21:40

Ordering milk on a date is certainly weird, and even more so on a first date! However I don't view it negatively, it might be for health reasons? Or he just simply loves milk! I'd like to know what other quirky things he got up his sleeves 😝

Someone else mentioned milkshake, which I guess nobody would find weird... and milk is very similar in a way 🙃

CyclingMumKent · 17/11/2022 21:40

I have some grown up weightlifter friends who have milk with dinnerafter a work out due to its high protein content which they need for muscles mass

Ponoka7 · 17/11/2022 21:47

A man I briefly dated always ordered milk or water. He was constantly in training. His body was amazing, so I was prepared to overlook it. He had a gym in his equally amazing house. He then got arrested for guns, money laundering etc. So OP, if he's from Merseyside, swerve him.

Blueink · 17/11/2022 21:55

He had a glass a milk when he arrived/before a spicy meal, but then switched to water. This wouldn’t bother me. Possibly he came from the gym or it was to help with the spicy food. Why didn’t you ask? Suspect you were less in to him than you suggest in your OP.

Foxglovesandlilacs86 · 17/11/2022 22:03

That is weird but what did he say when you asked him why he was drinking milk?

Designerly · 17/11/2022 22:12

Seems to me that all of the people saying it is 'weird' must be socially programmed types, lacking in free open minded thinking. Dare I say, loosen up 'sheeple'.

Honeyandlemonnn · 17/11/2022 22:13

i used to drink milk alot when i had heartburn or acid reflux and it helped.

Specific · 17/11/2022 22:18

We can't always help the things that 'give us the ick'...

But if you were to disregard him based on this alone
finding a partner might prove difficult for you ( think of the guy in Shallow hal hyperfocusing on the longer toe)
There are soooo many variables in another person.
I highly doubt drinking milk is one of his core values or representative of any underlying emotional deficiencies or anything sinister.

Perfectly fine to be turned off.
We are all inevitable going to be turned off by one thing or another at some stage in a partner.
To try and find someone PERFECT with 0 gross tendencies or bad habits would be a futile effort.

If you like him otherwise you could raise it with him - that way you can have a conversation and how he communicates should be more insightful than any assumptions you've made about his milk-drinking.

Personally I'd take a milk drinker over a diet Coke drinker any day.

Hope it works out for you!
And if not, may the next man drink the sexiest manliest most unremarkable beverage ever ;-)

Most of us have evolved so that we can digest cows milk because we’ve done so for many years.

Dreamsoffreedomjoyandpeace · 17/11/2022 22:26

So drinking milk is either ick or it is socially acceptable only under certain circumstances?

And most of you think the man is weird…..

Milk is nutritious, cheap, relatively low in sugar and delicious….I drink it every day.
