Eating an entire 500g tub of sweets

Is that just weird? A man in his 50s, getting through a whole box of (really sickly) jelly sweets in one go? I had one sweet on Halloween night and couldn't even manage that, it was so sickly. The kids had a couple each and didn't go back to them, so they've been just left in the cupboard. Got up to find an empty box this morning, asked dh where he'd put them, thinking possibly he'd moved them to a different container... "I ate them," he said. What would you think? I mean, it's not the world's biggest problem, but I just think it's strange...

Ah, for me it does. The first handful tastes amazing, the second starts to become compulsive rather than pleasurable, and anything after that just starts to make me queasy. The immediate sugar hit is great, but 5 seconds later my stomach feels crap and I feel a bit queasy.

coma21 · 09/11/2022 17:15

That's not weird at all. I could do that no problem

Same.

megosaurusrex · 09/11/2022 17:17

Yeah I could do that. I suspect I have done that. Relieved to see I'm not alone 👀

Happyhappyeveryday · 09/11/2022 17:20

Yes, it’s weird and greedy IMHO.

VladmirsPoutine · 09/11/2022 17:27

Threads like these often split mumsnet. Either you couldn't possibly manage a single sweet or a whole 500g tub is merely getting started.

Wheredoallthepensgo · 09/11/2022 19:40

I've got a bag of (M&S dontcha know) assorted toffees 200g in weight, they are individually wrapped and I've just counted that there's 26 in this bag.
I've had 5 and feel it's time to stop as getting that hyped feeling so very roughly 38g. That really has put 500g in perspective for me.

Doggate1 · 10/11/2022 21:34

I don’t suppose you’ve ever thought for a moment that you are the weird one to think that it is weird to eat sweets in a vast quantity! Bet it is a bundle of laughs in your house and going out to eat with you 🤣🤣🤣

neighboursmustliveon · 10/11/2022 21:40

So he has eaten them in a week? Easily done. What's that, 5 bags of haribo? I could eat one packet in one go, couldn't eat 5 or wouldn't eat 5. I've never tried to know I couldn't. I could eat 1 packet a night, so eat 5 packets in 5 days.

DanglyThings · 10/11/2022 21:47

He ate them all in the space of a couple of hours at the most. And yes I do think I'm weird about lots of things! I'll sit in the garden centre car park and listen to Radio 4 podcasts to have some time to myself. That's one thing. I'll give you that. But I work bloody hard to get all the things done that need doing at work and at home and with other responsibilities, I don't laze about on the sofa scoffing sweets that will make my already not brilliant health worse, while never bothering to brush my teeth or pick up the hoover at any point in 15 years. I've said too much.

I think you need a divorce @DanglyThings

ilovechocolate07 · 10/11/2022 22:07

I find some things too sweet that others are fine with.

emptythelitterbox · 10/11/2022 22:18

It depends on what kind they are.

Some would be inhaled while others i wouldnt touch.

CheesenCrackersmm · 10/11/2022 22:23

I wish him all the best for his diabetes goals of 2022.

Flossatops · 10/11/2022 22:28

Well I could definitely eat the whole tub, but that's why I ended up giving sweets up altogether😏Perhaps he's a fellow sugar addict? It's called 'delicious poison' for a reason!

Everyflippingusernameistaken · 10/11/2022 22:29

Kanaloa peel the fruit away and lick the stone?! Why?

Everyflippingusernameistaken · 10/11/2022 22:30

I think it's very greedy and mean to not leave any for anyone else. He needs to grow up.

Wigglywoman · 10/11/2022 22:34

It sounds like you just have issues with him in general (based on your last reply) and this isn’t really about the tub of sweets.

it sounds like you need a good communication session!

Moominfanjo · 10/11/2022 22:40

I couldn't possibly comment since I've just inhaled a 10 pack of minirolls in about 2 minutes 😜

What's the AIBU?

Exactly!

Wow, sounds like you just find him grotesque tbh. Think the sweets are the least of your problems. Sorry to say OP

DanglyThings · 10/11/2022 22:58

@DrManhattan @Newname1022 To think this is not normal behaviour for a man in his 50s

OP posts:
Dogmademedoit · 10/11/2022 22:58

My husband can do that easily-so quite normal in my house!!😂

Schlaar · 10/11/2022 22:59

YANBU. I doubt this was the first time he’s been greedy with sweets either. I wouldn’t want to be the one looking after him when he develops diabetes.

Pollypocket81 · 10/11/2022 23:00

Has he been tested for diabetes? Craving sweets could indicate blood sugar regulation problems.

Tinner01 · 10/11/2022 23:06

Wow mumsnet competitive eating has gone madder than I thought it could. Are people seriously now complaining they can’t eat a single Haribo? 🤣🤣 I’m definitely on the side of dh here, sorry op. Not sure I would eat a whole tub but I definitely could if there were no calories involved!
