What would you make of this? Not sure what I'm asking. He's trying to find himself I suppose. We're all looking for meaning in this world. I've thought about religion many times, but just not sure what to make of it right now.

It sounds like the original poster has been clear with the husband.
Perhaps ask him to sign a list of key points - you won't be required to change your behaviour in any way, the children will not be muslim/no circumcision, his conduct will not affect you (eg he won't wake people up during ramadan, will still come to school carol services), he will not control you more than now, he will never take an additional wife (quite are in the UK for not unknown and the Koran does allow up to 4 at once), he will not state any homophobic or sexist views at home. You can wear whatever you like including topless sunbathing, short skirts etc Might even be worth having a solicitor sign a legal "post nup" to make a few things clear too.

Thing is, you sound offended, but I don’t think atheists feel offended when their atheism is insulted.

No one has said that atheism should be thrown in the bin though

Probably because it doesn't make any sense to try and throw the absence of something in the bin. It would be like not having an apple core in your hand and trying to throw it in the bin.

Croque · 12/11/2022 19:43

@newbookonshelf My muslim friend always says to her little DC that the prophet has stated that cow's milk is a cure for all kinds of diseases. That said, there must be dairy intolerant muslims everywhere so I would consider it sensible to adapt the rules according to human evolution within reason.

You should watch the Pilgrimage series on iplayer where a group of people from different faiths follow the pilgrims' route across Europe before arriving in Istanbul. It is the better end of reality TV and very inspiring though undoubtedly, has been edited to put a positive spin on multi-faith integration.

Convenient. Have a read and report back.

Eff off I’m watching Strictly.

I must admit I haven't either. There's certainly been some gratuitous aggression, but I haven't seen any atheists being "sensitive" about insults to their lack of religion.

@DamnUserName21

As for anti-Semitism, Islam is a Semitic aka Abrahamic faith. But if you are referring to anti-Jewish sentiment in the Qu'ran, you'll find that Jews are rated fairly highly although this is open to interpretation by modern day scholars.

It refers to them as apes and pigs.

My point being is the majority of early scripture is sexist and homophobic so I do hope that you indictment of Islam also applies to other religions too.

Of course. I wouldn't tolerate sexism or homophobia of judaic or Christian origin either.

And yet in other suras, Jews are referred to 'people of the book' and accorded respect as 'believers.'

@DamnUserName21
Thats funny as Mohammed could not read or write, go and clarify your facts again.

Hi@newbookonshelf I kind of understand what you going through, in that a family member suddenly announced he was Atheist, unfortunately he was the zealous type and kept shoving it down everyone’s throat, making big announcements on Facebook, making his children watch videos that debunk God etc, his wife was distraught, was such a harrowing time but she chose to stick by him, turns out he was struggling with mental challenges after being on some meds he calmed down. Family is more united after 2yrs. I do hope you come to a place of peace, where your love for each other matters more than anything else.

Yes, which means they're not as heinous and bound for eternal damnation as polytheists, are allowed to live as second class citizens within muslim communities subject to paying an additional tax, and muslim men can marry their women (though not vice versa - funny, that).

So that's OK then.

Gosh, people are so literal. No, he couldn't read and write. That was part of the 'miracle' -that this uneducated person would have such knowledge. He recited it to his scribes at the time. It's supposedly not rewritten is my point.

The new testament was written a long time after Jesus's death-at least 50 years and has since been altered by popes/kings

scaredoff · 12/11/2022 19:58

@Squeezita

They're aggressive, towards religions and religious people. As far as I can see they're not "sensitive" in the sense of expressing personal hurt or offence at others' perceived aggression towards atheism.

I thought the Quran was written more than 100years after Mohammed died?

I go back to my original point--if you intend in indict Islam for being 'anti-semitic', you should be indicting Christianity also-who I might add provided even worse status to Jews.

Btw, under the Talmud, Jews aren't supposed to marry non-Jews either. So archaic, sexist, hypocritical rules don't just apply to Islam.

Croque · 12/11/2022 20:05

I have discussed this with an acquaintance who is a leading theologian. In his opinion, Islam and Judaism are fundamentally speaking, extremely similar although neither side would be prepared to consider the proof.

OneTC · 12/11/2022 20:08

BellePeppa · 12/11/2022 19:10

I still don’t understand why religious people feel insulted though if non believers make scathing remarks. Why the sensitivity? I doubt the god would be offended over such trifles, he’s got the dilemma of abused children to worry about.

It's just the intention behind it though, it's tiresome. Here's a thread asking for relevant input to a matter involving religion and some people are doing the equivalent of going into a thread about veganism, and posting "but bacon though"

Coyoacan · 12/11/2022 20:08

@DelphiniumBlue

You cannot understand how a faith can improve someone?

The Muslims I know spend a lot of time reading and learning about how they should be in this world.

Every religious group has its bad apples, but in general, if your community and everything you read is encouraging you to be the best you can be, that will surely have an influence.

OneTC · 12/11/2022 20:20

Againstmachine · 12/11/2022 18:04

@Squeezita

But ok for you to put all Muslims under one umbrella?

This post you put yourself under the umbrella I didnt and you put yourself under this umbrella and all religion is trash so yes it can be put under same umbrella and chucked in a bin, as no reasonable person in the 21st century should have religion.

I mean this person sounds upset about something.

You’re very bossy. I don’t think posters appreciate being told (or commanded) to ‘report back’.

Againstmachine · 12/11/2022 20:33

It's interesting people are being told to read my posts and report back, the poster who took my post as anti Islam was wrong it was anti all religion.

People don't like been told what to do, athiests don't tell people what to do, funnily enough religious people do.

Squeezita · 12/11/2022 19:53

Well I have read their posts and there is nothing there to show they get offended or upset or sensitive about having their atheism questioned. Being irritated or frustrated with religion isn’t the same as being sensitive and offended f their atheism is being mocked or derided the way religious people get offended.

I have no idea what religion you are but you seem easily offended by people who are not on the same page as you?

Thelnebriati · 12/11/2022 20:38

I want to give up alcohol anyway to be honest and don't go out with boobs on show etc. etc. etc. It's just how I am.

@newbookonshelf I don't understand, are you saying he's asked you to quit alcohol and dress modestly?

Againstmachine · 12/11/2022 20:40

@BellePeppa thank you I'm they to pint out the hypocrisy of it all

pinheadlarry · 12/11/2022 20:40

Im not an expert but i think muslim men cant be married to an atheist woman, they can marry christian jewish or muslim women but not athiest.. so i dont know where that leaves you..

Also as a muslim man he would be expected to be running a muslim household and that means eating halal, praying 5 times a day and raising his kids Muslim
So i dont see how you would be able to live together it would be too clashing
Maybe he is ignorant to this?
