To think the Prince of Wales is being inappropriate and tone deaf to be so vocally supportive of England

At the World Cup. “The whole country is behind you”. Is it too much to ask that as Prince of Wales he supports Wales at their first ever World Cup?

He must be aware that a significant proportion of the people of Wales are a bit miffed at the speed with which he was given the title. Just goes to show the bubble he’s in.

Are you suggesting that the President Designate of the FA not say a word in support of England at the start of the World Cup?

He should be supporting Wales too otherwise what does his title mean?

Have you actually read what you have typed? Gaining a title doesn't mean you should suddenly switch who you support. So you know how many Liverpool players are Everton fans. Your 'job' is nothing to do with your allegiance to a team

Wirralwifey · 16/11/2022 19:14

Welsh folk would be pissy if he supported Wales anyway. He can’t win. And I say that as Welsh person.

Well he lied when he said "The whole country is behind you" because the whole of the UK is most certainly not behind them.

A fairer and less contentious comment would be to say "All of England is behind you" at least then he's clearly only speaking in his capacity as an English man, an English football fan and patron of the FA.

As heir to the throne and Prince of Wales saying "country" implies the United Kingdom rather than just one part of it. He lives an incredibly privileged life and has people on hand to advise what would be good words to use - zero excuses for this. Thoughtless as always.

All of England isn't behind them, though. I am English and couldn't care less whether they get knocked out in the first round or win the tournament

AnApparitionQuipped · 16/11/2022 19:34

He's now saying he will support both teams:

the80sweregreat · 16/11/2022 19:35

They should support all the teams from the UK
Hopefully they will now!

I think it was only England and Wales who qualified - NI and Scotland don't seem to be in it this year.

KimberleyClark · 16/11/2022 09:05

So his job as Prince of Wales is subordinate to very other job regarding England then?

Did the Welsh FA ever invite him to be their president?

Travis1 · 16/11/2022 19:46

He’s an arsehole anyway OP. No one should be supporting their teams going to this shit show of a tournament. Absolutely disgusting that the future king has not spoken out against it. With any luck the monarchy will all be gone soon and we can stop having to listen to their bullshit

the80sweregreat · 16/11/2022 19:49

I've not been following the World Cup !
I hope they support Wales and England.

Cleveramazing · 16/11/2022 19:50

I agree OP .Wales and England arw both representing the uK so I thought it was tone deaf to only be outwardly supporting England!

VladmirsPoutine · 16/11/2022 19:55

It seems bizarre that he's the head of the FA? Why? What qualifies him other than being born royal which in itself shouldn't even exist.

That's a matter for the FA

The first 4 presidents were footballers or managers, but every one since 1938 has been a Royal or aristocratic very minor royal.

So presumably the FA actively want the royal connection

balalake · 16/11/2022 20:10

It is not the first ever time the men's team have been at the World Cup finals, the previous one was in 1958.

The Prince of Wales suddenly changing allegiance I expect would not go down well.

Egarag · 16/11/2022 20:20

I hope football is the winner.

Why wouldn't he support England, he's English. I can guarantee the Welsh won't be supporting us.

He knows you’ll be on the first plane home and he wants a run for his money.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

ThursdayLastWeek · 16/11/2022 08:46

Wouldn't it be more insulting to Welsh people if he suddenly started pretending that being The Prince of Wales meant you were Welsh??

IMO it’s the title that’s wrong rather than his personal enthusiasm for football.

Wrong way round: it's more insulting to appoint a Prince of Wales who has so little affinity for the country.

SheWoreARaspberryBeret123 · 17/11/2022 05:06

🙄

SkinnyFatte · 17/11/2022 05:15

I think having PoW as a title is anachronistic. Why not "Crown Prince" as a title like in other monarchies?

onlythreenow · 17/11/2022 05:54

William is President Designate of the FA. He was part of England's unsuccessful bid to host the World Cup several years ago. It's his 'job' to vocally support English football.

Agree - even I know this and I don't live in the UK (and couldn't care less about football!)

ParsleySageRosemary · 17/11/2022 06:07

Oh god. I can’t stand football at all myself and this tribalism is why. Really can’t be bothered with any of it.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 16/11/2022 08:48

I guarantee if he'd said he was supporting Wales then the Welsh would still be pissy about it

"What's he ever done for us, he can fuck back off and support England" type things no doubt 😂

What a twatty thing to say

Upthebracket22 · 17/11/2022 06:38

Totally agree OP!

But giving an English prince the title of ‘prince of wales’ was never going to end well.

I am Welsh, will be shouting for the boys and hope they do well!

Yma o hyd! Annibyniaeth!

WhiteBadger · 17/11/2022 06:42

Bless him! The "whole country" will certainly not be behind England.

England will be behind England.

The rest of "country" UK and NI will be behind Wales! I'd put a LOT of money on it!

generalh · 17/11/2022 06:45

OoooohMatron · 16/11/2022 09:23

Why wouldn't he support England, he's English. I can guarantee the Welsh won't be supporting us.

I did last year when I had them in the sweepstake for the Euros 🤭
