I just wish there was a fair crack for all our sons and daughters to get theses opportunities 🤢

This happens in every industry though. In my first role every office had a family member working in another office.

How many Drs have children who are in the medical profession or marry someone in a similar role.

In the current school I work at so many of the teachers are children of teachers and the old CEO had loads of their family working across our schools. It's not that they necessarily get a shoe in but seeing what family probably does give you a better insights and also you will hear of jobs going if family work there.

This is noting new.

the80sweregreat · 08/11/2022 19:29

Where my husband worked for over forty years they had generations of people all related in some way working there!
His own dad got him in as an apprentice.
It might not be like this now, but it was always the way back then

@CatkinToadflax 😄. I’m not in drama unfortunately but if that changes!

😄😄😄

Yup nepotism opens many doors. It's not fair but what the hell can we do about it? I know of one young guy who is breaking into films, he is talentless, but his parents got him the breaks because of who they are. It's shit when you think of the wealth of talent out there who won't get a look in because mum and dad are 'ordinary'.

It is sad 😞

Someone I know who is a TV presenter started in the post room at a TV company. He was funny and determined. There are also open auditions for things. And lots of apprentice type schemes. Roman Kemp has proved himself in my opinion. He is very natural and charming.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 08/11/2022 09:31

Martin the Singer

But he isn't a singer, he's a bassist and was probably only in Spandau Ballet because of his older brother Gary. Shirley was basically a backing singer for Wham!

I'm dreading Chris Evans' kids (especially Noah) getting older. He was already bloody annoying when CE did the R2 breakfast show.

He was also an actor and he came from a humble background

People like Emma and Sophie Thompson whose parents were in the industry or Zoe Ball is another one

woodhill · 08/11/2022 20:00

I like Roman and the Kemps tbh

TalkisChips · 08/11/2022 20:09

Emma Thompson’s daughter is also an actress.

PatrioticPenny743 · 08/11/2022 20:11

It's not what you know, it's who you know. This has always been the case in every business, no one says its fair, its life!!!

Damnautocorrect · 08/11/2022 20:35

It’s the same as generations of tradesman, you pick things up just being in that family and surrounded by it.

the80sweregreat · 08/11/2022 20:40

I like Roman too. He seems a nice affable person.
His documentary I mentioned earlier on was sad. He really did consider taking his own life at one point.

WindyHedges · 08/11/2022 20:44

Is your son any good @Neapolitanicecream ? What’s his training?

Toomuchtrouble4me · 08/11/2022 20:56

That’s the way of the world

He's a hugely successful Radio 1 DJ and has been for many years.

I read a couple of years ago when he was scouted to Capital he had no experience at all and was taught on the job.
He was really nervous but of course got the job as he wanted a job in media and had his looks and young age and charm.

the80sweregreat · 08/11/2022 21:07

His not too bad on the one show.
He doesn't take himself too seriously.

riceuten · 08/11/2022 21:18

The Germans call it "Vitamin B".

I hate it, but that's how the entertainment world (and much of the private sector) works.

Darlingx · 08/11/2022 21:58

“ Nepotism it’s a long word it might confuse you but it has something to do with coming from the same cock “ rather succinctly put by the late great Oliver Reed about his uncle getting him a gig acting.
My partner is an award winning film maker can’t crack into jobs as a director its a closed shop esp the BBC even the technical engineer jobs even with having worked for agencies with good BBC references
Have to laugh when he was asked to fill out whether he had school dinners ? As part of their tick box exercise. We laugh or now its how do u identify we have some in the office as ‘they’ My partner said he was a heterosexual male it just went completely over his head bless him. They are trying to be more diverse as a directive that is a cert but its like runway models being still tall and thin. You have to tick boxes don’t you.

Tatws · 08/11/2022 22:03

Goes on every where, a role was advertised within my organisation for a researcher post, half a dozen experienced candidates failed to get the post as managers daughter fresh out of school got it, she was then going round the office asking people who were turned down how to do simple tasks.

@NowThatsWhatICall22 possibly a correction on a correction - Miquita Oliver’s mum was in a band called Rip Rig + Panic with her best mate, Neneh Cherry. She’s always been pretty connected, just not in the public eye. People didn’t touch Miquita for a while as they didn’t want to be associated with someone with bad press (she didn’t pay a large tax bill).

Andi was even on an episode of the Young Ones with her band, in the early 80s.

I loved NC back in the day, but didn’t know that connection to Andi or Miquita Oliver. Happy to be corrected on my correction 😆 @PauliesWalnuts

Darlingx · 08/11/2022 22:16

My partner went to some Networking and job workshops to get an agent .
The woman giving the talk was talking about ways to navigate that they can pass details on . My partner contacted her agency and to quote her she said “I don’t have the bandwidth for anyone new right now “love that so then he replied can you pass my details on to someone who has. Of course they won’t exist as they all want to be aligned with names. Now if only she had said this you know on stage in front of the paying audience you know I just don’t have the bandwidth for it right now whilst encouraging to contact and network 😂

Darlingx · 08/11/2022 22:26

Louis Theroux his father was a presenter Documentary film maker its literally a more nerdy clone of his father. I never could understand his career previously until I was enlightened to this.

Darlingx · 08/11/2022 22:30

Again my partner went to a career progression talk by Louis Theroux but of course having his father being in the broadcast industry was omitted from that discussion. They are literally cashing in on some Fairy tale of how they got there when unless you can access your own brand of Nepotism its BS .

Roman Kemp has been working in radio as a presenter for probably ten years now. He's well known in his own right, and was on I'm a celebrity because of it.

You don't land a prime time TV presenting job of you haven't proven yourself capable beforehand.

If your son is interested in a career in media, there are plenty of ways in. Persistence is key.

Very true, I worked in tv for many years, I never knew anyone bt I was very persistent. Have the attitude that they have to give the job to someone so why shdnt it be me?
