Come to mine for a 'cuppa'
Do you want a 'cuppa'
Have a 'cuppa'
While we have a 'cuppa'
Urgh

Probably unreasonable, but I just bloody hate it

Shall we have a cuppa after our jacket spuds with a side of cherry toms? Or maybe instead some roasties and Yorkies and veg, then a nice cuppa.

(It’s often a “nice” cuppa, as though the rest of us drink horrible tea.)

Lol, so true.

Lippy literally gives me the rage.

FrightfullyFreezy · 09/11/2022 03:44

Wow. I might just have to take a vow of silence because I say quite a few of the words mentioned on here:

✔Cuppa (and a cup o' tea)
✔Brew
✔Choccies
✔Coffee shop (it's a shop that sells coffee. What else can you call it?)
✔Sarnie
✔Butty
✔Spud

These are all words that I use quite regularly!

HelpMeGetThrough · 09/11/2022 03:56

Also "a bite to eat".

Can I add to that....

"A spot of lunch".

Liorae · 09/11/2022 04:18

Schmeeeee · 08/11/2022 19:30

I hate the word cuppa and most shortened forms of words. Telly, brolly, hollibobs, prezzy. Ugh. They're awful

Sarnie, Lippincott, cheeky glass of wine.

Liorae · 09/11/2022 04:19

Lippie though I rather like that autocorrect!

GlassDeli · 09/11/2022 06:02

I'm not fussy and will take a cuppa or a brew any time. I can understand it sounding contrived if someone is trying too hard to put across a casual, working class or northern image, when that isn't who they are. It's homely and friendly when said genuinely though.

chocopuffs · 09/11/2022 06:05

Haha actually @ShaunaTheSheep you've reminded me that I hate the plural "coffees and teas" too. I don't particularly like "a round of teas" either. And I dislike "cuppa" too. No wonder no one ever invites me over 😂

Thepeopleversuswork · 09/11/2022 06:16

Agree. Twee and awful. Pretty sure it was invented by marketing people as well.

For me it depends how contrived it is. Words that are very routinely used such as telly I can’t get upset about. Is easier to say it than to avoid it.

Hollibobs however makes me die inside. Utterly cringeworthy.

I wouldn’t really link the two. You have to go out of your way to say “hollibobs”. No one ever said it by default.

Rolypolyup · 09/11/2022 07:28

I hate these threads because these words are generally just from local areas or a regional thing and you're basically taking the mick about how someone speaks. I don't say cuppa but know people who do and it's just the way they speak.

I agree with this. Most if not all of the people I know use many of these words and phrases. In Yorkshire, or at least the area of Yorkshire in which I live, the word "of" is shortened so we end up saying things like, "A cup o' tea," or, "a plate o' biscuits," and it sounds normal.

RambamThankyouMam · 09/11/2022 08:18

"Having a brew" brings me out in a sweat of rage.

Brewing is for beer.

WishfulWanda · 09/11/2022 08:20

Full of cold (especially when cold is pronounced code)

Tommy K for ketchup

Tubbyinthehottub · 09/11/2022 08:23

Cuppa is one of my worst ever "words". Brew is fine though

blackheartsgirl · 09/11/2022 08:23

Butty is a very commonly used word for sandwich in my area. If you use the word sandwich you’re posh apparently

threegoodthings · 09/11/2022 08:27

Spag bol.

For some reason I imagine that people who shorten all these words have signs that say live laugh love

GetUpTheyStair · 09/11/2022 08:32

HelpMeGetThrough · 09/11/2022 03:56

A "light bite." I actually dumped someone once for saying that (not just that but that didn't help). It took me back to when the now defunct City Bakeries chain had cafes called The Light Bite. Going there with my mum as a teenager used to give me a full-on body cringe.

LadyApplejack · 08/11/2022 19:46

Omg yes this is my most hated word! It's so annoying! More so when it's an FB status like "cake and cuppa with this one" 🤢🤢

Yes that would annoy me but more because I can't imagine why anyone but be interested in the fact that this person is having cake.and coffee with a friend/significant other

Oh and BTW " significant other" is a phrase I can't stand 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Harebrain · 09/11/2022 08:57

I’ve voted YABU because I’m off for a cuppa with a friend this morning. I could have invited her for a hot beverage but a cuppa sounds much friendlier and fun. 🤣

I thought I hated “spag bol” (and I do!) but then I heard something even worse…

“Spag bog”

WHY?!!

CloudPop · 09/11/2022 09:05

Cuppa. Jacket. Roasties. Meal.

Unreasonable yes. But I agree with everyone, really irritating terms.

Costacoffeeplease · 09/11/2022 09:07

Brew, cuppa, hubby/hubs, bubba/bubs 🤮

Youkilledmyfatherpreparetodie · 09/11/2022 09:07

YANBU. Up there with pressie instead of present.

KimberleyClark · 09/11/2022 09:10

The phrase “birth control” gives me the ick. It’s conception control, unless you are terminating a pregnancy.

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 09/11/2022 09:10

stuntbubbles · 08/11/2022 16:56

May I also add “a brew” to the hate list?

And this one may be personal to me but “a coffee” rather than “coffee”. Can’t stand it.

I hate "a coffee" too! No idea why, it just really grates on me.
