I just wish there was a fair crack for all our sons and daughters to get theses opportunities 🤢

We only know about TV/film nepotism because it's so visible.

It's everywhere, all the time. My friend is a partner at her dad's law firm. A friend's son will almost certainly have a brilliant career in his parent's architecture company.

If any of my kids eventually show a talent for my work, I might even hire them 😂

SeasonaIVag · 07/11/2022 19:58

Brooklyn Beckham is a good example of the limits of nepotism.

he’s tried everything and nothing actually been ….. successful - has it?

thebestcestmoi · 07/11/2022 19:58

Yep look at King Charles bet he only got to be monarch because his mum was one 😡

Unfair. He's a famous chef.

This month.

BeingHeldAtHunPoint · 07/11/2022 20:00

@Georgeskitchen they only got together after she had already been presenting for years.

Yeah, and Camilla only became Queen (consort) because of who her husband is! Shocking.

Thelnebriati · 07/11/2022 20:00

Nepotism is being given a job because of your contacts, not your abilities. Just having contacts in a business isn't nepotism.

wordler · 07/11/2022 20:01

Also, people keep saying 'BBC' as if it's one thing. It's a massive company with thousands of employees both on air (in many different genres) and off air making the programmes get to air. About 20,000 members of staff across all the different departments including the commercial branches.

And if you are talking about light entertainment or TV presenting or programme hosting, lots of the BBC output now is pitched and provided by independent production companies so you'd get employed by one of these first and then your show might end up on the BBC.

Or are you talking about news?
Or children's entertainment?
Or regional broadcasting?
BBC drama
BBC Earth

If your son wants to be on screen on the BBC then his best bet is building up a portfolio of work and experience with other broadcasters and streaming services and get a good agent to help him pitch himself to producers.

But you haven't specified what area he wants to work in. You've got to be a lot more specific than just 'on TV'.

25 years ago things were VERY different in the media world. Not so easy now.

Yeah, so different 20-25 years ago when Zoe Ball had a prime time presenting job, Sophie Ellis Bexter was starting her pop career, Miquita Oliver started out on channel 4, and Stella McCartney launched her label

Megan McCubbin.

wouldn’t have got a look in if step dad wasn’t Chris Packham. And now she is everywhere, leaving fewer opportunities for hardworking presenters who don’t have famous relations.

Because the BBC never employs, young, attractive people with Zoology degrees?

roarfeckingroarr · 07/11/2022 20:02

Moan moan moan
Life's so unfair

Mumsnet used to be quite entertaining

I feel like Lila moss is a lovely looking girl but I see girls who are similarly attractive going into our local sixth form college every day. Whether they want to be models or not I don’t know but I feel like if Lila was brought up in Doncaster or some place similar and her mum and dad were a nurse and a window cleaner she probably wouldn’t be successful

Models’ dc are often a good example of this

I think it feels more annoying because it's so visible and well paid but would you start a thread if your DC's friend got a job in their Dad's hair salon or their Auntie's restaurant?

Exactly! my butcher's daughter has started working as a trainee in her father's meat shop. He's showing her how to cut, and carve meat, the various meat parts etc I don't see any protesters outside the shop. It's when it's the high paying jobs that people cry, nepotism!

it's always been that parents train their dc in what they do for a living. If you're a politician, casual convo round the breakfast table, doctors talk about their work and cases they've seen, musicians sing in the million pound studios at home and the kids have a crack at it too, children of actors follow parents idly on stage and watch them act etc and dc listen and pick these things up and become very knowledgeable at a young age. It's not unsurprising they end up following the same path.

bellac11 · 07/11/2022 20:05

The cafe on the corner employs his son, he will probably go on take over his dads business

There are LOADS of these out there, with much, much more talent.

susan12345678 · 07/11/2022 20:07

It’s exactly the same. I still work in telly. I employ people. Anyone can get a job if they a) have a talent in the field, be it as a researcher, in lighting, directing, whatever and b) knock - and keep knocking - on doors

I’m not so sure. I used to work at a famous advertising agency in London. Thousands- literally thousands - of graduates would apply for the most entry level runner roles. You could flick through the pile of applications & almost all of them sounded talented and keen, but the overwhelming majority would be rejected. I sometimes wonder where they all ended up, what sort of jobs they ended up doing

mrsnjw · 07/11/2022 20:08

I really like Roman Kemp. He comes across really well and his work around mental health has helped raised awareness. He seems very 'unspoilt'. Martin and Shirley have done a good job and seem really likeable too.

Neapolitanicecream · 07/11/2022 20:10

@susan12345678 My point exactly our kids don’t get off the starting block

Christ , my parents blocked every exempt to get into a related profession to theirs . They thought it wouldn't look 'right but I take your point @Neapolitanicecream
I dislike famous people being given remarkable experiences, I'd like to see Jo public have the opportunity

GreekDogRescue · 07/11/2022 20:11

This is what Julie Burchill says all the time. There is no way a working class kid with no connections could make it in the media today.

Neapolitanicecream · 07/11/2022 20:10

Except they do. I employ people like your son, like me, like my mates. Dunno what else you want to hear.

Your kids need to be pro-active and determined. With some talent in the area in which they want to work.

Tinner01 · 07/11/2022 20:12

Roman Kemp is a successful dj/radio host!! Maybe having connections in a particularly industry helped get his first job but that’s how the world works for many. Not just radio presenters. He’s also v v popular so has been kept on because people like him, not because his dad is famous. Is your son a radio presenter/dj? If not then why do you care?

Libre55 · 07/11/2022 20:12

There are plenty of jobs advertised in the Stage, Facebook production sites. I work in media TV and although relatives can open doors, a lot of of people have come in at the lowest level and worked their way up, with no famous friends. He just has to get a show reel together of the work he’s doing. I know people who started as runners, being barked at to go and get coffee for everyone, or do the most menial tasks. One of my friends started of as a researcher/runner on GBBO . She now has a radio show on a local station, and does some announcing on TV. I have no doubt she will achieve her dream of being a TV presenter. Your son may need to start at the bottom, but as long as he has a positive attitude and is not a victim like his mother he has every chance of getting there.

PoundShopPrincess · 07/11/2022 20:13

Why should your son get a chance over anyone else? If the sum total of his effort is getting his parent to moan on MN then he's definitely at the back of the queue. Grin

There are lots of ways to get into the media. Yy it's competitive but it's not impossible to get a job with no contacts as long as you are talented, determined and hard working. I have quite a few friends who work on TV or radio or have columns in magazines - none of them had famous parents.
