To shower every day or not?

Do you shower every day or not?

I am not showering every day and I come from a country that very few people shower every day!

I dislike being wet and as a kid I didn’t shower everyday too. Maybe I don’t do it because I was not taught to do it as kid.

Those who shower every day do you also shower your kids everyday?

And those you shower every day do you get your hair wet or shampoo them everyday?

I wouldn’t be able to do this everyday!!!! Many British people I know shower every day (either morning or night) and I find it so hard mentally and physically to invest time on that on a daily basis given everything is in such a fast pace.

I would never sacrifice time from my sleep to shower in the morning!

@PeloFondo ah but then implication with that defence is that they make an exception for people with disabilities to be smelly(!)

Grim means serious or harsh. It does not mean gross.

Grim can also mean 'really unpleasant' according to the Cambridge dictionary.

WeDontNeedToTalkAboutJamie · 14/11/2022 23:34

How often do I shower? I think I've had 3 this year.

closingloop · 14/11/2022 23:34

It's no wonder that the country was (is??) full of hosepipe bans and everyone has massive electricity bills.

Save the environment and slow climate change by heating and wasting less water.

Creameggs223 · 14/11/2022 23:35

Shower cap and quick shower just as quick todo that as it is to wash plus it wakes me up.

maddy68 · 14/11/2022 23:37

Yes I feel really unclean unless I shower every morning. But as long as you don't smell or look unkempt then fine

Exactly! It's not hard to be clean even with limited water but it is if you can't wash yourself
Being able to have a shower and bath is a privilege a lot of people don't see as that, but you should be able to know how to wash yourself without either of those

Times I've had to sink wash - broken ankle x 2, spinal surgery, plastic surgery in my armpit...

Erm showers are quick and use less water than baths a quick shower of a morning Is probably equal to 2 baths a week.

Put your hair in a shower cap. 3 minute warm soapy shower and rinse. In the evening before bed if you dread doing it on cold mornings. Done. It’s not a big involved thing taking an hour.

I understand you don’t venture far from home, and we’ve all been there, skipping a day here and there. But generally a shower every day is good. I like feeling fresh and clean, smell good. I think we all can tell if others or ourselves are not so fresh. Do what you want though but every 3 days or once a week? Ick.

AnnieSnap · 14/11/2022 23:39

Those saying you shower before getting into bed to get rid of grime. Are you working on building sites or dusty Warehouses? Those who spend our time in regular environments are thankfully not covered in grime 😂🤣 There is some germ phobic obsessive thinking underpinning lots of posts on this thread. I say that as a bit of a germ phobic myself (hands, worktops etc), yet I don’t shower daily or even (shock horror) every other day, unless I have been exercising. Every few days works fine for me unless it’s a hot day, or I’ve been exercising!

Smarshian · 14/11/2022 23:40

I do on occasion miss a day, but in general shower daily. Today I’ve had 3 showers, morning shower, took kids swimming so quick rinse at the pool, played netball so shower and hair wash after.
I think people can get away with missing the occasional day, but going a whole week you are almost certainly going to be smelly, people just get this horrible musty smell about them.

@Creameggs223 not quite so true anymore, unfortunately.

20 odd years ago it was, but these days people enjoy longer showers and many have high pressured or power showers..some with multiple jets, which means that showers aren't always particularly water-efficient anymore.

It's why water companies have started pushing aerated shower heads and shower timers.

Legallypinkish · 14/11/2022 23:43

Yes I’ve always had a shower or bath every day, hair wash every other day. 5 minutes if I don’t need to wash my hair of about 15 if I do. Sometimes I couldn’t be arsed to have a wash as it would probably take longer. Kids are teens now and shower every day and they were either bathed or showered when they were little.

MsCactus · 14/11/2022 23:43

This is an interesting one. My mum has super dry skin and eczema - she doesn't really sweat and rarely showers, usually does a quick strip wash under her arms and groin. I shower everyday and she thinks it's madness.

To be fair, it does dry out my skin like mad. I use a soap substitute from the pharmacy because soap is too harsh for my skin everyday and I break out in rashes.

But I limit my shower to give minutes in the morning so it's no big time suck for me.

As a society we probably do wash our skin too much...

LBFseBrom · 14/11/2022 23:44

If you go out to work, it's a good idea to have a shower and wash hair in the morning. It's invigorating and sets you up for the day. I never left the house without a bath or shower and if I was going out in the evening, would do so again beforehand. It's nice to feel clean and fresh.

If you are at home all the time it won't hurt to miss occasionally.

Faultymain5 · 14/11/2022 23:44

Depends how you shower though, which can be quite individual. Turn on water, get wet, wet flannel water off lather, water on rinse, out, 2mins 45 seconds of water running. We’re still trying to work out how not to waste the first 25 seconds of cold to lukewarm water.

xprincessxjanetx · 14/11/2022 23:44

I shower daily, but I also go to the gym everyday for 2 hours so if I didn't it would be fairly disgusting!

MadelineUsher · 14/11/2022 23:45

It is very rare that I have smelt someone's body odour to an unpleasant degreeon public transport, and then it is usually someone who is clearly living a very difficult life. It is the people who layer themselves in products that smell. Stinky shampoos, conditioners, hair products, deodorants, body spray, hand lotions, perfumes. Sometimes I have to shift train carriages to escape the stench.

The idea you automatically smell if you don't shower every day is silly. All bodies are different. Someone with a mild body smell at least doesn't give others chemical headaches or asthma attacks, unlike the "well-groomed" over-scented ones.

xprincessxjanetx · 14/11/2022 23:47

Forgot to mention, my DC (aged 9m, 2, 4, 6, 7 and 12) all shower every other day.

TheOrigRights · 14/11/2022 23:47

Some days I shower more than once, other (rarely) not at all.
My showers mostly revolve around sport.
Yesterday I did a long run and showered at about 2pm. I'm not a sweaty person and am not having night sweats at the moment (I'm 52 and going through perimenopause and the sweats seem to come and go). I have a desk job, went for a walk and then out in the evening. I changed my clothes but didn't shower.

Some days I'll swim then shower and run or something else and have another shower.

I'm clean and don't smell.
We got a new shower this year and it's really powerful (joy!) but I have noticed it does dry my skin out more than the old dribbler!

Faultymain5 · 14/11/2022 23:48

Public transport is disgusting and dirty and apparently full of people that clean their skin only two-three times a week.

travel on the tube then get a white flannel and see if there’s no dirt.

Look I’m sure most people have a facial routine before bed. If it’s not just make up coming off your face what do you think is on your body (especially the exposed parts).

asblindasabat · 14/11/2022 23:49

I shower everyday and I personally think everyone should. It’s just basic hygiene and common sense.

Jade31 · 14/11/2022 23:49

if you have a shower over bath; test how much a shower saves you. I tried this and was shocked a shower actually was equivalent to 2baths and some!

Faultymain5 · 14/11/2022 23:52

How long are you in the shower for. You should probably try my husband’s method.

Baths are unhygienic so I end up showering after them. My last bath was 2015.

moanyhole · 14/11/2022 23:53

I shower in the evenings and have a freshen up with a flannel in the mornings at the sink. Im up before everyone else so don't want to wake them. If im not working the next day I'll wash at the sink evening and the next morning to save water and electricity. I work with people with disabilities, some are bed bound and can't shower so are exclusively bed bathed, they don't smell at all. The important thing is that you wash everyday.
Op please say that you at least wash your nether regions daily and that you don't go up to a week with without cleaning your arse. Cos that's bad.
