Eating an entire 500g tub of sweets

Is that just weird? A man in his 50s, getting through a whole box of (really sickly) jelly sweets in one go? I had one sweet on Halloween night and couldn't even manage that, it was so sickly. The kids had a couple each and didn't go back to them, so they've been just left in the cupboard. Got up to find an empty box this morning, asked dh where he'd put them, thinking possibly he'd moved them to a different container... "I ate them," he said. What would you think? I mean, it's not the world's biggest problem, but I just think it's strange...

He's had a test for diabetes before but it was negative. I'm convinced he is diabetic though, he has all the signs, but even if he was I don't think it would change his habits. It's not just sweets though, he would buy two packs of salmon of it was reduced (from £4.20 to £3.80 ffs, but that's another story) and he'll cook the whole lot and just eat that on its own, where other people would make a meal with other things. Or he'll eat the last three packets of crisps, knowing fine well that ds14 needs a packet in his packed lunch the next day....

It's sounding like an eating disorder, or something similar. I don't know what exactly, but if there's also an element of not being able to resist reduced food, even when you don't need it and the reduction is negligible, or not being able to resist three servings of something when your son will need one the next day...on top of the excessive sugar, it does sound as though something is going on mentally.

It is quite a lot, and I can pack them away? Was it a really cheap nasty version, because that would make it harder to eat. Heroes or celebrations, a whole tub is a lot. Swizzels Sweet Shop Favourites?

He was blasé about it though, which is interesting.

Please don't joke about the diabetes though, because if he did have it, undiagnosed, his blood sugars would be so high he'd be ill, and NOT eating sweets.

I had one sweet and could even manage that.. 😂only on mumsnet

I know, I had an eye roll at that too!

Half kilo of sugar? That's a bit much. However, I could quite happily eat a whole family sized cake without effort. So I don't buy any.

Spookysparkles · 13/11/2022 22:58

Yeah I could do that, which is why I don’t keep too many sweets in the house - super sweet tooth over here so can’t resist them, other half is even worse than me!

That's like a pound of sweets which is a lot. Very unhealthy.

AutumnCrow · 13/11/2022 23:04

Eating his own kid's lunchbox crisps for the next day is pretty poor behaviour.

Not even Tangfastics though, which are the decent quality ones, these were horrible cheap things! I know I'm digging myself further in lol. And no I do not faint in McDonalds! I have a very healthy appetite and eat like a horse. Just to prove I'm a normal human, today I'll have a sausage and has brown bap for breakfast at work, a few biscuits with my cup of tea at break time, possibly a Macdonald's for dinner as I'm rushing off to the hairdresser's this afternoon, a few more biscuits when I get home with the kids, chicken pasta and veg for tea, and probably toast and cereal before bed. I think that's reasonably normal. Whereas dh lives on pot noodles, crisps and frozen pizza and doesn't go near a vegetable or fruit. Never mind the sweet binges!

From that it doesn't sound like you go near fruit or veg much either! On your example here that would be only one portion of veg in an entire day.
Maybe you need to cut the biscuits down and have something more healthy to be a better model for your kids, as it sounds like Dad certainly isn't.

@Wheredoallthepensgo That was a Friday rush job of a day. I do normally get my five a day. Just trying to prove to some of those up thread I'm not a pony tail flipping salad muncher 😅
