Eating an entire 500g tub of sweets

Is that just weird? A man in his 50s, getting through a whole box of (really sickly) jelly sweets in one go? I had one sweet on Halloween night and couldn't even manage that, it was so sickly. The kids had a couple each and didn't go back to them, so they've been just left in the cupboard. Got up to find an empty box this morning, asked dh where he'd put them, thinking possibly he'd moved them to a different container... "I ate them," he said. What would you think? I mean, it's not the world's biggest problem, but I just think it's strange...

DH once ate a whole box (I think 36 bags) of crisps in one day... then complained his mouth was sore.

Angip3 · 09/11/2022 15:39

replace them with the sugar free ones from ALDI... if you know .. you know...

ZaZathecat · 09/11/2022 15:41

You are both unreasonable. The correct number of jelly sweets to eat is 7.

PinkSyCo · 09/11/2022 15:46

You either had that one sweet or you couldn’t manage it. Which one was it? Your DH was perhaps a bit greedy, but at least the sweets didn’t go to waste and your kids are a bit weird.

TomTraubertsBlues · 09/11/2022 15:48

Only on MN could a full-on binge be described as "perhaps a bit greedy"! 😂

I know lots of people do it, and I eat too many sweets myself, but let's call it what it was - eating 500g of jelly sweets is a binge.

TeslasPigeon · 09/11/2022 15:54

Admittedly there are only 450g in here, but look! They're fruit and vegan, so they're practically health food*. (I have to hide them or I WOULD eat them all in one go).
*This is a joke.

Binge eating often has a compulsive element (because eating that amount stops being enjoyable), and is a recognised eating disorder. So I guess the question is whether he does this regularly?

As a one off, I wouldn't be concerned, but if it was more frequent I definitely would.

SallyWD · 09/11/2022 15:58

I think 500g of sweets is a hell of a lot! I think it would be about 2500 calories (so the daily amount for a man) but worse than that, it's an insane amount of sugar. I'd probably go in to a hyperglycemic coma if I had all that sugar. My husband has a terrible sweet tooth but even he couldn't manage 500g of sugar. I'd be amazed if he could eat more than 100g of sugar.

Qwertyyui · 09/11/2022 16:02

I could easily do that. I love sweets. I cannot buy big 1kg bags in as I cannot portion them and therefore eat them in a few sittings. I am all about the sugar!

kateluvscats · 09/11/2022 16:03

Their poor pancreas

Wishimaywishimight · 09/11/2022 16:11

Meh, big deal. I find it slightly stranger that you couldn't even manage one sweet though!

jays · 09/11/2022 16:15

You couldn’t manage one sweet. Oh bore off!

LuckySantangelo35 · 09/11/2022 16:19

Oh get a grip even a doctor would tell you as an occasional one off it’s fine unless an underlying health issue.

Aged 11 a friend’s parents used tobe gifted large boxesof luxury chocolates.
We were allowed free access.
After the first 5, they became less enjoyable.
We pigged ourselves almost sick on them.
It was horrible.
We both lay groaning, heads in arms, nauseated to hell.

Oaky, this post has got ALL the words!

I feel your nausea

You sound just like my mother. If she wasn't six years dead, I'd be suspicious.

It's still a binge though. A one-off binge isn't something to be too concerned about, but it is what it is.

CambsAlways · 09/11/2022 16:45

Pinkroom · 09/11/2022 12:35

I had one sweet and could even manage that.. 😂only on mumsnet

I licked a sweet and was nauseous for a week. Had to jog 5 miles to feel better.

BobbyBobbyBobby · 09/11/2022 16:52

My daughter gave me a small pack of vegan jelly sweets. They were tiny and no more than around twenty in the little pack. I ate them and within two hours I had awful stomach cramps. Never again.

Hopw your husband is ok.

ChocolateCakeYum · 09/11/2022 16:55

Eh whatever. It happens and we’ve all pigged out on things occasionally.

As a one off I don’t see the issue.

TomTraubertsBlues · 09/11/2022 16:56

Chesterdrawsseriously · 09/11/2022 16:33

I'm just shocked by how many people seem to see bingeing as normal.

Genuinely, if I ate 500g of sweets, my DH would be really shocked. And I have a sweet tooth!

AloysiusBear · 09/11/2022 16:59

All sweets are sugary thats the point.

Many people love and are addicted sugar

As a one-off, it definitely doesn’t stop being enjoyable.
