Do you judge other drivers by their car make?

Since switching to an Audi, I’ve noticed people are a lot more aggressive toward me and less likely to let me out/in, thank me for stopping, let me merge etc.

I was musing about this to my friend and she said that because only wankers drive Audis/BMW’s etc.

Is this fair? We got ours just because it was the only car available at the time that matched all our needs and was in our budget!

Aibu to think this must be a popular way of thinking considering how different my experience has been on the road since the switch? I had a lovely Nissan Juke before and found most drivers in my city very considerate!

I have a company car. It's recently been changed from a focus to a BMW.

People do treat me differently I have found. I don't drive it differently.

It's annoying as it's not a car I would have chosen to have

Guiltycat · 11/11/2022 20:48

I have heard the 'all audi drivers are twats' but obviously not true.

I wish to fully retain the right to roll my eyes at anyone in a white suv though, just because it's boring how many there are round here :D

CaptainThe95thRifles · 11/11/2022 20:48

It would be hard not to make judgements about people based on their choice of car - the person driving the Fiat 500 with the eyelashes probably has a different type of personality and lifestyle to the person driving the beat-up old Range Rover, or the one in the the sensible family car with family decals on the back.

So yes, I do make "judgements" about other drivers based on their cars, but I don't drive differently around them or treat them differently. I only drive differently around them if they're clearly a dick - and then I'm mostly just trying to get the hell away from them.

I can't quite remember the quote, and I think it was actually about BMW drivers, but somehow Audi drivers always make me think of it 😄🙈 -

There must be something about the particular angle of the headrest that causes it to cut off the blood supply to the brain.

I also can't quite remember who said it, I think it was either Stephen Fry or Douglas Adams.

I'm only kidding really - it's surprising how quickly you can get a feel for drivers' abilities though, just watching some drivers for a few seconds is enough to make you happy to fall right back just to get away from them.

Trulyweird1 · 11/11/2022 20:48

BMW driver here . I have had a few. Like pp, I learned to drive a long time ago and to drive courteously : let other drivers merge, move over lanes to let traffic join the road , use indicators .
I am 60, and not in a rush to prove myself.
But there is always some Audi crawling over my butt on a country road. That said, the area I live in has a lot of BMWs and Audis; very successful dealerships.

Neerdoneerdo · 11/11/2022 20:49

I judge people with SUVs (up themselves/status conscious and don't give a tiny toss about the environment, happy for the other car to be at much higher risk if there's any kind of accident).
I judge people with very expensive cars and/or unnecessarily large cars, and people with personalised numberplates.
I judge people whose cars spew black smoke because they don't want to pay for a service.

Blush that's funny!!

I was mortified 😂.

ticktocktickboom · 11/11/2022 20:50

only ones with suped up engines which make noise (teens in subaru usually)

😁

Have done the top of the range, of the top of the range Mercedes and now drive a top of the Range, Range Rover.

Im 64 and have never had as much as a parking or speeding ticket. I’m also a very polite driver.

I couldn’t care less what people think of me.

No one bankrolls me. End of.

The only problem I've ever had with being an Audi and BMW driver is having them stolen. So far two Audi's and one BMW stolen off our drive!

I was once aggressively undertaken by a white BMW X5 (very busy dual carriageway - I was in the outside lane and about to overtake - it came up very close behind me and then dashed out and back into the tiny gap that was left between me and the car I was about to overtake). I assumed it was some dickhead (because of the car+behaviour), so flashed my lights at him - he flashed his back - they were blue (unmarked police car). Whoops!

That has made me chuckle. because I would never do anything like that

A580Hojas · 11/11/2022 20:52

I don't notice car makes and know nothing about them. I just judge people for driving massive 4x4s when there's no need to.

Ze Germans need to up their security on their cars!

Lampedsomeoiks · 11/11/2022 20:53

Yes. Men in white ven.

I had a right to do with one a few weeks ago. I was on foot and crossing the road and a complete idiot white van man quickly sped out of a junction with no indicator. I, being a woman, of course had the go-to repertoire of insults that males like to sling at women.

All because he is a total idiot who is evidently too lazy to flick a plastic stick.

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 11/11/2022 20:53

Sorry but Audi and BMW drivers are the absolute worst. They're always the type to undertake, or not let you out, speed at a merging point to cut infront of you and then crawl along, see amber as the signal to speed up instead of slow down etc etc

I drive a 4x4 (so live rurally though so hopefully not too wanky) and the only hate I've received is from young men in small cars.

OrangePomander · 11/11/2022 20:53

I drive something which looks innocuous but isn’t, one if my great joys is annoying BMW and Audi drivers who try it on Grin

I have a Subaru! Most of them are extremely boring.

Perhaps in your world there isn’t a need but …………

littlepeas · 11/11/2022 20:53

And to clarify - mine is a boring one!

Try riding a motorbike. Everyone thinks you want to race them especially when they're only in their mums ancient Ford Fiesta and assumes that behind the handlebars you're a young male speed freak and not a 50 something female who gets more satisfaction pootling past a line of stationary cars queueing at traffic lights and overtaking everyone that way at under 20 mph than getting everywhere at 90 mph 😉

Agree! I ride and I always find the young lads in their corsa and fiesta want to race.
I ride a 650cc, so not the biggest - but bless their little hearts, they haven't got a chance

Also OP - I drive an audi and agree with you too

I don't tend to notice the make of cars when driving but I've heard a few people say recently that Audi drivers are as bad as, if not worse than BMW drivers for arrogance etc.

Boooooot · 11/11/2022 20:59

The unmarked police cars are all Volvos around these parts.

Interesting to get everyone’s views! I’ve had a little play in my head of all the incidences of dickheadery on the road and come to think of it it’s mostly been Mercedes drivers in my experience! (Nothing against them though I would LOVE a Mercedes!)
