David Walliams

He's on the wall of my child's school as author of the month. I just do not see the appeal - as I see it he got into writing easily, already being a celebrity, and found success as he used the same illustrator as Roald Dahl - Quentin Blake.

There have been threads in the past about him, and now this
www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2022/nov/10/david-walliams-recorded-derogatory-remarks-britains-got-talent-bgt-contestants

Basically, saying really offensive things about some BGT contestants, on mic. Of course they were going to be leaked.

A quote from Walliams from the link to what he said on stage in 2007:

'You're a big boy for 16 aren't you – that's what I'll tell the judge.'

Tubs11 · 10/11/2022 14:11

Private comments between friends? I have never had these types of convos with my friends and neither have my male friends. He is beyond digusting

Goldpaw · 10/11/2022 14:01

This man gives me the creeps in a way that other famous men in the past have been creepy.

He makes my skin crawl.

Yes . . . he gives off the same vibe to me, too.

Kiplingroad · 10/11/2022 14:12

I don't agree either with ruling out authors because they are terrible people.

Most authors are terrible people. Selfish, precious, oversensitive vultures always looking at any drama and wondering if there's a book in it.

But David Walliams is not, in my opinion, an author. He's a b-list celebrity who flogs children's books.

WeAreTheHeroes · 10/11/2022 14:14

Urgh - unprofessional and revolting. He really thinks a lot of himself doesn't he? He and Ferne McCann could be real life Twits together.

CathStjames · 10/11/2022 14:15

This is the most ridiculous thing to attack someone over.

Who hasn’t vented to a friend about someone else? Even called them a mean word

AutumnDaysConkers · 10/11/2022 14:17

I find his books have good storylines however there is a lot of 'padding'.
By that I mean lots of inane descriptions and waffling just to fill the pages. My kids get bored with it and just want the story.

AutumnDaysConkers · 10/11/2022 14:18

HamzasHairnet · 10/11/2022 10:39

Before retired from Pimary teaching,I had a Y4 class and many of them loved DW. They asked me to read one of his books to them - The beast of Buckingham Palace or something. It was the biggest pile of tripe ever. So full of filler and repeated phrases, it reminded me of the Barbara Cartland character from Little Britain.

Just saw your comment. This is exactly how I feel about his books.

I can hand on heart say I've never called or said of anyone, a c word. Nor slag, or anything like that. But to do so at work, which is where he was, is extremely unprofessional. Imagine if it was a teacher or a doctor. They'd be sacked.
Even out of work, I find such conversations repulsive and if nothing else, it's so opposite the idea of "be kind" and the kind of image he wants to paint for himself.

He’s a creep and his books are banned in our house. I hate seeing them in bookshops promoted as ‘The World of David Williams’ 🤮

If our school has him on a wall as author of the month, I would not be impressed.

Michael Morpurgo’s books are in a different class. Highly recommend them. And while I avoid celeb authors generally, the Toto series by Dermot O’Leary is very good.

No, I have nicer friends than you do, thanks

Some fantastic contributions on this thread in terms of book suggestions, thank you all.

Haven’t read the whole thread so sorry if I’m repeating this, but Quentin Blake is not the illustrator of David Walliams’ books - it’s Tony Ross.

Do give over

a doctor out of work would not be sacked for calling someone a cunt to their friend. It’s very unlikely they’d be sacked if in work considering the threshold to get medical professionals fired due to shortages

LikeTearsInRain · 10/11/2022 14:23

Many on here have always viewed him as slightly sinister and gross. I’m not surprised this has happened.

So you’ve never had someone do something to you at work that’s rubbed you the wrong way and when chatting to your friend after, a colleague, your mum said ‘urg that person was such a dick for doing this to me’ or ‘my manager was such a cunt today’

bullshit

A quote from Walliams from the link to what he said on stage in 2007:

When someone shows you who they are - as DW has done repeatedly with young people, women, black people and people with disabilities including people with learning disabilities, for example - believe them.

Blake has done two that I know of, and the style of the others is very similar. Thanks very much for pointing that out though :-)

But my point is, he said it at work. Within audio of a microphone, and he knew he was being recorded.

Whatafustercluck · 10/11/2022 14:32

I would not be at all surprised if he's eventually charged over inappropriate sexual behaviour of some kind, having read those links. Previously I've not really taken much notice of him, just thought him a bit weird/ creepy.

His books did get my ds reading though. And Mr Stink was good, and we had a good cry together at the end. I haven't read any of the others, but ds continues to enjoy them.

Sounds like a very unpleasant man though.

And?

Someone pissed him off, he called them a cunt to someone else, a friend, it was accidentally picked up by the mic

Nope. I can't agree that this is normal behaviour for a judge on BGT, a "family" show.

OP posts:
Goldpaw · 10/11/2022 14:37

How strange that he's trending for being an obnoxious individual, and I'm reading a lot about some other allegations against him that have been buried.

I wonder what they are. 🤔

LexMitior · 10/11/2022 14:38

This is no surprise- lots of unsavory stories about him.

Skinnermarink · 10/11/2022 14:38

No it wasn’t ‘accidentally’ picked up by a mic.

I used to work for the company that produces BGT as a transcriber. I had to transcribe the judges chat and connects between acts, as they used these as clips on the show. How I wish I’d leaked some of the things I heard from him.
