AIBU for overreacting to comment by John Lewis

I was on the phone to John Lewis as they failed to deliver an item ( did not put it on their load), and as the person was processing a new delivery date he was making small talk about the reason why I was purchasing a TV. I said it was for the cricket world up, and he asked who I thought I was going to win the tournament. I replied that I am British, so am backing England. He then told me that my name does not sound British, where are my parents from?
I snapped at that point and got a bit shirty with him, as I felt it was unreasonable for him to assume I am not British just because of my surname.

OP posts:

@ShesThunderstorms - exactly, “I am British so I support England” - erm.. Scotland, Wales and NI?

Perhaps the the other reason the OP was supporting England was because England were playing.

Why is it any time BAME talk about their experiences, people bring it back to Irish aka white people?

For you to compare the racism against black and Asian with that of Irish people is just so typically white centric it's laughable. So get your head out of your own arse.

Learn some history, you are embarrassing yourself.

phishy · 11/11/2022 12:01

TheWurst · 11/11/2022 12:00

Exactly. I am disgusted by that comment, my grandparents and parent have experienced a lot of discrimination based on their accents. Apparently white = racist and immune from discrimination.

This is why black people don't talk to white people about racism.

You make it all about you and your white fragility. Care to quote my comment that you found so disgusting?

BaileySharp · 11/11/2022 12:01

It may have been meant non offensively but I can see why you would be offended! I don't think he should have asked you that. There's an element of it doesn't sound like a white name so what are you really isn't there? And that's not on.

ShesThunderstorms · 11/11/2022 12:02

@phishy not at all. Racism is very real against the BAME community and I'm not at all trying to deny that.
My comment was in response to your denial of racism towards the Irish.

Except where he said ‘He then told me that my name does not sound British, where are my parents from?’

White people refuse to see these micro aggressions because they don’t affect them.

You are assuming that everyone who doesn't think it's a big deal is white british.

Pretty racist.

Can you quote my comment where I denied racism against Irish people?

Pretty racist.

Pretty common for white people to deflect racism on to BAME people.

Butterlover1 · 11/11/2022 12:04

He's not saying you aren't british he's asking where the origins of your surname are from.

Yes, maybe worded it a bit clumsily but FFS YABU.

Yanbu its clear racism. You don't have to put up with random customer service personnel deciding that your name must mean you aren't properly British. Complain.

😂😂😂

ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave · 11/11/2022 12:05

Sorry about these clowns phishy. Some white people just can't handle not being centred in any discussion, even about racism.

Except they do. All the time.

@phishy

"But white people are much less likely to experience racism, whether you’re English or Irish.

It won't let me "officially" quote it for some reason so I've copied and posted. I'm not denying any racism, just pointing out that you might want to learn more about the racism the Irish have received. I'm not here to say hey, this group of people had it worse so that means they win! But surely you can see both sides here?

I love getting offended when people make pleasant small talk, don't you, OP? So many opportunities to take things the wrong way. It makes me glad to be alive.

Charlieiscool · 11/11/2022 12:08

How do you know what his ethnicity was on the end of a phone? You are making racist assumptions yourself. Enjoy getting offended over trivial nonsense and hopefully he’ll learn to just put people on hold rather than chat politely. What is it that you are so sensitive about, it’s hardly a big deal to chat about the origin of your name?

TakeMe2Insanity · 11/11/2022 12:08

He would have been confused with us too, we have a British name but supporting Pakistan.

But in what context are you telling me to learn about racism against Irish people? The thread isn't about Irish people. Why must you make everything white centric?

Charlieiscool · 11/11/2022 12:09

Because racism isn’t just about skin colour.

Actually it might be, the OP hasn’t said. Her surname might be O’Neill for all we know.
