To think the Prince of Wales is being inappropriate and tone deaf to be so vocally supportive of England

At the World Cup. “The whole country is behind you”. Is it too much to ask that as Prince of Wales he supports Wales at their first ever World Cup?

He must be aware that a significant proportion of the people of Wales are a bit miffed at the speed with which he was given the title. Just goes to show the bubble he’s in.

And could you point me to where he speaks in his capacity as Prince of Wales? His constitutional role, not a voluntary fun one?

Personally I don’t think his position as Prince of Wales would be magically made OK if he made a comment about supporting the Welsh football team (particularly in light of the fact that said football team is playing in a country that has a history of human rights abuses).

And, if I did think the Prince of Wales position was appropriate, I’d probably be more inclined to hope that the duties included things a damn sight more important than a quick “yay Wales football team!”

You’re right that his position as FA head is a voluntary fun one, therefore literally his only job there is waving Pom poms.

William is also Patron of Welsh Rugby Union and once joked about how his support for Wales against England would lead to a row with his brother, who was then Patron of English Rugby Union.

Were posters above offended that he was supporting one British team against another, even though, according to them, he should represent the entire United Kingdom?

You’re absolutely right, he does support Wales in rugby. There was these pictures at the time.

Other pic didn’t attached for some reason.
Seems to me he takes seriously both roles, and is passionate about both.
Don’t see what’s wrong with that really 🤷‍♀️

Terrible, isn't it?

I mean, according to posters above, William should be supporting the entire United Kingdom, not playing favourites with one particular country.

Shouldn't he?

jcyclops · 17/11/2022 20:49

William is heir to the throne of 4 countries at the World Cup. Why restrict the argument to just England and Wales?

Perhaps because neither Scotland nor Northern Ireland have qualified for this World Cup?

Mañanarama · 17/11/2022 20:58

Honestly, just make them the Prince & Princess of England, then Wales will have nothing to get offended about. Or will they?

Australia and Canada have though.

Well, to use an appropriately football themed analogy, that is some shifting of goalposts!

From Wales all the way to Australia!

Yes it is, but it was started by the PP who posted this:
"William is heir to the throne of 4 countries at the World Cup. Why restrict the argument to just England and Wales?"

The 2 additional countries they were talking about were Canada and Australia, not Scotland and NI.

Why would English people support Wales when England is still in the same competition?
Because not bothering to take any notice of Wales unless England are knocked out of the tournament before them seems rather like jumping on bandwagon. Fair enough support England over Wales if they're playing each other or if they're competing to qualify from their group and only one can, but otherwise either support both for the whole

Why would I, as an English person support Wales?!
I wouldn’t. I don’t.

And I won’t take any notice of England is knocked out either.

In fact I recall the outrage from Welsh fans many years ago, when Wales did well, proclaiming that it wasn’t in for England fans to suddenly support Wales!

People want it both ways.

Quincythequince · 17/11/2022 23:28

If you don't support Wales at all, and also take no notice of them once England are knocked out, then my comment absolutely wasn't aimed at you. I don't at all expect you to support Wales as an English person.

However the person I was replying to asked why would they support Wales when England were still in the same tournament, suggesting that once Wales were out they would then would begin to support Wales. It's the suddenly support Wales that's the problem. Either support them from the start (which I assume most England fans won't) then continue to support them if England go out first, or don't support them at any point.

I don't want it both ways, I don't think England fans are obliged to support Wales at all and am perfectly happy for them not to. But if they do want to support Wales, do it from the start.

I guarantee if he'd said he was supporting Wales then the Welsh would still be pissy about it

"What's he ever done for us, he can fuck back off and support England" type things no doubt 😂

Absolutely this.

Really , shouldn't he be supporting Germany 😕?

Why would he support Germany? Do tell.

GlacindaTheTroll · 18/11/2022 14:30

Why would he support Germany? Do tell

Darling: I'm as British as Queen Victoria!!
Blackadder: So your father's German, you're half-German and you married a German!

Blackadder: So your father's German, you're half-German and you married a German!

His mother was British, his grandfather was Greek and Danish, his great-grandmother was British, you have to go all the way back to Queen Mary before you find a half-German ancestor.

Calling someone German because of an ancestor a hundred years ago is as absurd as saying that black players shouldn't play for England.

spanieleyes · 19/11/2022 15:09

I would support England, because I'm English. When they get knocked out, I would support Wales because they're a home country, when they get knocked out, I would support Belgium because I had a lovely holiday there once and liked the moules et frites.

Fickle, me!

WhiteBadger · 17/11/2022 06:42

Bless him! The "whole country" will certainly not be behind England.

England will be behind England.

The rest of "country" UK and NI will be behind Wales! I'd put a LOT of money on it!

Is there any reason you didn't type "GB and NI"? Northern Ireland is an INTEGRAL part of the UK so its incorrect to type "UK and NI"!

It'd be like taking candy from a baby if you put money on the rest of the UK supporting Wales over England!

During Euro 2020, a whopping 64% of Northern Ireland football fans supported England. 33% of Northern Ireland fans supported Scotland. 14% of Northern Ireland fans supported Portugal.

And just 7% of Northern Ireland fans supported Wales!

7% of Northern Ireland fans said there's no way they could support any other team which is ridiculous since we never qualified!

In Scotland, there is more support for the England team than you might expect. A quarter want England to do badly at the World Cup, but a quarter ALSO want England to do well. 39% of Scottish fans don't mind if England do well.

Nutshell, a minority are ABE and want England to flop.

There is support for Wales in Scotland too. But the UK as a whole has significantly more support for the England team.

No wonder given the popularity of the Premier League across the UK and most fans' favourites will be in the England team too.

Welsh people on the thread have agreed that this is true 🤭

Untitledsquatboulder · 19/11/2022 16:06

@GlacindaTheTroll so we should all take our nationality from our great, great, great grandparents? How much British blood do you think people should be able to claim before they stop being foreign in your Little Britain?

No, I'm larking around, quoting a joke from Blackadder Grin

(it wasn't me who brough Germans to the thread in the first place)

Northern Ireland have qualified for the World Cup three times.
