that’s it really. I’m not fussed about the ‘king’ -
happy to downgrade the entire system.
the jewels, the palaces, the changing of the guard belong to the country, and/or people … if Charles buggers off we keep all the tourist attractions, and all that people say makes the royal family worth while ££
now the Queen has gone, the ‘firm’ needs to go
done with them. AIBU?

Metaphors are absolutely no problem to me, given that I’m an English graduate. Don’t bother with the link.

Am I the only person who thinks metaphors nees to be consistent the work? 🙁

Yes with a regency.

Probably have Princess Anne running the show with a soucon of Edward. Can't see the major streamers wanting to commission a podcast from Kate anytime soon.

alisa2022 · 24/11/2022 22:16

YANBU, pointless and unneccesary in this age, what do they do,beside cut some ribbons, lecture poor people on climate earming when they fly private jets and helicopters, best one was will and kate pulling up in 250k electric bmw in promotion of being green, yes im sure most people can relate to buying a car thats more expensive than some peoples houses that they pay mortgage on for 25years. Not even going to touch the fishy people they hang around with, jimmy sa vile, prince charming himself (andrew), queen and duke also have had rumours from their younger years hut back then it was easier to do damage control, charles mess with diana and now married to his mistress- its like jeremy kyle show material.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 24/11/2022 22:48

It should go. It is just another manifestation of the gerontocracy in control of the UK.

Florenz · 24/11/2022 22:55

If you want to get rid of the Monarchy, you need to come up with a better alternative. Having some politician or "celebrity" as head of state - and if you put it up for a vote, that's you you're going to get - would be far, far worse.

Gerontocracy! When we have the youngest PM in over 100 years?

alisa2022 · 24/11/2022 23:14

Elected President like in other countries? None of that current crowd either who are rich boys and girls from the same school. How can people take the RF seriously, by their command other nations got pillaged, looted, raped, were behind worlds biggest genocides and the british taxpayers are annually topping them up,why, they should go the same way slavery did and all the looted items should be given back to the native countries.

Florenz · 24/11/2022 23:52

What genocides has King Charles been responsible for?

Henuinequest · 25/11/2022 06:48

‘If you want to get rid of the Monarchy, you need to come up with a better alternative.’

If you actually ready the thread you see alternatives mentioned, the Irish model would work well for the U.K. but you could have a look around at what some other countries have.
How about a Monarchy more like Scandi ones ? Elected heads of states?
rhe beauty of it is - we can actually choose something that works.

No-one, and I mean NO-ONE is looking at us and going - oooh, let’s have one family, unelected, give them unprecedented political influence and bin any elected heads of state models in favour of that.

Blossomtoes · 25/11/2022 07:57

You couldn’t get a Rizla between the British and Danish or Swedish monarchies. If you think the British monarch has political power think again. If they did Johnson’s prorogue of Parliament wouldn’t have had to go through the courts.

Givemepinkgin · 25/11/2022 08:09

We don’t need the Monarchy… Why is our tax payers money paying for these privileged people to live their extravagant lifestyles?? … It’s especially in bad taste considering the times we live in and the cost of living crisis and general economy going down hill in the UK … I would love an election to come about to abolish this pointless, ridiculous and expensive tradition our country has…

vera99 · 25/11/2022 08:21

I was a citizen of Europe with freedom of movement and was able to live, retire and work all over the continent. That was taken away from me by insular, narrow-minded "British' patriots that probably have pictures of the RF on the wall and talked endlessly of British exceptionalism and WW2. I've had enough of this backwards-looking, flag-waving dinosaur mentality. I hope to see the end of the British Royal family as head of state before I die and the birth of a new forward-looking Republic proud to be at the heart of a peaceful Europe.

It would be unlikely to go the way you hope.

At the moment yes you're right. But there is a beachhead for Republicanism based on the back of free speech and the decline of our country (sadly) . None of this current shower is a patch on the late Queen and they and the country knows it.

As a remainer, a socialist and a feminist, so have I. As a monarchist I fail to see what impact ditching the monarchy would have on that dinosaur mentality.

It's about being a grown-up citizen with an empowered stake in a democratic country. The Royal Family is unaccountable, appointing a head of state using the hereditary principle is undemocratic, unfair and elitist and should instead be decided by democratic elections. The monarchy's expense and tax-free inheritance are unacceptable in the modern era, and they still hold the royal prerogative which grants the Prime Minister powers such as the ability to declare war or sign treaties without a vote in Parliament are all good arguments for their abolition.

Yes, that's a big problem with this thread. We want rid of the monarchy because of Imperialism, Bloody Sunday and Brexit. These things have no connection with each other. I voted remain, but am in favour of keeping the moarchy. But what would really change if we went for a Republic? My feeling is, not that much - except that monarchists like me would feel a little sad about it.

Brexit has nothing to do with the monarchy.

err I thought they were to stay out of politics.

Well, if the Sun printed it, it must be true! 😂Perhaps if Remainers had spent more time persuading people of the merits of the EU and less time insulting Britain and British voters we might not have lost the vote - it was a very close run thing.

RaRaRaspoutine · 25/11/2022 11:07

I don’t recall that but it looks like they got in to trouble with the headline, a quick look -

a ruling by the Independent Press Standards Organisation that the headline was “significantly misleading”.

Exactly. The campaign was woeful and I voted Remain.

and then there is the time when she weighed in discretely but powerfully on Scottish independence. On that, I agree with her but that's not the point. Oh and King Charle's on architecture and all the rest and more importantly lobbying secretly for exemptions from taxes and regulations on the royal estates - they can't have it both ways.
