To shower every day or not?

Do you shower every day or not?

I am not showering every day and I come from a country that very few people shower every day!

I dislike being wet and as a kid I didn’t shower everyday too. Maybe I don’t do it because I was not taught to do it as kid.

Those who shower every day do you also shower your kids everyday?

And those you shower every day do you get your hair wet or shampoo them everyday?

I wouldn’t be able to do this everyday!!!! Many British people I know shower every day (either morning or night) and I find it so hard mentally and physically to invest time on that on a daily basis given everything is in such a fast pace.

I would never sacrifice time from my sleep to shower in the morning!

I shower every 3 days as a minimum and on a weekly basis as a maximum .

My hair is really dry, never oily and very curly as well. Washing them takes about 30min.

Then when I shower I shave legs etc., body scrub, heels rub and the body part takes another 15min.

Put another 15min to dress, put cream on, clean the bathroom from fallen hair etc.

In total body and hair takes me an hour!

I am very surprised when people say it takes 3mins! And in this cold and dark in the mornings is the very last thing I want to do… brrrr!

OP, I have exactly the same hair type as you, and I tend to wash it every 10-14 days. That in itself is a job and a half, and a whole other thread!

Growing up, we always bathed at night, so always stuck to that. For quite a few years, I lived in a flat with just a shower room, and I grew to love having a shower every morning. Because I do prefer baths, it always feels a bit weird, and definitely decadent having a bath in the morning, so my default it to have a bath each night. However, if I fancy a shower in the morning, I have one.

Showering is no chore at all. My hair is tied up and under a shower cap. I take less than five minutes in the shower most of the time but that is because I only shave my legs, exfoliate and things like that once or twice a week, usually at the weekend when I have more time. Ditto applying body cream.

Even if I have been in the house all day and not gone out, I would still feel grubby. I just could not imagine getting into bed at night having not bathed or showered. If your routine suits you, you do not feel grubby, nor do not smell, that's all that matters.

What an absurd thing to say. In what way is showering twice a day ‘selfish’. 🤔

Overuse of earth's resources and no care for saving water?

You have no idea of my useage of water. ConfusedI want to shower to be fresh for work and fresh for bed. Both showers are about 3 minutes each.
People having one bath a day would use more water.

I don't, but showering twice a day is in the main unecessary and therefore an overuse with no thought to saving water, whether it's three minutes or thirty.

Yes but if in this cold if you get out with wet hair you may catch a cold, no?

Old wife's tale!! I normally shower just before bed and go to sleep with wet hair. Sometimes I'll wash my hair tie it up and go straight outside whilst it's still wet and I've never caught a cold in doing so

Sparklingbrook · 15/11/2022 06:52

The main one is it? Interesting. How do you know that without having a full breakdown of my daily water usage? Grin

Grim. So that explains why so many people stink on public transport.

I’d say it was flippant (and very often true), as opposed to rude.

Showering twice a day is completely unnecessary unless you wake up sweaty/stinky in the morning and are the same by the time you finish your day.

Shower as often as you're comfortable with!

I shower twice a day because it's as often as I'm comfortable with.

I don't need to. For the vast majority of people the vast majority of the time showering twice a day is unecessary.

Not kind or respectful to other cultures. In Britain daily showering is a very recent thing, people didn't used to bath or shower ever day.

Ah sorry 'in the main' not 'the main' @Lockheart so you don't want my water usage. That would have been weird I guess.
I don't think it's for other people to decide what is necessary or unnecessary as everyone is different when it comes to hygiene.

Then I am happy to not be in the vast majority in this case. I don't need to justify myself.

PurpleButterflyWings · 14/11/2022 23:12

Exactly this. ^ If you don't shower for 3 days - or a WEEK as the OP claims, you are deluded if you think you don't stink of B.O. and fuck knows what else! Confused

That's what deodorant is for though.Showering every day but not using deoderant wouldn't stop someone smelling of sweat...although admittedly not showering for one whole week I think would cause an issue.

Mummyof287 · 15/11/2022 07:19

I think there are so many factors, including how much body hair someone has and how often they have sex.

You don't, but if you're using resources excessively then people will perceive that as selfish.

It seems that many factors can't be taken into account for the purposes of this thread. Everyone is exactly the same.

I'm in my 50s and when I was growing up people didn't shower every day. The only shower we had at home was a rubber thing attached to the bath taps for hair washing. I don't remember exactly how often but I certainly didn't bath every day. We couldn't afford it. I washed thoroughly and I didn't smell. Neither did my friends.

My dear old dad had a bath once a week. He was always immaculately groomed and dressed and smelt lovely.

Perhaps with water heating being so expensive people might stop describing others who don't shower twice a day as 'grim'. They don't have to be.

I'm the same age and people reeked!
They just covered up the smell with perfume or aftershave.
All the men had greasy hair which was plastered down.
It takes 5 minutes to shower, I can't see why people make such a fuss .
It's part of being an adult to maintain good personal hygiene.

bellinisurge · 15/11/2022 07:23

Every few days. Don't go out much. Not very active- health issues. So I don't feel the need. When I went out to work every day, I always would. Yes, showers take 3-5 mins max, but drying your hair and body takes at least that too.

Sparklingbrook · 15/11/2022 07:24

Lockheart · 15/11/2022 07:20

I don't see why my two showers a day is 'using resources excessively'. It seems that only people on MN perceive things so weirdly.
In RL people aren't quite so dramatic.

I think there’s other posters that shower twice a day and wasn’t there one who showered 4 times a day. It’s not just me. You might want to tell them too.
