Goodbye Monarchy, as is

that’s it really. I’m not fussed about the ‘king’ -
happy to downgrade the entire system.
the jewels, the palaces, the changing of the guard belong to the country, and/or people … if Charles buggers off we keep all the tourist attractions, and all that people say makes the royal family worth while ££
now the Queen has gone, the ‘firm’ needs to go
done with them. AIBU?

Actually most of the palaces and the jewels are private property and do not belong to the state.

Ah is that what it's called. So if I sail all the way to hmmm let me think... India, for the sake of argument, happen to come across a few shiny bits and pieces I like then decide to take them back with me then it's considered my 'private property'. That's good to know. How about if I then decided to set my sights on the continent of Africa because they also have a few nice shiny things....

Drip drip drip and they’re on their way out… Zara whatever has her husband on a commercial show now milking his royal
connections.

onlythreenow · 24/11/2022 05:07

Yawn ....... What a boring little lot of non-entites you all are, and yet you are deluded enough to think that just because you don't "approve" of the monarchy (I'm sure they will be devastated) they will disappear. Maybe it's time to grow up and make some effort to improve your own lives and stop envying others.

Seeing as they are funded by tax payers everyone has an opinion. We're all non entities as far as RF is concerned even you.

They survive because they are the nation's favourite soap opera, not because they do anything that actually needs to be done.

I think that’s true to a large extent. They perform to a huge and very fickle audience.

The Montecito spin-off is the royal Knots Landing.

Mike Tindall is mainly known as an ex-rugby player who was in the England team that won the World Cup in 2003. He has been on reality shows on commercial TV before. I hardly think that his appearance on I'm a Celebrity is a step towards the end of the monarchy.

Henuinequest · 24/11/2022 09:14

‘Mike Tindall is mainly known as an ex-rugby playeR’

yeah, because reality tv shows are stuffed fu of rugby players from 20 years ago who’ve done nothing since - other than marry into the royal family that is…
I’m sure he would have been absolutely TOP anyway of the list along with all those other players no-one really remembers anymore

Blossomtoes · 24/11/2022 09:20

Reality shows are stuffed with Z list alleged celebrities nobody really remembers any more. And some nobody will remember in 20 years time. It’s beyond me why anyone’s criticising Tindall when there’s a disgraced politician picking up £400k in there. Funny values some people have.

Henuinequest · 24/11/2022 09:21

‘Seeing as they are funded by tax payers everyone has an opinion. We're all non entities as far as RF is concerned even you.’

This. They aren’t some private family. They choose to keep taking the money, using the palaces and houses, getting the freebies to World Cup finals, tennis, events… wearing medals they haven’t earned. Taking titles and bestowing more titles on each other…

so, yes, we do get to have an opinion on these parasites…

Henuinequest · 24/11/2022 09:41

The Irish Times did a cracking piece on the Royals and for me this below was the highlight… I now see all rabid royalists as nuts being, well, really into clowns…

“Having a monarchy next door is a little like having a neighbour who’s really into clowns and has daubed their house with clown murals, displays clown dolls in each window and has an insatiable desire to hear about and discuss clown-related news stories. More specifically, for the Irish, it’s like having a neighbour who’s really into clowns and, also, your grandfather was murdered by a clown.”

Except for the fact that James Haskell went into I'm A Celebrity in 2019en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Haskell#I'm_a_Celebrity...Get_Me_Out_of_Here!

That's not entirely fair. Somebody needs to open hospitals and community centres and sit on boards for charities. You might not agree that it should be them, but the job they do needs to be done by somebody. In fact, more than one person as the amount that Princess Anne (for instance) does is quite enough for one person.

Henuinequest · 24/11/2022 13:21

‘Somebody needs to open hospitals and community centres and sit on boards for charities.’

😅😅😅that might be the shittest argument I’ve EVER heard for keeping the Monarchy!!
so if it weren’t for the King, community centres wouldn’t open, hospitals wouldn’t exist ( are we even opening new hospitals? I wish we were) and charities would collapse??

I mean, you might think that the boards of charities are run by people with community experience, experts in their fields, and people with financial qualifications but apparently it’s actually the royal family holding every thing together - who knew!

I was replying to another poster who said the monarchy didn't do anything. If you had actually read what I wrote, I acknowledge that these jobs didn't have to be done by the monarchy. Your prejudice is really showing here ...

Considering close relatives of the current royal family (including a child) were actually murdered by Irish Republicans that joke was rather poor taste. I would have expected better from the Irish Times. The people in favour of getting rid of the monarchy on this thread are coming across as rather nasty ...

Henuinequest · 24/11/2022 14:01

@Popgoestheweaselagain

It wasn’t a joke, it was an opinion piece on the English royal family, from the perspective of a former colony. And don’t lecture me about the IRA, thanks.
I’m from Northern Ireland and my family more than suffered at the hands of both sets of terrorist, including murdered children.
Out of interest do you get offended as much about the murder of Irish children at the hands of The British military? Or the murder of civilians, shot in the back, by British paras?
just curious.

Henuinequest · 24/11/2022 14:04

I thought the clown analogy worked very well, have shared it with some friends of other nationalities and they agreed that it was pretty much what it was like…

I get offended when people joke about it or make out that it was all one-sided - yes. All families who lost loved ones in the troubles should have their grief recognised - whoever they are. It's also just daft to claim that the royal family murdered anybody as they haven't any political power and didn't have any when your grandfather was alive. However, I can see you have an axe to grind, so won't get into an argument.

Henuinequest · 24/11/2022 14:13

‘It's also just daft to claim that the royal family murdered anybody’

which posters are claiming that? I must have missed those posts. The ones who think they should go are mostly talking about the waste of money, the abuse of privilege and the protection of sweatless rapey creeps.

You are.

and, also, your grandfather was murdered by a clown

Metaphors can be tricky for some people to understand. I’ll find the entire article, pop the link up. Perhaps with more context you’ll struggle less to get it.

Blossomtoes · 24/11/2022 17:38

Metaphors are absolutely no problem to me, given that I’m an English graduate. Don’t bother with the link.

Ballygoforwards · 24/11/2022 17:48

If William died in a road accident next week for example, and Charles died of natural causes in a couple of years, would we have an 11 year old king?

Yes with a regency.
