Do you judge other drivers by their car make?

Since switching to an Audi, I’ve noticed people are a lot more aggressive toward me and less likely to let me out/in, thank me for stopping, let me merge etc.

I was musing about this to my friend and she said that because only wankers drive Audis/BMW’s etc.

Is this fair? We got ours just because it was the only car available at the time that matched all our needs and was in our budget!

Aibu to think this must be a popular way of thinking considering how different my experience has been on the road since the switch? I had a lovely Nissan Juke before and found most drivers in my city very considerate!

My pet hate isn't posh cars it's people who drive Japanese hatchbacks and don't bother to stay in one lane on a roundabout when they can straddle two.

Also most likely to stop suddenly because they don't know where they are going.

OldReliable · 11/11/2022 21:29

I think you're literally the only person who gives a shit why she bought an audi. Did you want an audi too but couldn't have one? Is that why you're on her case?

Ah of course the classic Mumsnet trope.

“if you criticise something, it can only be because you are jealous and cannot afford it”.

😂

You crack on with that belief. I’ll crack on with my battered car and my not so battered bank balance.

Mummy2mybear · 11/11/2022 21:33

Does anyone remember the cars with eyelashes? I have not seen one for a while but really can't understand why giant eyelashes are stuck on headlights, each to own 😂

Caterhamdriver · 11/11/2022 21:36

@Theala I drive a Dacia Duster, a Caterham, a mini convertible and an electric bicycle so don’t judge anybody. What a judgy person you are.

britsabroad · 11/11/2022 21:36

Just can't stand range rover drivers, never met one I liked. Always found them to be obnoxious, agrressive, selfish. They don't let anyone out and always try and cut you up. Woman at nursery drives one, and always parks across 2 spaces.... So noone else can park. Total knobhead. Such a status driven car. Bit like BMW drivers I find.
We have a Peugeot, could afford a flashier car but really don't care as long as it goes from a to b.

boringbrain · 11/11/2022 21:36

With Audi it depends on the style of it such as A3, Q3 etc and Q5 at a push are generally owned by decent drivers but the S/Q7 S/Q8, A5 generally are owned by people who are annoying. I had a BMW 420 gran coupe and people used to give way to me, change lanes for me :) but I used to indicate and give it way (still do obv) and used to get so many thank yous lol and hazard lights on off in case I didn't see the thank yous lol. This was surprising for me especially after being a Mini Cooper lover for many years and no one used to take me seriously, ever give way.

Anotherguy · 11/11/2022 21:37

I have 2 cars that I use routinely. Both new saloons, both very high spec but not overtly so. One is a bmw, one is a Mercedes. Both white so no garish colours etc.

I get treated far, far better when I’m driving the Mercedes. People are keen to give me room to pull out of junctions etc. In the bmw I rarely get help from other motorists. I’m a late 30’s professional male, not a boy racer etc

UneFoisAuChalet · 11/11/2022 21:38

I do judge Audi drivers. Don’t really know why but I always think ‘wanker’ when I see one. I would never get an Audi. Or an Evoque. Where I live it just screams ‘look at me and my finance car’.

I admit it’s a strange prejudice. I don’t think that of Mercia, Volvos, Lexus but Audis just rile me 🤷‍♀️

CheesenCrackersmm · 11/11/2022 21:39

No

However all drivers with 3d numberplates are complete bell ends. This is 100% reliable.

UneFoisAuChalet · 11/11/2022 21:39

Oh I also judge white cars. So 2018…🙄

Luckynumbereight · 11/11/2022 21:39

If there’s is an arsehole on the road they’re in an Audi. Fact.

ThatshallotBaby · 11/11/2022 21:39

I’ve got an ancient beaten up Audi A4, I think. I’m extra polite and always use my indicators Grin

littlepeas · 11/11/2022 21:40

UneFoisAuChalet · 11/11/2022 21:39

Oh I also judge white cars. So 2018…🙄

White is the worst colour for poor behaviour (see upthread for my mortifying assumption regarding a white BMW...).

KatherineJaneway · 11/11/2022 21:40

Neerdoneerdo · 11/11/2022 20:49

I judge people with SUVs (up themselves/status conscious and don't give a tiny toss about the environment, happy for the other car to be at much higher risk if there's any kind of accident).
I judge people with very expensive cars and/or unnecessarily large cars, and people with personalised numberplates.
I judge people whose cars spew black smoke because they don't want to pay for a service.

So I hired a car last minute for an emergency trip. It was a 4X4, only car available. So you would sit there and judge me for that 😒

pewtypie · 11/11/2022 21:41

I have the opposite. Bigger cars tend to bully me when I’m in my 1.2ltr run-around but not when I drive DH’s Audi.

I do think most BMW drivers are twats though.

MissPiggysPinkDress · 11/11/2022 21:43

k1233 · 11/11/2022 21:21

For me it's volvo drivers (those are much rarer where I am these days) and male hat drivers. Anytime there's a male wearing a hat while driving you can bet he drives like shit.

A male, hat wearing volvo driver is the worst possible combination.

torquewench · 11/11/2022 21:45

@poshjock that's probably because everyone knows that Harleys are basically tractors with 2 wheels 😜

CantStartaFireWithoutaSpark · 11/11/2022 21:45

Boooooot · 11/11/2022 20:33

This reminds me of my grandad who beeps and waves at anyone who has the same make and colour car as him 🤣

I do this too 😅😅

I judge Skoda Fabia drivers and Dacia Drivers. There is no excuse for cars like that on the road. Awful cars 😂

Boooooot · 11/11/2022 21:46

I kind of judge ssangyong drivers tbh as they’re just so ugly!

The car that is, not the driver.

TheGuv1982 · 11/11/2022 21:49

I don’t judge people by their car…but I do set my expectations on how I expect things to go

van doing 60 in a 70 on a Friday evening? Yeah they’re not going to yield for me

Old timer in a battered fiesta next to me on a roundabout? You’re absolutely right I’m fearing the worst and keeping my distance

Boy/girl racer in something making lots of noise? Im expecting the unexpected

shrunkenhead · 11/11/2022 21:54

Audi and BMW drivers. Don't even notice them until they do something dim and then a second glance at the car reinforces your opinion....I always wonder whether they are stupid/bad drivers BEFORE stepping into said car or whether it's the CAR that causes them to lose their driving ability and politeness....
I think most of these types of car are stolen, hence the bad driving and they're now heading towards the "Burberry effect".

Panjandrum123 · 11/11/2022 22:01

It’s not so much the make of the car as the driving style. Mostly men with something to prove who jink from lane to lane, seen so many near misses. And tailgating really gets on my wick.

That said I have an illogical dislike of Smart cars (why do so many really tall people drive them?) and, having driven one, I loathe Nissan Micras too.

I try to be courteous, let people out and hope somewhere along my journey they’ll do the same for me. But I’m no saint and occasionally someone does something so stupid the deserve a “salute”.

CrystalCoco · 11/11/2022 22:01

The Audi drivers in my neck of the woods are absolutely second-rate - we have a million Tesla, Range Rover, Mercedes, Porsche, Maserati, no one's looking at an Audi driver! (BMW drivers on the other-hand are the same everywhere!)

SweetPetrichor · 11/11/2022 22:03

I judge people in low end BMWs / Audis cause they are often those who have scraped together their pennies to buy one, probably can’t afford the insurance costs, all because they want to own that make. Which is just sad…to pin so much on a car make.
But generally I don’t care what people drive. I’m not a car person, all I want is something that gets me safely from A to B and is economic to run. I have an aging 13 yr old Astra…I’m sure many people look at it and think I should trade it in for something flashier but I’ve had it since new and it’s still going strong so why waste money pm a new one!

Hullabalooza · 11/11/2022 22:09

when we bought a second car as a runaround, I went from driving a fairly suave looking Mazda 6 to a bog standard fiesta. I noticed nobody gave way to me or signalled a ‘thanks’ when I was in the fiesta. People would often push out on roads with lots of parked cars and I was overtaken a lot. After 5 years of driving the Mazda it was a bit of a shocker. So yes, I think people do make assumptions about drivers from their cars.
