To think the Prince of Wales is being inappropriate and tone deaf to be so vocally supportive of England

At the World Cup. “The whole country is behind you”. Is it too much to ask that as Prince of Wales he supports Wales at their first ever World Cup?

He must be aware that a significant proportion of the people of Wales are a bit miffed at the speed with which he was given the title. Just goes to show the bubble he’s in.

Wouldn't it be more insulting to Welsh people if he suddenly started pretending that being The Prince of Wales meant you were Welsh??

IMO it’s the title that’s wrong rather than his personal enthusiasm for football.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 16/11/2022 08:48

I guarantee if he'd said he was supporting Wales then the Welsh would still be pissy about it

"What's he ever done for us, he can fuck back off and support England" type things no doubt 😂

Sirzy · 16/11/2022 08:48

Isn’t he the figure head for the FA which is why he would be showing support for England. That and the fact he is a fan!

BeyondThinkOfTheOptics · 16/11/2022 08:49

It's certainly interesting, isn't it - given how many people were so keen to point out that he was a "welsh prince of wales" as 500 years ago his great-great-great-(however many greats) grandad was welsh.

If he's so welsh, why support England? Or - maybe he isn't actually welsh, and therefore shouldn't be Prince of Wales? It's a pretty simple either/or, surely?

BeyondThinkOfTheOptics · 16/11/2022 08:50

To be clear, I have no issue him supporting England - as he is English! It's just funny give the insistence he is "welsh enough" to be "our" Prince!

I wouldn’t feel that way. If he has to be Prince of Wales why shouldn’t it mean something?

He knows you’ll be on the first plane home and he wants a run for his money.

Dyrne · 16/11/2022 08:54

I’d have assumed he’s speaking in his capacity as the head of the FA, not as the Prince of Wales.

You’re not unreasonable to be annoyed he’s the POW in the first place, but you are being Unreasonable in this specific circumstance.

AllyCatTown · 16/11/2022 08:55

I agree OP.

I do feel Wales is being ignored and that they should be given more coverage. I get that England have more of a chance of progressing but still it’s annoying turning on tv to see everyone talking about another country when your country is also involved in the tournament.

I also think the royals should be impartial but Charles is never going to be as tactful as his mother. I get he is head of FA but you can still voice support to all teams from UK who qualified.

Blueroses99 · 16/11/2022 08:58

Prince William is the President of the FA (Governing body for English football) and Patron of Welsh Rugby Union. His wife Catherine is Patron of English rugby and Princess Anne is patron of Scottish rugby.

So he talking in his role as President of the FA, and it would be a clear conflict to congratulate another team. Catherine got similar criticism for a message of support for the English rugby team recently.

It may be more appropriate to step down from roles that cut across him representing all of the UK though.

PuttingDownRoots · 16/11/2022 08:59

The England Vs Wales game will be interesting in which public figures support which team...

londongals · 16/11/2022 09:00

Really?>
More top the point is no one should watch this rubbish in this vile country

bellabasset · 16/11/2022 09:03

He's always supported England as he's President of the FA. He seems to put a lot of effort into supporting the charities or organisations he's associated with.

IcedPurple · 16/11/2022 09:04

William is President Designate of the FA. He was part of England's unsuccessful bid to host the World Cup several years ago. It's his 'job' to vocally support English football.

TheVeryLastUsername · 16/11/2022 09:04

“a significant proportion”

In my experience, most people here don’t care.

KimberleyClark · 16/11/2022 09:05

So his job as Prince of Wales is subordinate to very other job regarding England then?

OP posts:
maranella · 16/11/2022 09:07

He should be supporting any and all British teams that made it to the World Cup and not showing favour IMO.

More that one job is actually relevant to football.

myrtleWilson · 16/11/2022 09:12

The Queen was patron of the FA of Wales but I guess they're still reallocating patronages

TwoRockSalmonAndAHaporthOfChips · 16/11/2022 09:14

maranella · 16/11/2022 09:07

He should be supporting any and all British teams that made it to the World Cup and not showing favour IMO.

But he’s the president of the English Football Association! They are literally his team!

There are lots of things to get frothy about at the moment, not least the fact of where the World Cup is happening. But Man Whose Job It Is To Support A Team Supports That Team isn’t one of them.

Nevermind91 · 16/11/2022 09:14

It's not their "first ever", but that's beside the point. He is English, so it seems fairly logical to support England, especially as he has a role within the FA.
He has shown a great love for Wales in the past, so I would assume he would be pleased with any success that came their way.

IcedPurple · 16/11/2022 09:16

KimberleyClark · 16/11/2022 09:05

Where does the job description of Prince of Wales say that he cannot honour his patronages?

Are you suggesting that the President Designate of the FA not say a word in support of England at the start of the World Cup?

PAFMO · 16/11/2022 09:18

I thought you wanted him not to be called the Prince of Wales? Now you want him to support you at the footy? (Which I'm sure he will anyway)

MavisChunch29 · 16/11/2022 09:18

He could have said "the home nations" without causing a kerfuffle. I agree just referring to England is off.

KimberleyClark · 16/11/2022 09:19

He should be supporting Wales too otherwise what does his title mean?
