Eating an entire 500g tub of sweets

Is that just weird? A man in his 50s, getting through a whole box of (really sickly) jelly sweets in one go? I had one sweet on Halloween night and couldn't even manage that, it was so sickly. The kids had a couple each and didn't go back to them, so they've been just left in the cupboard. Got up to find an empty box this morning, asked dh where he'd put them, thinking possibly he'd moved them to a different container... "I ate them," he said. What would you think? I mean, it's not the world's biggest problem, but I just think it's strange...

I would imagine he’d have the shits after all that sugar!

DanglyThings · 09/11/2022 14:48

@Iamacatslave Well, this is one of his problems generally, which make it seem all the more unwise to binge a load of sweets...

I came on to say the same as @IHeartGeneHunt. I could eat a box quite easily

mummatam · 09/11/2022 14:51

My husband eats an entire tube of pringles in a day... I used to think that was weird because before meeting him, a pringles tube could go a few weeks without being finished! Finishing large amounts/multipacks no longer fazes me 🤣

all this thread has done is make me want some sweets

I just bought a packet from Pharmacy thanks to this thread!
honey and lemon- yum!

You’re missing the obvious solution to the problem.

I keep looking at the Christmas tubs of Celebrations and Roses, very tempting to open them and have 'just a couple'but I know it never works like that and I'm determined to buy no more before Christmas.

Haribosweets · 09/11/2022 15:07

I could absolutely 💯 eat that amount and probably more in less than a couple of hours! Love love sweets hence the username!

pinheadlarry · 09/11/2022 15:11

Yes it is weird for a grown man to consume a whole box of sweets
Does he lack self control or he has cravings and lacking something in his diet ?..

On the loo brush one; I had a MN discussion with someone who proclaimed how awful a loo brush was and that a loo brush should not be necessary. Through the conversation we worked out that she was in a soft water area and I was in a very hard water area.

In a soft water area a loo brush may not be necessary because the porcelain remains shiny smooth. In a hard water area the water leaves a deposit making the porcelain less shiny smooth so loo brush may well be necessary.

It made me feel better about keeping a loo brush!

I always thought there was a belief among certain Mumsnetters that if one simply lived properly, then one’s shite would not adhere to one’s loo, and therefore nothing so ghastly as a toilet brush need be required.

ChangedmynameagainforChristmas · 09/11/2022 15:20

I just came on to ask is this The greedy Husband troll?

Ourlittleharmonica · 09/11/2022 15:21

No, it's not weird.
What would I think? "Great, I'm delighted he ate them so now the kids won't be picking at them".

Mind your own business 🙂

You made me laugh @Herejustforthisone 🤭
Although it triggered my pelvic girdle pain 🤕

As a teen I could 'zone out' and eat a whole tub in one go easily and regularly did.

Surely 'sickly' is subjective too. I could eat a whole thing of Jelly or Laces but a couple of small chocolates would be too much.

OwwwMuuuum · 09/11/2022 15:26

Lol. I could happily smash that. I bet OP is a size eight who just can’t put weight on, no matter what she eats (giggle, blonde ponytail flip) urgh

JockTamsonsBairns · 09/11/2022 15:26

Eating an entire 500g tub of sweets is a lot, of course it is. But, context is everything here. If he was sitting engrossed in a film, mindlessly eating one after another, then I suppose it can happen. As an isolated incident, it's not really worth getting het up over.
If it was a regular thing, then that would be concerning.

Like you, Op, I don't eat those jelly type sweets. I feel like I keep chewing and chewing, as if I've got a mouthful of rubber bands in my mouth, and they don't disintegrate enough for me to swallow them. I do have a couple of gaps in my back teeth, so that's probably why.

A twin pack of Jaffa Cakes on the other hand... 😂

Chesterdrawsseriously · 09/11/2022 15:30

Loving the posters manically arguing about what she says, like it makes a difference, who cares, full or sick either way eating one Haribo and being unable to eat all day after it is clearly abnormal if the op is intolerant to something it would need to be extreme , be it gelatine or sugar or colouring and she’d have it with other foods. It is not normal to eat one tiny sweet and then not be able to eat all day due to it.

it’s like another world on here where some posters are trying to argue that that’s somewhat normal 😂

My Dh has just eaten 1/2 a home made cake. It was there…. and then it wasn’t🤔

Hes not particularly greedy.

NortieTortie · 09/11/2022 15:34

I couldn't do a 500g tub of sweets.

500g of crisps - I'd give it a good go! Although my fave is salt and vinegar so I prob wouldn't have a tongue left

Chesterdrawsseriously · 09/11/2022 15:34

Are you really going around your office and on line and asking if your husband is weird, telling everyone his health problems and what he has eaten, I’d be fucking furious if my husband was doing that to me. And I suspect if the genders were reversed more people would tell you to stop being so ludicrous.

he’s a grown up. Stop gossiping about him. He can eat what he wants. You can’t eat the sweets, they make you feel sick apparently for a full day and your kids don’t want them, which makes me wonder why you were actually looking for them, knew exactly how much was there last night and then went looking for them first thing this morning.

ehb102 · 09/11/2022 15:36

500g of sugary sweets is 2000 calories, possibly a bit less. Easy enough to eat if you start before a meal and spoil your supper. It is on the high side so I suspect some element of compulsion.

SleeplessinSouthwold · 09/11/2022 15:36

Maybe you could enter your DH in an eating contest OP? Test his limits and maybe make a buck? Get him his own youtube channel, for people who enjoy watching others eat? There must be a silver lining somewhere.
(that loo brush, though)

georgarina · 09/11/2022 15:37

I think 500g of sweets is crazy to eat at one time, and I'm definitely not a competitive undereater

Granted I have PCOS and don't handle sugar well, but more than about 5-10 sweets and I would be feeling really ill/fall asleep.
