I just wish there was a fair crack for all our sons and daughters to get theses opportunities 🤢

What does your son actually do? Any local/regional media experience? Volunteering? Internships?

what has he tried?

you’re right that a cold application to present the One show is unlikely to be successful - that applies regardless of who your dad is

you’re also right that having a famous parent undoubtedly unlocks doors

you’re wrong to insist that success is impossible without a famous parent

All good questions. Film / TV/ Media/ Music - hard to get into but not impossible.

I worked in the music industry for a huge name with no family connections. Takes hard work and no one likes bitterness OP.

Tinner01 · 07/11/2022 20:13

Agree with @YellowAndGreenToBeSeen it is normal for your first job to be with family members/mates/parents colleagues!!!

Yep look at King Charles bet he only got to be monarch because his mum was one 😡

Bloody long apprenticeship though.

Brooklyn Beckham is a good example of the limits of nepotism.

he’s tried everything and nothing actually been ….. successful - has it?

I see him as being more like Marie Antoinette playing at being a shepherdess. He’s a millionaire married to a billionaire’s daughter, he doesn’t need to work, it’s just a hobby for him, so he loses interest after a few weeks. He occasionally has a new whim, and mummy and daddy pick up the phone to make it happen. Like the grown up version of a trip to Kidzania.

Just like MA wasn’t putting any agricultural workers out of a job, I don’t think any photographers or sous chefs need to worry about their livelihoods either.

Fancylike · 07/11/2022 20:13

Can’t believe people think Brooklyn Beckham has no talent, when he’s been responsible for art like this 😤

This is what Julie Burchill says all the time. There is no way a working class kid with no connections could make it in the media today.

I’m a freakin’ broken record over ‘ere 😂.

OP, get your son to DM me his CV.

Letsjumpthebroomstick · 07/11/2022 20:15

Auld creep John Peel's son is a DJ on Radio 6 - Tom Ravenscroft as well. ( Funny how because he died and was an Indie boy fan , his dodgy past was all forgiven - the dad that is ).

Christine Lampard has a famous hubby though😉

Christine Lampard met her now husband when she was the presenter of the one show not the other way round.

I think John Peel will be less revered in years to come. He's becoming remembered for his unpleasant fixation on schoolgirls, as well as his fascination with unknown indie bands.

Don't be ridiculous. If your son is mega talented he will make it. Lots of sons and daughters of famous people have tried and failed at being actors etc if they are not talented.

And lots of children of famous parents ‘make it’ without a shred of talent.

Are you in charge of hiring and firing in a showbiz capacity or just giving CV advice?

KatherineJaneway · 07/11/2022 20:19

@Neapolitanicecream What is it your son or daughter wants to do exactly? What avenues has he / she tried?

Bluekerfuffle · 07/11/2022 20:20

I wish they would give ordinary people a go on game shows again. All of them became celebrity only shows for some reason, apart from who wants to be a millionaire andthe seedy love island.

If you mean, long and successful careers - who?

NowThatsWhatICall22 · 07/11/2022 20:23

Neapolitanicecream · 07/11/2022 19:22

thousands apply for the basic roles impossible to get your foot in the door when you’re up against famous dads

No, you’re missing the point here- that particular presenter is talented and has a successful track record of presenting, having a famous dad is not opening any doors if you have no specific talent. One of those children ‘without portfolio’ has been mentioned above. Now that’s nepotism. See also, other footballers children.

Is this personal because your son has specifically applied/auditioned to be a One Show presenter, but with no success so far?

Raddix · 07/11/2022 20:23

This happens in all industries. You just don’t see it because it’s behind closed doors. Loads of parents hand their kids a director job in the family business and eventually hand them the company on a plate, or give them huge amounts of money to start a business and assist them in running it. I could list half a dozen I know personally.

Mummieslncorporated · 07/11/2022 19:23

Do you really think everyone working in TV and radio has a famous dad? 🤣

No but a bet a good few have had a good dollop of influential parental help.
I’ve said this before but kids from my local, very well known, “creative” private school where discussing their year 10 work experience. Most in TV and I particularly enjoyed overhearing them talk about working at MTV. How were our comp kids going to compete with kids with actual TV experience before 16?
Maybe their mums and dads aren’t famous in tv or radio but no doubt being famous in their field with a wedge of cash helps no end. Talent has very little to do with it.

wordler · 07/11/2022 20:24

I'm pretty sure Roman Kemp got a lot of opportunities because of his parents and who they know. However look at his CV - looks like he's worked hard and tried a lot of different things - acting, writing, producing, voice overs etc before radio and TV presenting.

He got a semi-graveyard slot at Capital FM at 21 (that's definitely due to connections) but if he hadn't been good at it, that would have been it - looks like he worked his way up over the next eight years at Capital getting a better time slot each couple of years and then finally after 8 years his agent has got him a TV gig.

He's the opposite of Brooklyn Beckham who seems to dabble in a variety of different things without any training or putting several years of graft in and then gives up and tries something else.

If your son really wants to get on in media (and you haven't yet said what his passion/skill set is) he needs to start building up a portfolio of work - get contacts and work around the outskirts of his dream job while circling into it.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 07/11/2022 20:27

How do you think Zoe Ball got her job? Or Fern Britton? Michael Douglas? Drew Barrymore? Nepotism is not a new concept, and (sadly) will always be there.

Georgeskitchen · 07/11/2022 19:26

Christine Bleakley was a famous presenter from NI before she met Frank. In fact he was probably quite star stuck by her because she was already a well-established presenter in her own right, with a good career and very attractive.

Michael Douglas and Drew Barrymore may have famous family but they are super talented in their own right.
