To think the Prince of Wales is being inappropriate and tone deaf to be so vocally supportive of England

At the World Cup. “The whole country is behind you”. Is it too much to ask that as Prince of Wales he supports Wales at their first ever World Cup?

He must be aware that a significant proportion of the people of Wales are a bit miffed at the speed with which he was given the title. Just goes to show the bubble he’s in.

I thought you wanted him not to be called the Prince of Wales? Now you want him to support you at the footy? (Which I'm sure he will anyway)

If we have to have a Prince of Wales surely he should support Wales.

Why wouldn't he support England, he's English. I can guarantee the Welsh won't be supporting us.

Okay, so if Charles is leading the support for England, maybe William, now Prince of Wales, will be the one to lead the support for Wales?

IcedPurple · 16/11/2022 09:25

KimberleyClark · 16/11/2022 09:19

Are you suggesting that the President Designate of the FA not say a word in support of England at the start of the World Cup?

He should be supporting Wales too otherwise what does his title mean?

And if he 'supported Wales' we'd probably find you here complaining that an English man was 'supporting Wales'.

That said, I wouldn't be at all surprised that he will tweet support for Wales on the day of their matches. However, it won't be in an official capacity as he is President of the English FA, not the Welsh FA.

Really?>
More top the point is no one should watch this rubbish in this vile country

You don't have to watch, it's not compulsory.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 16/11/2022 09:31

Surely he can support both teams? I know I would be if the cup weren’t in Qatar.

KimberleyClark · 16/11/2022 09:32

Anyone can support Wales as far as I am concerned! The more the merrier.

Whereas your whining is perfectly acceptable 🙄

CardiffMam · 16/11/2022 09:34

I don't blame him for supporting England. He is English after all. That's why he shouldn't be Prince of Wales.

You're clearly not that great a supporter yourself, seeing as you thought this was Wales' first World Cup.

simonthedog · 16/11/2022 09:43

I think he was there with the England team as President of the FA. But I think It was short sighted not to have visited the Welsh team and given them his support too.

Oh yes 1958. It’s the first time many will remember though.

I'm sure when England are playing he will support them, when Wales are playing he will support Wales and when they play each other he will keep quiet!

Dotjones · 16/11/2022 09:51

Why the hell would you expect him to support Wales given he's English? His title doesn't mean he's suddenly Welsh, he's the Prince of Wales, not the Welsh Prince. At my previous employer we had a "Head of Sales - Wales" who was about as Scottish as you could get for someone who would do anything for Scotland except live there, just because he had control over the Welsh sales people didn't mean he suddenly started supporting their football team.

And you speak on behalf of all Welsh people do you?

ExhaustedFlamingo · 16/11/2022 09:53

He's the President of the English FA. He's commenting in his capacity as that. It doesn't mean that he won't be cheering on Wales too, and if you follow his tweets, I'm sure you'll find he will be.

Being Prince of Wales isn't a footballing position.

Being the President of the English FA is.

You don't have to agree with Prince William being the Prince of Wales, but this is just a silly argument. It reeks of trying to find any reason to give him a hard time.

The key words in my post were “as far as I am concerned”. I never claimed to speak on behalf of all Welsh people!

Precisely.

KimberleyClark · 16/11/2022 08:51

I wouldn’t feel that way. If he has to be Prince of Wales why shouldn’t it mean something?

Then I dispute your understanding of how football and its fans work.

Because your particular viewpoint would be a total minority.

GooglyEyeballs · 16/11/2022 09:58

Damned if it does and damned if he doesn't to be honest. If he supported Wales people would be moaning about him not being Welsh and has no right to support Wales. If he supports England they all moan that he's not supporting Wales. It's just sports at the end of the day is it really that big of a deal.

But he doesn't. He supports England.
Do you want him to lie and pretend to be a Wales fan?

Labnehi · 16/11/2022 09:59

Well he lied when he said "The whole country is behind you" because the whole of the UK is most certainly not behind them.

A fairer and less contentious comment would be to say "All of England is behind you" at least then he's clearly only speaking in his capacity as an English man, an English football fan and patron of the FA.

As heir to the throne and Prince of Wales saying "country" implies the United Kingdom rather than just one part of it. He lives an incredibly privileged life and has people on hand to advise what would be good words to use - zero excuses for this. Thoughtless as always.

ThursdayLastWeek · 16/11/2022 08:46

Wouldn't it be more insulting to Welsh people if he suddenly started pretending that being The Prince of Wales meant you were Welsh??

IMO it’s the title that’s wrong rather than his personal enthusiasm for football.

Couldn't agree more.

ExtraOnions · 16/11/2022 12:24

You can support more than one team ….

Maybe he has a different arrangement with the Welsh National team.

You are assuming there has been no conversations - which I find highly doubtful.

Saying that it’s pissing of “moaner in chief” Michael Sheen, which is always entertaining
