To shower every day or not?

Do you shower every day or not?

I am not showering every day and I come from a country that very few people shower every day!

I dislike being wet and as a kid I didn’t shower everyday too. Maybe I don’t do it because I was not taught to do it as kid.

Those who shower every day do you also shower your kids everyday?

And those you shower every day do you get your hair wet or shampoo them everyday?

I wouldn’t be able to do this everyday!!!! Many British people I know shower every day (either morning or night) and I find it so hard mentally and physically to invest time on that on a daily basis given everything is in such a fast pace.

I would never sacrifice time from my sleep to shower in the morning!

So I’m not British and this is most emphatically not a thing where I’m from. We shower or we bathe, but I have no idea what ‘a wash’ is, if it differs from those things and these responses aren’t making it much clearer.

So, you can't possibly imagine what it might be? Not even slightly?

You've never seen a film, a TV show, read a book, seen a photo, or a documentary, or a re enactment or anything where someone washes other than in a shower or a bath?

But you asked how it was selfish. I was giving you an answer.

IIRC I asked the poster that just said ‘selfish’. But anyway it matters not now. I consider myself well and truly told and will be having a sink wash every other week only from now on to save the planet.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 15/11/2022 07:43

This comes up on Mumsnet often and then there is a competitive match between people who shower 5 times and day and those that do it once a month.

For me, I have to shower daily. Each morning. I would feel dirty otherwise. Wash my hair every other day and as it is curly I let it air dry. Everyone in my house showers daily (including teens) and when they were younger they had a bath daily. One of them had bad eczema and her consultant said a short bath each day was crucial (so I don't get the people who have kids with eczema who say otherwise but I suspect they're not under a consultant for their treatment).

Honestly some people do look/smell like they don't wash daily but mistakenly think others don't notice. They do. They're just too polite to say anything.

For me a shower is less than 5 mins or maybe 6 if I wash my hair so it hardly takes time out from my morning. Washing in the sink would take as long.

I like to feel fresh and clean. Showering daily does that for me.

I don't see why my two showers a day is 'using resources excessively'. It seems that only people on MN perceive things so weirdly.
In RL people aren't quite so dramatic.

No it’s not “only people on Mumsnet” who would think this is excessive use of resources. For goodness sake, are you walking around with your eyes and ears shut? Are you aware of the energy crisis? Water shortages? Or do you just not care? Of course it’s excessive and of course it’s selfish. Not just you, everyone crowing about it on here.

Sparklingbrook · 15/11/2022 07:48

It really does. I don’t think I’ve ever discussed this in RL, ever. A competitive hygiene (or lack off) thread in AIBU. A MN staple.

Unless there is lack of water , yes it is ! And I have family living all over the world from USA to Middle East to Africa .

"Unless there is a lack of water" - well yes....exactly.

Sparklingbrook · 15/11/2022 07:50

Well I’m off to work. In my car. Which is no doubt also selfish. I’m an actual monster.

Zanatdy · 15/11/2022 07:51

I shower every other day. Largely as my hair gets greasy if I go any longer. I used to shower daily but since I grew my hair and it needs drying and straightening I’d rather not straighten it daily. I definitely don’t smell.

HarvestThyme · 15/11/2022 07:52

What do people who shower once or twice a week do about exercise? I shower daily, but I do at least 30 minutes of exercise that works up a sweat most days. I also walk a lot (8km min daily), and that also makes me sweat (slightly) if I'm walking quite fast or far.

You're probably to blame for the NHS too.

Probably Brexit as well.

qpmz · 15/11/2022 08:02

What country are you from? Most people shower daily. Takes two mins and makes you feel awake and fresh.
Doesn't mean the whole world does the same thing but I'd be interested to know which countries differ.

Geeez....I bet you're one of those fuckers leaving painted stones about as well, aren't you.

I imagine they are not doing the sort of exercise which works up a sweat, or not exercising at all. Many people don't.

I don't understand the utter batshittery of ANYONE who washes their tits, arse, and bits with soap and a flannel, at the sink. Having a shower is FAR quicker,
I don’t understand it either , surely it’s messy ? I keep thinking of puddles from washing with the flannel , and just because people did it in the olden days , it doesn’t mean that we should still keep doing it, most people didn’t have shower installed till the early 80?

I don't have a shower. No batshittery here.

I was only a child in the 70s and as kid's we shared bath water. Always a fight on who would go 1st.

yep. I think kids still do. I think adults did more then, I’m sure it might come back though

JackTorrance · 15/11/2022 08:59

I shower twice a day, which I know some would consider excessive but it's not a full shower and hair wash, it's so I can wash the crucial bits quickly and a shower with a detachable shower head is considerably easier than faffing around at a sink dripping everywhere.

OP you say you don't get dirty just being at home. I mean true, most of you doesn't, but you're having bodily functions daily from your undercarriage and that needs a wash.

XingMing · 15/11/2022 09:00

Because I get eczema badly, I now only shower every other day, and in the coolest water I can bear!

ClaudineClare · 15/11/2022 09:03

Lockheart · 15/11/2022 07:20

You don't, but if you're using resources excessively then people will perceive that as selfish.

This is just daft. Sparkling's showers, are not going to make a jot of difference one way or another. Water supplies are massively mismanaged in the UK and until that is sorted nothing consumers do will impact on the millions of gallons wasted through leaks and the pollution.

KimberleyClark · 15/11/2022 09:03

I shower most days and wash on the days I don’t. Wash my hair every 5 days or so.

America12 · 15/11/2022 09:14

Greenballoons · 14/11/2022 22:27

Yes but if in this cold if you get out with wet hair you may catch a cold, no?

Being cold doesn't cause colds.

Greenballoons · 15/11/2022 09:34

If you are just slightly unwell it will make you much worse in no time though.

Plus it’s not nice being cold

I have a bath every night before bed, and a shower and hair wash every morning.
I've done this all my life.

I know someone who only showers and washes hair once a week. She legitimately does not smell. I don’t know if she does a sink wash throughout the week (didn’t know that was a thing until this thread!). So it is possible.

So I think it depends on your body. I need to shower everyday or I legitimately smell. But knowing someone who can get away with once a week does suggest that it’s not a definite.

I agree with this - my mum doesn't shower everyday, has very dry skin, and doesn't smell.

I need to wash everyday day (or every two days max, with wet wipes in-between) or else I smell. My skin is much oilier though - everyone's different

Greenballoons · 15/11/2022 10:35

Do you fill the bathtub with water every single night??? Gosh, a lot of energy, a lot of water, a lot of money and a lot of time!!!
