Eating an entire 500g tub of sweets

Is that just weird? A man in his 50s, getting through a whole box of (really sickly) jelly sweets in one go? I had one sweet on Halloween night and couldn't even manage that, it was so sickly. The kids had a couple each and didn't go back to them, so they've been just left in the cupboard. Got up to find an empty box this morning, asked dh where he'd put them, thinking possibly he'd moved them to a different container... "I ate them," he said. What would you think? I mean, it's not the world's biggest problem, but I just think it's strange...

OP posts:

If he is diabetic then I'd worry, otherwise I would just start worrying about the dental bill.

BitOutOfPractice · 09/11/2022 13:33

You feel full for the rest of the day after half a sweet? C'mon!

I think there's only one weirdo sweet-wise in your relationship.

I mean, I'm not a sweets fan (I could eat my entire body weight in crisps!) but even I could choke down a bag of sweets.

She said she'd feel ill, not full.
Not wanting to eat because you feel sick.

MyRiverThee · 09/11/2022 13:36

Cigarettesaftersex1 · 09/11/2022 13:33

OP never once said she was full from one sweet

She said,

‘Honestly, if I eat one sweet, I feel like I couldn't eat for the rest of the day.’

DanglyThings · 09/11/2022 12:44

Ok, it's me then. No problem, thanks for the replies. I do agree I'm a weirdo for not being able to eat a whole one of those sugary pair of cherries things 😅

@DanglyThings

Late to the party so to speak but my husband could easily do this. I could never.

The only reason I mention this and why it triggered me is that my husband is an overeater, in therapy for disordered eating and on a waiting list for bariactric surgery.

Finding an empty tub like that would really upset me because I would be so worried he was relapsing / harming himself.

I guess you have to consider the overall eating pattern.

for me YANBU at all.

IncompleteSenten · 09/11/2022 13:37

"Honestly, if I eat one sweet, I feel like I couldn't eat for the rest of the day. They make me feel ill. Even the smell of them. Maybe I've just got some kind of intolerance...."

Is the full quote.

AlmostOver22 · 09/11/2022 13:37

People are being harsh. HALF A KILO of nothing but sugar and e numbers is not a normal thing to eat. Most people would be able to predict feeling sick after that and would therefore stop. Even 100g of sweets is enough to make lots of people a bit sugar sick.

luxxlisbon · 09/11/2022 13:38

You couldn’t eat ONE WHOLE SWEET?

Peak mumsnet.

Cigarettesaftersex1 · 09/11/2022 13:38

APurpleSquirrel · 09/11/2022 13:35

@Cigarettesaftersex1 this is what she said:

Honestly, if I eat one sweet, I feel like I couldn't eat for the rest of the day.

Yes I know what she said but she never said she was full, she clarified it later saying that they made her feel sick

I have thanks.

Are you the OP? You’re weirdly defensive of her.

FallopianTubeTrain · 09/11/2022 13:41

I had one sweet on Halloween night and couldn't even manage that, it was so sickly.

Never mind that, how much of a tin of soup can you get through?

slowquickstep · 09/11/2022 13:42

Halloween was 9 days ago, so i don't see why you are are bothered.

Tessabelle74 · 09/11/2022 13:44

I can do that easily! I can't eat smelly cheese, maybe I should start a thread? 🙄

Mummieslncorporated · 09/11/2022 13:44

DanglyThings · 09/11/2022 13:28

The tub was still full at 11pm last night, and empty at 7am this morning. I'm aware I sound nitpickingly crazy, but just giving the details for clarity 😆

So if you aren't eating them and your kids aren't eating them - why were you checking how full the tub was?

SusanPerbCallMeSue · 09/11/2022 13:44

YABU to not say what sort of sweets they are. If they are haribo I'd eat a couple and then be satisfied, as I'm not keen. If they are love hearts/refreshers I would eat a ton of them, same with drumstick lollies. If they were Parma violets then they should be made illegal and sent to hell.

AutumnCrow · 09/11/2022 13:45

I'm here to defend the OP.

If I ate one of those sweets I'd be buggered all day because yes, @DanglyThings, it probably IS an intolerance. You can buy 'free from everything' sweets at health stores and similar bohemian shops but be warned - they don't all taste great.

OTOH if no-one else wanted the tub of crap then why not let your DP use his body as a dustbin? It's his choice really.

SusanPerbCallMeSue · 09/11/2022 13:46

Oops, I see you say they are jelly sweets. Depends on the type - fruit pastilles or wine gums, yay. Haribo, no.

AutumnCrow · 09/11/2022 13:47

Tessabelle74 · 09/11/2022 13:44

I'm sure someone did once. Something about eating bishop's knobstink at Xmas with the in-laws.

Redkettle · 09/11/2022 13:47

I can't eat sweets either. If it was chocolate different story

CocoLux · 09/11/2022 13:48

YABU.

IncompleteSenten · 09/11/2022 13:48

That reminds me of the poster who ate 48 creme eggs. I can't remember who it was.

Some people got genuinely angry about it. It was hilarious!

SmallPrawnEnergy · 09/11/2022 13:48

MyRiverThee · 09/11/2022 13:36

She said,

‘Honestly, if I eat one sweet, I feel like I couldn't eat for the rest of the day.’

Why do people cherry pick posts?

Honestly, if I eat one sweet, I feel like I couldn't eat for the rest of the day. They make me feel ill.

It makes you look like you don’t have any basic comprehension skills, or are grasping at straws to pile on to OP.

AutumnCrow · 09/11/2022 13:49

OP has already said: I do agree I'm a weirdo for not being able to eat a whole one of those sugary pair of cherries things Grin

I think she's being a good sport tbh.

kateandme · 09/11/2022 13:49

Was your the chicken shaped one though op?

GoldIsMyChosenMetal · 09/11/2022 13:54

Half a kilo of sweets would not do my insides much good.
You’ve all guts made of iron.
It does seem odd for anyone to eat so many to me, I can understand eating for the flavour but not to actually fill you up with a big glob of gelatine and chemicals for your body to digest. Makes me queasy to think about. But each to their own!
