I just wish there was a fair crack for all our sons and daughters to get theses opportunities 🤢

I think it feels more annoying because it's so visible and well paid but would you start a thread if your DC's friend got a job in their Dad's hair salon or their Auntie's restaurant?

Bakeacaketoday · 07/11/2022 19:43

It is though a thing that people who are good at acting/singing/dancing/modelling also have kids who are good at the same things!

I'm good at computer programming, my son is good at computer programming, I need to accept that the One show isn't really going to be a thing for him..

Through Wikipedia showing the family ties I've recently discovered that pretty much half of Hollywood have famous parents. The cycle never ends. So many "model" children... the Baldwins, the Kardashians, Cindy Crawford's daughter, Kate Moss' niece and daughter (both of whom have no redeeming modelling features. Kate Moss' daughter looks like the Dad definitely doesn't have her Mum's model looks.

You really can’t see the resemblance between Kate moss and Lila??

25 years ago things were VERY different in the media world. Not so easy now.

It’s exactly the same. I still work in telly. I employ people.

Anyone can get a job if they a) have a talent in the field, be it as a researcher, in lighting, directing, whatever and b) knock - and keep knocking - on doors.

QueSyrahSyrah · 07/11/2022 19:43

@Sillybanana Meanwhile I know 4 people at the BBC, two who present (local). None of them had family already in the BBC Confused

Pikafuckingwho · 07/11/2022 19:45

Nepotism exists in every industry. Look at the City, banking etc.

I used to work for a big bank the bloody useless people on huge salaries that were hired because daddy had a friend always existed.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 07/11/2022 19:45

NC12345665 · 07/11/2022 19:42

So nepotism doesn't exist in showbiz then?

Yes it exists. As it does in every industry. But - like every industry - not every vacancy is filled via nepotism. The opportunities to make it on your own exist. I did and so did a vast number of the people I’ve worked with over the years.

Mummieslncorporated · 07/11/2022 19:46

So nepotism doesn't exist in showbiz then?

Has anyone said that? Or implied it?

Nepotism exists in every industry, including the place I work at. I still got a job there despite being new to the area and knowing nobody. The fact that nepotism exists doesn't mean that there are no opportunities for anyone else.

Needmorelego · 07/11/2022 19:46

@Neapolitanicecream how old is your son? Is he or has he studied media? Has he done acting classes? Is he totally up to date with what's trending and pop culture and current events?
Roman Kemp started out as a DJ. Does your son have a good, chatty voice who can basically talk about anything and everything. Has he done any type of DJ work (or volunteer work) at places like local hospital radio, school radio.
Has he done any vlogs, Instagram, You Tube, Twitch (? I think it's called).
Has he done 'presenting' at things like a school talent show?
If he is/has done all that and has auditioned for specific roles then it's hard to say why he hasn't got the job.
If he is still young - then this is what he needs to be doing.

LaGioconda · 07/11/2022 19:47

Neapolitanicecream · 07/11/2022 19:17

So how did he get the radio dj job ? So much for the bbc having open and fair recruitment????

Why do you assume it must have been the BBC? It wasn't, it was a commercial company which I'm sure wouldn't have kept him if he was no good.

Emanresu9 · 07/11/2022 19:48

But who would the audience see? The famous person or your son? Obviously the famous person. YABU

HadEnough798 · 07/11/2022 19:49

It's always been like that. Sophie Ellis-Bexter is the daughter of a Blue Peter presenter and a film producer Dad. Lily Allen is famous actor Keith Allen's child. Yes it's unfair but so is life. Same with money buying you access to more opportunities or tutoring tbh.

JudgeJ · 07/11/2022 19:50

As my dear Mum would have said It's not what you now it's who you know.

It applies in all walks of life, not just the media etc.

Blueeyedgirl21 · 07/11/2022 19:52

Roman kemp is actually a nice lad who does good work IMO. Brooklyn beckham is a really gross example of nepotism for me. What does he even do? Also see basically any big blockbuster film at the moment has the child of a Hollywood actor in, the next generation has come of age and there’s a lot of helping hands from mum and dad!

Dogsogdog · 07/11/2022 19:52

FurAndFeathers · 07/11/2022 19:43

You really can’t see the resemblance between Kate moss and Lila??

Lila is the image of her dad

Jellykat · 07/11/2022 19:53

It's always been thus.. more who you know, rather then what you know.

Well nobody said everyone in showbiz was a relative of another famous person but that didn't stop people charging in to say they made it on their own merits in showbiz.

Blueeyedgirl21 · 07/11/2022 19:54

I feel like Lila moss is a lovely looking girl but I see girls who are similarly attractive going into our local sixth form college every day. Whether they want to be models or not I don’t know but I feel like if Lila was brought up in Doncaster or some place similar and her mum and dad were a nurse and a window cleaner she probably wouldn’t be successful

NearlChristmas · 07/11/2022 19:55

Nepotism - The Beckhams kids, Gordon Ramsey's offspring etc etc etc They get the breaks due to mummy and daddy not talent

Sillystripytail · 07/11/2022 19:55

Nepotism is in every industry, media is just the one you'll know about the most because they're in the public eye. Why have you fixated on Roman Kemp? He may have been helped by his connections but he wouldn't keep the jobs he's had/got if he was crap.

I wouldn't read up about Lance Stroll in F1 though if it bugs you this much, he's a shockingly shit racing driver but Daddy owns the team so hey ho!

NCFT0922 · 07/11/2022 19:55

@Georgeskitchen who she met after she found fame and established her own career.

Tonty · 07/11/2022 19:56

Georgeskitchen · 07/11/2022 19:26

Christine Lampard has a famous hubby though😉

I'm guessing Christine Lampard wasn't married to her famous hubby when she started.

OMG12 · 07/11/2022 19:56

I actually feel sorry for many kids of famous people. Your Dads a singer, you have inherited the talent. Yet all you get is, you’re not as good as your dad, you only got a record deal because of your dad, every interview, what’s it like having x as your dad, what was it like growing up with x as your dad etc etc. it works both ways

MumofSpud · 07/11/2022 19:56

I always think that having (for example) famous parents will open doors but it is up to the child's own talents to keep it open.

Also it doesn't matter how brilliant that child would become in their chosen field people will always take the Mickey / say it was just because of their parents!

TabithaTittlemouse · 07/11/2022 19:56

What is your son doing to get into the industry?

DH works in tv and film and worked bloody hard to get where he is.
