Come to mine for a 'cuppa'
Do you want a 'cuppa'
Have a 'cuppa'
While we have a 'cuppa'
Urgh

Probably unreasonable, but I just bloody hate it

I hate "a coffee" too! No idea why, it just really grates on me.

”A coffee” does not bother me at all, any more than “a drink” would.

Lizzy1980 · 09/11/2022 09:21

Can’t bear roasties or veg but the worst has to be veggies 🤮

ClaryFairchild · 09/11/2022 09:45

Good God, why are you all hanging out in AIBU instead of Pedant's Corner??

Lots of terms I don't use or only use in certain company - as an Aussie who lived in the UK for nearly 2 decades I've acquired quite the mish mash of words/phrases and pronunciations. Couldn't give a toss if someone was sat in the corner "cringing". Actually it would probably make me pull out all sorts of phrases just to piss them off.

CherryLongIsland · 09/11/2022 10:15

Brew sounds pleasing to me, it's friendly.

Meds is the one that everyone seems to use and I cannot stand.

I also really dislike it when people shorten car names, Landy, Disco etc same with dog breeds.

lovelilies · 09/11/2022 10:21

Cuppa is painful. I can't bring myself to say it. I do however say brew, but I'm an ex Squaddie and it's an Army term to you can all piss off slagging my brews off WinkBrew

BlueKaftan · 09/11/2022 10:28

A hot drink as in “does anyone want a hot drink?”

I do, however, reserve the right to ask my cat, using a baby voice, if she would like a “little bite to eat “ 😂

loveyourshoes · 09/11/2022 10:29

Not if you find yourself distraught and some kind soul offers to bring you tea.
YABU.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 09/11/2022 10:30

"Picky bits" turns my stomach tbh.

Spag bol.

For some reason I imagine that people who shorten all these words have signs that say live laugh love

They do.

Comefromaway · 09/11/2022 10:31

I say cuppa all the time.

Dje wanna cuppa? Shalla stick ke'uhl on? It's just how we speak round here.

AlwaysLatte · 09/11/2022 10:34

Aw I love "cuppa" - makes me feel really cozy
Cozy? 🤯

Conkersareback · 09/11/2022 10:34

YANBU

AlwaysLatte · 09/11/2022 10:35

'Meal'. Ugh
But that's a normal, proper word.

Loodally · 09/11/2022 10:37

YANBU. Also:
Brew
Butty
Sarnie
Hubby
Wifey
And 'Corrie' for Coronation Street. Sets my teeth on edge!

AlwaysLatte · 09/11/2022 10:38

Sarnie, prezzie, spuds and telly are some of the worse ones!

Comefromaway · 09/11/2022 10:38

Aw I love "cuppa" - makes me feel really cozy
Cozy? 🤯

I understand that. It takes me back to visiting my friend's house, a small, cramped terrace with too many animals but her mum was always so friendly and welcoming and always had the kettle on. It was just cozy and comfortable.

Comefromaway · 09/11/2022 10:49

And we'll 'av a rate chinwag over are cuppa

Fattoushi · 09/11/2022 10:51

"cuppa" puts you straight on my shovel list. Even once.

MintyGreenDreams · 09/11/2022 10:53

Brew ad cuppa are totally normal words to say in my area

Davethecat2000 · 09/11/2022 10:55

Jacket spud
Cauli
Meal
Cherry Toms

Can all get to fuck

Imissmoominmama · 09/11/2022 11:00

I love a butty, brew and biccy with my hubby…

HoppingPavlova · 09/11/2022 11:07

I hate the word cuppa and most shortened forms of words. Telly, brolly, hollibobs, prezzy. Ugh. They're awful

Never, ever visit Australia. That’s our vernacular 🤣.

Want2beme · 09/11/2022 11:08

Righthandcider · 08/11/2022 20:43

I thought it was just me.

Also "a bite to eat".

Both of these have a skin crawling effect on meGrin

So, how do you ask someone if they'd like a cup of tea? Saying "Would you like a cup of tea?", feels starchy. I've actually relented & now ask, "Would you like a cuppa tea?", or just "Cuppa tea?".

Why are these sorts of threads coming up every day at the moment? You can't control what language people use. Get over it.

And you can't control who posts what

Get over it
